around the lodge, etc., etc. Each
had his own job to do and seemed
bent on getting it done as
soon as possilble. It was a hive
of industry; but having finished
my painting job on Friday, I
could watch the boys with impunity
and a clear conscience,
Sunday was Bill's 1birthday,
and Mrs. Hancock set a dainty
birthday cake in front of him
at the head of the table. She
had got up half an hour earlier
than usual to make it! There
was a lot of banter during the
meal, and I heard later that the
boys threw their chief into the
lake fully clothed (which means
that he was wearing his shorts)
in order to commemorate the
occasion.
My wife had come u.p again
on Saturday to spend the long
week-end with me and see that
I got back to the office on Tuesday,
instead of . painting the
lodge floor, or building a new
chimney. The weather was
simply idyllic, and we had a
grand time.
But Sunday evening was the
highlight of the whole trip.
About dusk, we strolled over to
the lodge and found the Night
Riders busy piling pieces of
waste lumber to be used for
kindling, as well as burying a
mountain of tin cans that had
accumulated through the years.
S'Oon they spread out their
blankets and sleeping bags beneath
the pines. My wife and
I lay beside the boys under a
myriad of stars listening to the
radio. As the full moon rose,
piercing shafts of light streamed
down through the trees on
the hill ; and suddenly as it cleared
the tree-tops, .the whole scene
was ba.thed in (!lear, radiant
moonlight! The mystic spell
was broken by the 10 o'clock
news, and reluctantly we left
that world of enchantment and
made our way to the little ca'bin
among the sumacs ...
