Barbate BFT population with the greatest MB (all fish sampled > 100 kg). These data reflect a
situation in which the eastern Mediterranean basin may function as a habitat for young BFT,
until they gain a larger MB and are able to move to the Atlantic Ocean. However, the existence
of genetically discrete BFT populations in the Mediterranean Sea cannot be ruled out.
Reproductive biology of little tunny, Euthynnus alletteratus (Rafinesque), from the northeastern
Mediterranean Sea.
Kahraman, A.E., Alıçlı, T.Z., Akaylı, T., Oray, I.K. 2008.
J. Appl. Ichthyol. 24(5): 551-554.
Abstract:The study aimed at identifying spawning season and potential year classes reaching
maturity in the north-eastern Mediterranean, an area where little information on tuna spawning
is available. Gonads (60 ovaries and 36 testis) were obtained from little tunny, Euthynnus
alletteratus. The fish were caught between November 2002 and May 2005 in the north-eastern
Mediterranean Sea. The ovaries were histologically examined to determine the reproductive
conditions and developmental stages of oocytes. Seven females sampled in May, July, and
August were sexually mature (stage III or IV). The gonado-somatic index (GSI) indicated that
spawning generally occurred between May and September. The most intensive spawning
period was observed between July and August. The sex ratio was calculated as 1:1.7 M ⁄ F
(total n = 96). The length and weight relationship was calculated with W = 0.038 L 2.77 , ages
from year I to IV being included in the analysis.
Growth and reproduction studies on gilthead seabream (Sparus aurata) in Beymelek Lagoon,
Turkey
İranian Journal of Fisheries Sciences, 8: 103-114.
Abstract: Age, growth, length-weight relationship and reproduction were investigated for
gilthead seabream (Sparus aurata L., 1758) collected from Beymelek Lagoon (Antalya,
Turkey) between February 2006 and July 2007. The ages, total lengths and weights of samples
ranged from 0+ to 4 years, from 10.6 to 35.5 cm, and from 18 to 928 g. Growth was described
by the standard form of the von Bertalanffy growth equation and the estimated parameters were
L ∞ = 44.6 cm, k = 0.394 yr -1 and t 0 = -1.331 yr. Length-weight relationship was determined as
W=0.0174 TL 2.9769 (R 2 =0.965), and weight increased with size isometrically (b = 2.9769) for
all fishes. Sex inversion occurred mainly 26 cm in total length and females reached sexual
maturity at 28.5 cm. The spawning period occurred from December to February, while the
gamete emission peaked in December.
Key Words: Beymelek Lagoon, gilthead seabream, Sparus aurata, growth, length-weight
