Thank You
A big thank you to all
parents and senior students
who helped at Year 9 camp.
Much appreciated.
Tena Koutou matua ma
Dear parents and caregivers
A huge thank you to BNZ Thames for the wonderful work they did in
plantings around the Dog Box as part of their Closed For Good day. Several
BNZ staff spent the entire day digging, planting and mulching to contribute
to the Dog Box project. Year 13 Furniture students are currently
constructing old style desks and Year 13 Building and Construction students
are shortly to complete inside lining.
Students are now well underway with their learning in various subjects and
particularly at senior level, teachers have agreed to give students at least
one assessment opportunity prior to the end of term. We have found in the
past, that in doing so, this encourages students to keep their eye on the
scoreboard ie monitor how they are going with credits. Parents can be
hugely helpful in sitting down with your child and finding out what
assessments are due and when. All students are given this information at
the beginning of the year and are encouraged to record this information in
their Homework diaries.
Feedback we received from students last year in terms of completing
assessments and homework was that they find it very difficult to manage
personal communication technologies and are often distracted from their
studies at home by texting, Facebook, Youtube and the like. In fact a
number of students admitted it would have been helpful if their parents had
been stricter in laying down not-negotiables around cellphone, tv and
computer use! An hour or so each night when the cell phone sits on the
fridge and the tv and computer is off (unless being used for assignment
work) would be a good start.
As well as what to learn, we also have a focus on teaching students how to
learn. Students who are developing lifelong and lifewise learning capability
are Resourceful, Resilient, Reflective and Reciprocal learners. In the next
week or two, all students will be doing a ‘4 R Learning Inventory’ in which
they assess their own learning to learn capability. As part of the river group
programme, all students will be working on one of the ‘4 Rs’ over the next
term or so and teachers will be receiving professional development in what
they can do to encourage the development of each of the ‘4 Rs’ in students.
From the Academic Dean
Lynette Benns
Students’ Courses of Study/Subjects
As in 2010, students have until 31 March this year
to finalise their course of study/subjects. After this
date, there will be no more course changes, (except
in exceptional circumstances). Students will remain
in the subjects which they are currently studying
until the end of the year.
Junior Diploma of Learning
To achieve the Junior Diploma of Learning students
must gain 67% of all of the available credits over
Years 9 and 10. In addition to this academic
requirement there is also an attendance
requirement. Students are also required to have a
90% attendance rate. If students do not meet both
of these requirements and fail their JDL, they may
be required to repeat some or all of their Year 10
course of study/subjects (as a Year 11 student). You
will be notified at the beginning of each term when
the JDL data becomes available, if your child is
considered to be at risk of failing his/her JDL. Please
don’t hesitate to contact Lynette Benns or the Year
9/10 Dean if you have any concerns or queries
about the Junior Diploma of Learning.
After School Homework Facility
As a trial from Week 8 (21 March) to the end of
Week 11 (15 April) we will provide a place for
students to use as a study/homework room while
waiting for sports/cultural practices/trainings later
in the afternoon.
On Monday the Hub will be available and Tuesday,
Wednesday and Thursday students will be able to
work in Room 8 from 3:30 – 4:30pm. Students will
be expected to work independently. We will not
take responsibility for ensuring they arrive as you
expect.
Year 10 Literacy and Numeracy Credits
Mrs Bentley
This year, in preparation for Year 11 in 2012, all Year
10 students will have the opportunity to gain their
Literacy and Numeracy requirements for NCEA
Level 1. This process will be monitored during
River Group time and involves students
developing their self-management skills by
gathering specific evidence from their various
subjects. Students will keep their work in a
portfolio which will be assessed when
completed. Students who achieve these
standards are considered “ready to begin their
NCEA Level 1” in Year 11 and will have already
earned 20 credits.
Early next term there will be an opportunity to
attend an information evening where this will be
discussed in detail. In the meantime, if you have
any queries please contact Catherine Bentley.
National Certificates
Alongside NCEA, the school also offers
national certificates that contribute to NCEA
and are recognised by employers. These
certificates can be obtained in a full year
subject class and include:
- Level 1 National Certificate in
Primary Industry Studies
- Level 1 National Certificate in Maths
- Level 1 + 2 Employment skills
- Level 1 + 2 Building and Construction
Agriculture
Ninety students are doing Agriculture this year
at Hauraki Plains College. We are purchasing
an ATV but are also after a small trailer. If
anyone is prepared to sell one cheaply or even
donate one to the Agriculture department, it
would be appreciated. Students will learn
backing skills and loading principles.
Careers Notices
The year is well underway in the Career Centre. Larger
numbers of students are taking advantage of the
opportunities available through the Gateway
programme.
The College has a target of 70 individual student work
placements for 2011. Students are placed with
employers in vocations that they have a natural interest
in and which relate directly to their school subjects or
their chosen career direction.
Work placements are usually for 1 day per week for 8 –
9 weeks. Transport is available for students who do not
have their own transport.
Gateway enables students to explore and evaluate
possible career opportunities. It also allows students to
develop their employability skills and build up valuable
CV documentation, such as an employer evaluation,
record of work and an employer reference.
All students involved in the Gateway programme are
required to complete a Workplace Safety Course before
going out into the workplace. The course provides
workplace safety knowledge and skills and also
contributes 11 credits towards NCEA.
Year 11, 12 and 13 students are eligible to participate in
Gateway. The key requirements are that students are
genuinely interested in the particular occupation and
keen to participate and learn.
Any students interested in doing Gateway this year,
who have not already applied, need to see Mr Keith in
the Careers Centre and have their name put down for
the next (last) Workplace Safety Course to be held on
the 4/5 th of April.
Sports News from the New HPC Sports Coordinator
Cindy Berridge
E-mail sport@haurakiplains.school.nz
You may (or may not) have heard that I have recently
taken over the role as Sports Coordinator. I have worked
at Ngatea Primary for the last 6 years and been involved in
many clubs and committees so sport and administration is
not new to me, however, just bear with me as I am
settling in to my new role here at HPC. I look forward to
working with students, staff and parents alike. The email
is still the same so please keep sending in any sports news
or results.
Another hectic three weeks has just flown by with several
events having taken place including the HPC and Thames
Valley Athletics champs, the North Island Secondary
Schools Rowing Champs and the Thames Valley Swimming
Sports. It is impressive to see so many students
competing in such a wide range of different sports and
proudly wearing the HPC colours.
Sports and Cultural Participation Code of Conduct
This form outlines what is expected from all individuals
who represent Hauraki Plains College in sports or cultural
events. The main message is that sports and cultural
teams have the responsibility of role modelling the highest
standards of conduct in terms of behaviour, showing
respect and taking responsibility at all times. Of specific
importance is:

Conduct and dress before and after games
Conduct and sportsmanship during games
Community and school involvement
Should a student’s behaviour or attendance be
unsatisfactory at school, the college may consider
standing them down from sports or other activities as an
option. Students may be stood down from participating in
College Sports or Cultural Teams, competition games and
sports exchanges for one week to one month from the
time of the offence. This would be done only after
consultation and discussion with College staff and coaches
and/or managers.
If any students have not signed one of these forms in the
past 12 months - even if students are not intending to
participate in anything at this stage – they need to see
their river guide to have this done.
fantastic result.
EQUESTRIAN
Anne Leuthart
Well done to the HPC Equestrian team. Lots of
great results from the Waikato Secondary Schools
Show Jumping. At the time of this newsletter, we
have no official results but the team finished in
the top 10.
Well done also to Erin Cooksley, who won her
Dressage at the Waikato One Day Event and then
had a clear round in the Cross country and Show
Jumping to finish with a 1st in the Novice Class.
Also congratulations to Natasha Watters who
competed in the North Island Standard bred
Championship 2011 held in Tauranga and gained
many placings in a number of the events to
eventually gain 2nd place overall. A great effort
from a student competing in an open event.
This week we have six students competing in the
New Zealand horse of The Year show at Hastings
so good luck everyone and we look forward to all
the news next week.
to boast about – well done team and supporters!
Dear Amanda,
I would like to take this opportunity to thank you
and the Hauraki Plains College Moto-cross team
for your marshalling on the 27th February, at the
Patetonga round of the Moto-cross
you and the team conducted yourselves during the
meeting and I look forward to working with you in
the future.
It’s always nice to get great feedback, especially
when the days are long and hot and there are lots
of fast riders. We truly have to have our wits
about us.
NETBALL
The HPC Netball Club AGM was held on 2 March.
Tracey Fisher (Chairperson), Suzanne Herkt
(Secretary) and Bronwyn Smit (Treasurer) agreed
to continue in these positions ONLY until the
next meeting. Are there any parents/caregivers
who would be willing to take on these roles?
Please contact Ngaire Harris or Lynette Benns if
you are interested.
Many thanks to those who have helped out so
far this season by running trials or volunteering
to assist with coaching or managing a team. We
need lots more coaches, managers and umpires
to help with our teams. Once again, please
contact Ngaire or Lynette if you are willing to
give up your time to assist. We will be in touch
with those who have volunteered soon.
2011 NZ Age Group Division 1 Swimming
Championships
Continuing on from her swimming success at
both local and regional level, Helena Gasson
produced more outstanding results at the recent
NZ age group championships. Racing in the
Under 16 girls, she gained a silver in the 800m
Freestyle and a bronze in both the 400 Medley
and 400 Freestyle.
Awesome effort, Helena, and congratulations on
your medals.
At the time of writing this article, the
Waikato/Bay of Plenty Individual Triathlon event
hadn’t taken place so results will be published in
the next newsletter.
ROWING
NORTH ISLAND SCHOOL CHAMP REGATTA,
11TH -13TH MARCH
Tireless training and early mornings paid off for a good
number of our crews at the North Island School Champs
regatta. Our crews managed to reward themselves with
7 A finals and 7 B finals. This in itself was a great
achievement. The Girls Under 16 Quad secured 3rd
place in their A Final and were rewarded with a Bronze
medal. They demonstrated a nuggety race and dug in
their toes with determination when needed. This crew
consisted of Georgina Speedy, Emily Speedy, Sonja Rose,
Kayla Davenport and coxed by Dominique Williams.
The second crew to be rewarded for their hard work
were the Girls Under 16 Four, who, despite equipment
failure, won Bronze for Hauraki. This crew was made up
of Alannah Pfaff, Sonja Rose, Emily Speedy, Georgina
Speedy and coxed by Dominique Williams.
Of worthy note and a testament to her commitment to
the sport and to her crew is Magan Schipper. Magan
was weighed in for her Lightweight race and discovered
that she was 100 grams over the necessary weight
required in order for her crew to race. She decided that
there was not much more that she could do to bring her
weight down. The only thing she had left was her hair!!!
Her crew literally cut off her hair to weigh exactly 100
grams. This enabled her and her crew to continue
racing!! Unbelievable! Thank you Magan and well done
on qualifying for an A final.
Congratulations also to the coaches Luke and Matty for
their support and commitment and a successful rowing
campaign.
Good luck for the Nationals in a couple of weeks at Lake
Karapiro.
Mark Davies
Volleyball
Lunchtime volleyball is operating every Tuesday and
Thursday in the school gym for the remainder of this
term. Any students wanting to take part just turn up –
you must be wearing PE gear though.
