22 Ottawa Ski Club Year Book 1944-45 running swiftly, faultlessly (of course) and (I'll wager) conceitedly on to the apparently flat ground there, you are suddenly rudely shaken. The earth is rippled into a succession of waves, and unless your knees and ankles act efficiently as springs, you bite the snow. It will be apparent to the reader from what I have written that I am not a wildly enthusiastic trail skier. Give me the open slopes! There Freedom and Speed wait to 1 attend . your efforts. It is good to stand one moment on a high hil1top, breathing the fresh air of the summit, and then to abandon yourself to your skis, swoop down and arrive a few minutes later at the bottom. The thrill of that smooth, swift, silent glide downhill cannot be surpassed in any · of Man's sporting experiences. It has a rare, a sublime quality. It compares with the scoop of a falcon or the flight of an angel. And if the height is so great, or the going so tricky, that on arrival at the bottom your knees are quivering a little with the strain, that makes it all the grander. To watch a good skier is to see grace of human movement at its best. It is a beautiful verse from the poetry of motion. And to try to emulate a good skier is the most glo,rious exercise in the world. I sometimes used to wonder, when I was a child, what Heaven looked like. Now I know. One at least of its many mansions must be a white-walled, redroofed timber shack, like the club-house at Camp Fortune, surrounded by glistening white slopes fashioned in the images of Mort's Hill, the Divide, the Slalom Hill and Travelers'. The · snow on them is always spring snow--crisp and fast like crystallized sugar. There the Elect ski all day long. It is a matter of deep regret to me that my life on this Earth has been so sinful that I am never likely to arrive at that Camp Paradise. I would love to disport myself through all Eternity on the celestial Travelers' Hill, in the company of the saints. The ecstasy of it would be all the greater, because one would not necessarily have to herring-bone up the hill after each descent. When your legs grew a trifle weary, you could S'p,read your wings and fly back to the summit. It would be pleasant, too, to rest at noon and eat your lunch out of doors, as one does in March and April at Camp Fortune. Sprawled on a bench outside the club-house of Camp Paradise, with a bottle of cocacola stuck coolly in the snow beside me and a hot-dog clutched in my hand, I would acquire a nice tan in the heavenly sunshine. And around me I would recognize the faces of my fellowmembers of the Ottawa Ski Club. For, of course, they will all be there. Oh Lord, I wish I had lived a virtuou·s life, and could claim that perfect reward!
