bruce NUCLEAR RESTARTS, ONTARIO The award-winning ASLF joint venture, now made up of Hatch–Sargent & Lundy–Fox, that restarted Units 3 and 4 at the Bruce nuclear generating station on Lake Huron, Canada, has been assigned similar responsibilities in support of the restart of Units 1 and 2. Among the tasks facing the joint venture are upgrades to the fire protection systems, including the fire-suppression system for the turbine generators, and smoke-detection systems in electrical equipment rooms. ASLF is also installing a secondary control area that provides independent control systems for the safe shutdown and monitoring of the reactor should the main control room become uninhabitable. < The unprecedented restart of two nuclear generating units at Bruce A added 1,500 MW to the Ontario power grid POINT LEPREAU REFURBISHMENT, NEW BRUNSWICK The 635-MW Point Lepreau nuclear generating station, the first commercial CANDU-6 unit, was commissioned in 1983. Hatch–Sargent & Lundy performed a comprehensive engineering assessment of the overall execution of the refurbishment project and apprised the New Brunswick Power Board of Directors of key issues on a quarterly basis. Refurbishment will extend the life of NB Power’s Point Lepreau nuclear plant by 25 years DEEP GEOLOGIC REPOSITORY, ONTARIO The Deep Geologic Repository project is a long-term disposal facility for the low- and intermediate-level waste produced at the Bruce, Darlington and Pickering nuclear power generating stations. Approximately 200,000 m 3 of waste from daily operations of the nuclear stations and from refurbishment of reactors will be stored 680 m underground in a stable limestone formation. Hatch is performing preliminary engineering studies for the Nuclear Waste Management Organization (NWMO). NWMO is undertaking this work on behalf of Ontario Power Generation, which submitted an application to the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission for approval to construct the DGR. < The deep geologic repository will store low- and intermediate-level waste 15
