bc 230-kV Power System, canada The West Kootenay Power system had experienced extensive outages and needed upgrading for compatibility with modern adjacent systems. We removed most of the 70-year-old system and installed 50 km of 230-kV transmission line across environmentally sensitive terrain — including two 230-kV substations, improved 63-kV line connections and fiber optics. Using steep topography to our advantage, we established unusually long spans (up to 1.6 km) to avoid disturbing valley bottoms or riparian areas. A team of biologists, foresters, engineers, and land-use specialists carefully planned and conducted restoration and revegetation along the way. This complex project balanced 230-kV transmission needs with critical environmental stewardship Lakehead Static Var Compensator, CANADA Hatch is preparing detailed designs for switching and control equipment and layout for the Lakehead Static Var Compensator (SVC) project in Thunder Bay, Ontario on behalf of Siemens Canada. The Lakehead Static Var Compensator site is located within an existing Hydro One substation. The project assignment is to profile detailed designs for < A static var compensator (SVC) installation switching, control equipment and layout of the Siemens SVC components. The project will provide reactive power balance for the system so it can meet increasing demands for power and improve reliability. Lakehead SVC is one of many such facilities planned for utilities around the world to help meet expected energy demand. substation rebuild, usa This project — for a utility in Maine — was required to meet the greater load in the area. The rebuild involved the termination of an existing 34-kV transmission line into a new open-air, threebay bus terminal designed for 69 kV. The new structure supplies capacitor bank, distribution circuits and a 7-MVA transformer feeding into the 12-kV system. Our work included civil and structural design for the site expansion; sub-grade ground grid; new conduit and duct system; the bus-bay structure and control house; electrical, control, protection and transmission design; protection coordination and relay settings; and construction specifications, commissioning services and as-built drawings. < Expanded substation with increased transmission capacity from 34 kV to 69 kV 17
