Last day for Juniors
Many thanks to those parents of Year 9 and 10 students who made contact
regarding parent interviews following issuing of reports earlier in the term. Because
of the low rate of response, we decided to combine Junior and Senior Report
interviews later in the term (Thursday 6 October). In the meantime, if as a parent,
you have a concern regarding your child’s learning, please feel free to contact the
Dean who will follow up. Junior Diploma updates were posted earlier this week.
Next week is Senior Assessment week. For Achievement Standard students, these
exams are an important practice opportunity and also provide valuable feedback
and feed forward to students in terms of progress to date and what they need to do
to be fully prepared for finals in November. Should a student be ill on the morning
of an external exam, grades are used from the internal practice exams next week, so
the importance of these cannot be underestimated. There is no study leave for
students during these exams as Unit Standards and Junior classes will continue to
run. On Friday of Senior Assessment week, however, a ‘Catch up’ day is being held
for those students, both Junior and Senior, who need to complete assessments.
Other students are not required to attend this day. Buses will run as normal. In
addition to making the most of this catch up opportunity, all students are urged to
make the most of the tutorials which are offered as per the schedule in this
newsletter.
As we head towards the second half of Term Three, an increasing number of
students studying Unit Standard courses have already achieved their NCEA
qualification and while they are to be acknowledged for this, keeping motivated and
focused can be an issue. It is important that these students realise that much of the
learning which occurs now, is preparation for courses at a higher level next year. If
a student who is over 16 years of age does want to sign out earlier because they
have completed their qualification, then he or she must approach the Dean in the
first instance.
Our trophy cabinet is full following a large number of teams who have taken out
sporting honours in various competitions. To have six first teams – Boys and Girls
Hockey, Boys and Girls Basketball, Netball and Rugby – take out their Thames Valley
competitions is a stand out achievement. Not to be outdone, our year on the stage
has been as successful as on the sports field; well done to all students who take part
in these activities. At the same time, none of this is possible without the support of
parents and other members of the community who give time to coaching, managing
and transporting young people – a huge thank you for this.
Subject Selection
A Subject Selection evening will be held on
Thursday 29 September at 7 pm in the college
hall. By that time all Years 10, 11 and 12 students
will have received subject information to guide
them in course selection for 2012. A large
number of staff representing each learning area
will be present at the evening, along with Mr
Keith (Careers Advisor) and Academic Deans (Mrs
Benns and Mr Webster) to assist students and
parents with decision making. It is particularly
important that students take the time to consider
their courses for next year carefully as we use the
information gained from students’ choices to
structure a timetable that will ensure as many
students as possible are able to study the subjects
they want to.
Mr Keith meets with all Year 10 students
individually to provide some assistance with
subject selection as this is a new experience for
them. It is very important that parents are
involved in the the decision making process and
are urged to contact Mr Keith (078677029 or
email peterk@haurakiplains.school.nz if you
would like to be part of your child’s careers
interview. This offer is open to all parents,
regardless of year level.
Y E S (Young Enterprise Studies)
The “Less is More” Album launch held at the end
of term two, was a colossal success amongst the
local community who supported students,
parents and teachers. The Young Enterprise
Team with the help of Hauraki Plains College
music students, were able to showcase a night
filled with notable performances from some very
talented musicians, and not to mention guest
celebrities. Present were Jordan Luck
(Exponents), Annah Mac (Upcoming solo artist)
and Mike Chunn (Split Enz). Each of the famous
New Zealand musicians performed one of their hit
songs, alongside our very own Hauraki Plains
College talent. An enjoyable night was had by all,
with the Young Enterprise group receiving many
positive comments surrounding the concert and
quality of the music on the album itself.
Albums are still available for purchase from the
Office for $10 each and also guitar picks $1,
silicone bands $3 and T-shirts $15. Please support
us by purchasing these items.
Uniform Change Over
Due to the unusual term dates this year the uniform
change over from winter to summer uniform will
start earlier in Term 3 than usual. The change over
period will begin on Monday 12 September and run
to the end of term 3 Friday 7 October. During this
time students may wear either summer sandals or
winter shoes and socks/stockings. From the start of
Term 4 onwards all students are expected to be in
summer uniform – sandals and no scarves. Any
students who do not expect to return to school in
2012 and no longer have sandals may see Mr Jolly
for a pass to continue to wear shoes in Term 4.
Co-Curricular Photos
These photos for music, drama and sports groups
were taken on Tues 30 August. It is hoped to get
proofs of these photos on display in the next
fortnight and order forms will be distributed to
students and available from the Student Centre. It is
anticipated that orders will close in the last week of
term.
A powerful story about choices written by Lance
Wubbels:
In the faint light of the attic, an old man, tall
and stooped, bent his great frame and made
his way to a stack of boxes that sat near one
of the little half-windows. Brushing aside a
wisp of cobwebs, he tilted the top box toward
the light and began to carefully lift out one
old photograph album after another. Eyes
once bright but now dim searched longingly
for the source that had drawn him here.
It began with the fond recollection of the love
his life, long gone, and somewhere in these
albums was a photo of her he hoped to
rediscover. Silent as a mouse, he patiently
opened the long-buried treasures and soon
was lost in a sea of memories. Although his
world had not stopped spinning when his
wife left it, the past was more alive in his
heart than his present loneliness.
Setting aside one of the dusty photo
albums, he pulled from the box what
appeared to be a journal from his grown
son's childhood. He could not recall ever
having seen it before, or that his son had
ever kept a journal. Why did Elizabeth
always save the children's old junk? he
wondered, shaking his white head.
Opening the yellowing pages he glanced
over a short entry, and his lips curved in an
unconscious smile. Even his eyes
brightened as he read the words that spoke
clear and sweet to his soul. It was the voice
of the little boy who had grown up far too
fast in this very house, and whose voice had
grown fainter and fainter over the years.
In the utter silence of the attic, the words of
a guileless six-year-old worked their magic
and carried the old man back to a time
almost totally forgotten.
Reminded that he had kept a journal of his
business activities over the years...Opening
a glass cabinet door, he reached in and
pulled out an old business journal. Turning
he sat down at his desk and placed the two
journals beside each other. His was leatherbound
and engraved neatly with his name
in gold, while his son's was tattered and the
name "Jimmy" had been nearly scuffed
from its surface.
As he opened the journal, the old man's eyes
fell upon an inscription that stood out
because it was so brief in comparison to
other days. In his own neat handwriting
were these words:
Wasted the whole day fishing with Jimmy.
Didn't catch a thing.
With a deep sigh and a shaking hand, he
took Jimmy's journal and found the boy's
entry for the same day, June 4. Large
scrawling letters pressed deeply in the
paper read:
Went fishing with my dad. Best day of my
life.
The Information Hub
Amanda Fitzpatrick
The Hub is buzzing with the up and coming Interschool
Chess Tournament; we have 38 students
willing to compete against other schools which is
fantastic. You can check out our teams on
www.chesspower.co.nz
Our Chess Champ for Term 2 was Nathan
Broadbent with the Checkers Champ being JK
Makiha. Well done, boys.
We have managed to catalogue and put in at least
50 new books which the students are loving.
Thanks to Jackie Uerata, who does all the book
covering in a voluntary capacity.
A recent activity in the Hub at lunchtimes are the
Jigsaw races, working in pairs the kids race to
make their jigsaw which is between 60 and 100
pieces. They are really enjoying this and, of
course, there are prizes for the winners (which
always helps). I actually ran out of jigsaws and had
to buy more from Trade Me as this proved so
popular!
As always, we are looking for old magazines and
newspapers for all departments at schoo; they are
always appreciated.
At present there are far too many overdue books;
it is the student’s job to take responsibility to get
their books back on time or renewed if they want
them longer. The due date is stamped in the
book. Students need to make the right choice of
managing their books, particularly as there are
students who are waiting for a lot of the overdue
books. PLEASE get the books back asap.
Make & Model
Amanda & Christina
The 6 th Make & Model Fashion Show was a huge
success once again with 116 entries competing on
the catwalk to a full house on Saturday night, the
audience were “WOWED” by the talent. The
contestants were amazing and all had a great
time, the confidence oozed out along with the
smiling faces, which is always something special
to see. The boys did a great job being the minority
but also proving they are just as good! Yes
Christina and I put a lot of work into the show,
but without the students and their enthusiasm we
wouldn’t have a show; so we thank them along
with the awesome judges . The date is set for the
7 th show next year August 18 th 2012, Annah
Stretton will be back which is fantastic. A new
category will be “Dare to Dream Street Wear” for
the mums who missed out this year, so sewing
machines out and thinking caps on please. St
Peters of Cambridge have said they loved it and
will be back which is always encouraging. The
fundraiser is always a huge benefit to the “WOW”
girls. By the time you read this newsletter we will
be in Wellington enjoying the “World of Wearable
Arts Show” and having a ball with 22 lovely girls.
Greg Honasan is raising money for his China trip
and is selling the Make and Model Fashion Show
photos along with a $5.00 video. The order forms
can be found at the student centre and the
students are able to view the photos at school on
the intranet. The photos are great and the video
is well worth having.
the college hall. Everyone is welcome
to come and celebrate individual and
Well done to all the teams who made it into finals in their
respective competitions recently. Whilst some of the
results didn’t go HPC’s wa, to be placed runner-up is an
achievement and all students should be proud of their
success. Special congratulations must go to the following
Badminton
The Thames Valley Secondary Schools Senior &
Junior Badminton Championships were recently
held at Thames High School. Some tough
competition from the Valley this year resulted in
our Senior players making the top 8 but
unfortunately knocked out of top 4 titles.
Senior Badminton Team
At the Junior competition, the best placed HPC
students were Richard Tucker & Travis Luke who
placed Runners up in the junior boys Doubles
Plate division. Well done also to Reece Downham
who placed 4 th in the junior girls Singles.
Junior Badminton Team
New Zealand Duathlon Champs
Sophie Pulford has had more success recently at
the NZ Secondary Schools Duathlon Champs
where she competed on Sunday 14 th Aug in
Taupo. With shocking weather conditions, high
winds and hail, she competed in the Girls U14
2.5km run, 10km bike and another 2.5km run. She
had a small lead after the first run but opened up
on the bike leg and was well clear, going into the
second run. A fantastic win considering the
conditions. Well done Sophie.
Swimming
New Zealand Division I Championships
As mentioned in the last issue, Helena Gasson and
Joshua McCormack-Goeth competed at the NZ Short
Course Champs held in Wellington from Sat 6 th Aug –
Tues 9 th . This event attracted swimmers from all
over the country and was combined with the Open
champs this year, which meant our top NZ swimmers
were also competing. Entry to these championships
is by strict qualifying times and pulls in the top
twelve swimmers in each age group in NZ with this
event being the top NZ age group championship in
NZ.
Helena Gasson trains up to 10 sessions a week (each
session around 2 hours) and for the first time won a
National Title in the 200 Butterfly. In her age group
she also won:
Gold 400 Individual Medley
Silver 400 Freestyle
Bronze 200 Freestyle and 800 Freestyle.
She is ranked 4 th in NZ for the 200 Individual Medley
and 5 th in NZ for the 100 Butterfly.
Joshua McCormack-Goeth had just returned from
the Div 2 championships 3 weeks earlier in Rotorua
where he picked up 3 gold, 2 silver and 2 bronze
medals in his age group. The times he swam qualified
him to enter 7 swims in the Wellington meet.
Joshua’s training of 7 sessions a week was not
targeted for this meet, however despite this, Joshua
competed, swam 7 races, qualified for 3 finals and is
ranked in the top 10 in NZ in 100 Butterfly, 100
Individual Medley and 50 Freestyle.
Well done to these swimmers who continue to juggle
school commitments with their training
programmes. Congratulations to you both –
Fantastic effort!!
Skateboarding Championships
A new event was held this year ‘Waikato Secondary
Schools Skateboarding Competition’ on Thursday
11 th August in Hamilton. A small yet keen group of
HPC students stepped up to give it a go. A
challenging course was set up by ‘Cheapskates’
where contestants each had 2 x 1 minute runs on
the circuit to show their skills and tricks. Willie
Ederveen, Jamie Knight, William Carey and
Lawrence Goodwin did extremely well considering
they were up against students who competed
regularly at skateboarding events. Well done boys
– keep practising for next year.
Thames Valley Girls Football Tournament
This Secondary Schools Girls Football Tournament
was held on Wed 10 th Aug at Mercury Bay. Both
our Girls 1 st and 2 nd XI teams travelled over to
compete. A glorious day was had with the
competition very high. Our girls worked hard with
the 1 st XI making it through to the final after 2
wins and 2 draws. A tough final against Katikati
unfortunately resulted in a loss to HPC – a great
match from these two teams. Congratulations to
1 st XI girls for finishing runner up and also to the
2 nd XI team finishing in 6 th place.
MotoX
Amanda Fitzpatrick
The MotoX team have been on holiday for a
couple of months during the winter but we are
now back and have lots going on. The first being
training with Broxy this month at his track at
Greerton which should be fun and hopefully the
team will learn something. The Maize ride is
next up on the 2nd October at Patetonga. The
team is hosting this event to raise money for
the Patetonga MX Club, our turn to give
something back to the community. The club is
trying to buy the land so we are going to help
out.
We also have our “Out of the Clay into the Dust
Round 2” HPC MX Tournament on 9th
December which is already attracting entries
with some very keen riders, I have changed the
classes to make it more “rider friendly”, along
with encouraging the young people who just
ride on the farm or do trail rides to give the
track a go. If you have any queries about MotoX
you can contact me via email
Shooting
In July our shooting teams attended a shoot at
the Waikato Gun Club hosted by Hamilton Boys
gaining 1 st place overall in the girls events. The
good team effort of Fiona Donaldson and
Rachael van Bysterveldt gained them 1 st place in
the girls team event.
Gavin and Andrew Wenham travelled to Timaru
in July to attend the South Island Secondary
well and gained himself a 1 st place in the Single
Rise event and 1 st place Overall Boy for the day.
Our August shoot which was held in Thames
also saw Fiona and Rachael do well as a team,
winning the Girls Team event. Fiona got 2 nd
Hauraki Under 14 Representative Netball
Team
On Sunday 10th July the Thames Valley
Championships were held at Matamata. The U14
Hauraki team won both their games against Te
Aroha 44-23 and Morrinsville 28-21 to be the
outright winners of the tournament and bring
home the Under 14 Thames Valley Championship
Trophy.
Hockey News
This term has been a busy term as far as
tournaments are concerned. We started the term
with the Bethlehem Tournament where our 1st and
2nd XI teams participated. The girls came 3rd and
the boys won the boys section (which was lucky as
we had forgotten to get the trophy engraved).
Last week our Boys and Girls 1st XI teams travelled
to their respective tournaments. The girls travelled
to Wanganui where they won their pool and then
after a couple of losses finished 7th (an
improvement on last year).
The boys flew down to Nelson and also finished top
of their pool. They won the quarter final and then
in the last 30 seconds of the game lost to Scots
College who won the tournament. The boys
eventually came 3rd after an exciting last game.
The U14 Team was Te Ara Watene-Mercep, Sarah
Speedy, Kelly Hamilton, Brittany Baker,
Natasha Watters, Tiffany Challis, Hannah
Berridge, Shyanne Thompson., Jurney Stewart.
Congratualtions to these girls – tremendous effort.
Lunch Time Activities
At lunchtimes Volleyball is now running every
Monday and Friday as students are gearing up for
their Thames Valley event. Badminton is running
Tuesday & Thursday lunchtimes. Anyone welcome
to join in, just turn up in your PE gear.
Many thanks to the managers and coaches who put
in lots of hours to enable the tournament to run
smoothly and the parents who gave up a week of
their time to help with the cooking, cleaning and
driving.
Our B teams are also playing well in the Thames
Valley secondary boys and girls competitions and
are looking like strong contenders for the finals.
Good luck to those teams.
For the few people who have not paid their hockey
fees these are now well overdue $110 B teams and
$130 A teams.
Christina Stilwell
TIC Hockey
Table Tennis is available in the
Wharekai and now thanks to two
community volunteers Bowls will be
happening in the Gym at Wednesday
lunchtimes. Come check it out and
give it a go!!!
If you would like to see a particular
sport or activity being held at
lunchtimes please let the sport coordinator
know.
A range of balls and racquets are
available for use at lunchtimes, come
to the gym at the beginning of lunch if
you would like to utilise these.
Please note: whilst we do our best to recognise
all recent outstanding achievements there may
have been some missed. If this is the case please
bring this to the attention of the Sport and
Recreation Coordinator.
Inter-Hapu Points Update
Parents and Teenage Drivers
As a parent, you may have lost a little sleep or
noticed a few more gray hairs as your teen
grabbed the car keys and started driving. But what
you may not realise is your involvement in
teaching your teen to drive is critical. How you
drive, what you say about driving – everything you
do – sets the tone for what your teen can model
behind the wheel of the car. So talk with your teen
about driving sober and without distractions and
then practice what you preach. And if you want a
little help, the good news is that a free website is
available to help parents and caregivers:

www.safeteendriver.co.nz
The resource is put together by the NZ
Transport Agency in collaboration with a
parent / teen relationship psychologist and an
expert in driving psychology.
The website has lost of great tips to help you
connect with your teenager and tools to teach
them how to become a safer driver.
