karun III HYDROELECTRIC PROJECT, Iran This project on the Karun River is one of the largest hydro projects ever constructed. Our work began with geological, hydrological and other studies in the 1970s and we’ve been involved since with engineering, construction and commissioning services. The main structure is a thin-arch, double-curvature, 205-m-high concrete arch dam designed to transmit reservoir pressure to the bedrock foundation and withstand severe earthquakes. Eight generating units and associated equipment are located in caverns downstream of the dam in the right abutment. The initial development, with a designed capacity of 2,000 MW, is a key addition to the region’s long-term power requirements. < After 11 years of construction, the 2,000-MW Karun III project began generating electricity in 2006 shikwamkwa replacement dam, canada The original Shikwamkwa Dam was built in 1958 on a highly pervious overburden foundation. Using advanced modeling and proprietary reservoir mapping technology, we determined that its seepage problems were beyond remediation and began the fast-track design and construction of a new dam to deal with the site’s complex geological issues. More than 1.1 million cubic meters of fill were used for the new 35-m-high, 874-m-long dam. A 65-m plastic concrete cut-off wall (one of the world’s deepest) was used to seal the foundation. We were responsible for engineering design and construction quality monitoring, including provision of a sophisticated site laboratory. The new dam has reduced seepage flows, thereby enhancing both safety and power generation potential. We are part of the Owner’s Representative team for construction of a new tunnel to be completed in December 2013. At 10.4 km long and 14.4 m diameter, it will be the largest-diameter hard-rock tunnel in the world — and will be excavated as deep as 140 m below the city of Niagara Falls. It will enable a 28% increase in the volume of water entering the station’s turbines, generating an additional 1.6 TWh of electricity per year — enough to serve 160,000 homes for the next 90 years. < The 10-km diversion tunnel will be bored through rock under the city of Niagara Falls 5
