End of term
Dear parents and caregivers
With the centennial celebrations only three weeks away, at Monday
morning assemblies, our focus is on learning about and appreciating our
story including the incredible contribution families and individuals from the
past have made to this school. The Hayward family is one such example.
William and Dora Hayward arrived on the Hauraki Plains in 1914 in the year
when ‘The Dogbox’ was constructed; their arrival marked the beginning of
the family’s long association with the school and its community. William
practised as a land valuer and also built and operated an abattoir on his
farm as well as butcher shop in Ngatea. William became chairman of the
school committee and the Hayward farm was frequently used as grounds
for school sports and picnic days.
Their son Hugh Hayward started school in April 1917; he recalls arriving at
school in a dinghy before the bridge across the Piako was built. Like his
father, he too became very involved both in supporting Ngatea District High
School and also in local government. In fact Hugh served on the NDHS
management committee and later the Hauraki Plains College Board of
Governors for a total of 44 years before retiring in 1989.
Hugh Hayward and his wife had eight children. Their third child,
Lorraine starting Ngatea District High School in 1943. She returned
as a probationary teacher in 1957 and later became head of the
‘Slow Learners’ department (a term which would be frowned on
nowadays although many owe much to her wonderful way of
helping more challenged learners to read.) Lorraine Hayward was a
talented Hockey player, representing NZ in the 1959 touring team
and many pupils over the years have benefitted from her coaching.
Nowadays, Miss Hayward is still associated with the college,
principally as a tutor to international students. She also needs to be
acknowledged as one of the original farm founders for the
Haurakian Charitable Trust farm. This year we have over 120
students who are taking Agriculture, doing much of their practical
work on the original Hayward farm. And so this remarkable legacy
of the Hayward family continues into the next century.
On the weekend of March 23 – 25, we are aiming to have up to 400
current students at the powhiri on the Saturday morning to
welcome back those who have gone before. If any story convinced
us of how much we owe to individuals and families, the Hayward
story does.
logging on to www.schoolinterviews.co.nz with the code
GLA7B or phoning the student centre at the college (07)
River Focus
Year 11
The theme for the Year 11's is `I go for it'
which is about trying hard this year so that
everyone can get the credits they are
capable and that are reflective of their
ability. Also, from the Year 11 Dean, there
has been a huge improvement in the number
of students not wearing excessive make-up.
Year 12
The Year 12 river group focus for 2012 is
“Captaining the Ship.” River guides and
students will be discussing preparation for
leadership and will include strategies for
achieving NCEA Level 2 and its importance
for further education and employment.
Students will also be developing and refining
learning pathways for Year 13. We have
picked up the mantra Attitude is everything
in terms of being positive and respectful to
one another and towards their work.
Developing such an attitude is essential for
the workforce.
Peer Tutoring
A Group of Year 13’s have made themselves
available for peer tutoring this year for any
students in year 9, 10 or 11. If you are
interested please contact Mrs Benns, Harry
War Horse
A Year 10 English class and Year 12 History
students went to see the WW1 film War
Horse in Thames on Feb 17th. For the
History students, who are studying the war,
the film provided a graphic depiction of the
strategies and sacrifice of the Western
Front. English students were able to
compare the film version to the novel they
studied last year. It was a fun and
worthwhile school trip which extended the
students’ classroom learning.
Visit to Auckland University
Library
Year 13 History students were able to visit
the Auckland University Library to use their
computer data base and impressive
collection of primary and secondary
sources. The Library has again been very
supportive of our students – providing
them with a computer room, photocopy
card and an introductory talk about the
language and spelling of the Tudor-Stuart
period to assist their interpretation of
primary sources. The students found the
detective work of research quite exciting
and challenging and came away with
valuable sources for their research
projects.
Thinking of trying something new on-farm? Tried
something new and facing challenges? Need help
now?
Dairy Connect is a DairyNZ initiative being piloted in the
North Waikato. We aim to connect farmers to share
topic specific information and experiences. This new
approach will bring farmers together to learn from each
other.
We know that many farmers when planning new
initiatives on-farm, or are facing a challenge, appreciate
contact with other farmers that have tried and
succeeded. Dairy Connect makes it easy for those
valuable connections to be made. If you would like to
learn more or get connected send your name, contact
details and the area you would like support in to
At this time of year there are a lot of winter sports
codes and teams looking to start their pre-season
trainings, trials and musters. Whilst the actions of
coaches and trainers to get their teams physically
ready for the demands of the particular winter sport
should be commended – it must be remembered that
if a student has a commitment to a summer sport then
this takes precedence over any winter sport trials,
trainings and meetings. Should a student need to be in
2 places at once then they are to go to the summer
sport first and then catch up with the staff member
concerned with regards to the winter sport. If any
students are unsure of who this is then there is a list of
the teachers in charge on the sports noticeboard.
HPC Swimming Champs
Another beautifully fine day on the Hauraki Plains
greeted the whole junior school as well as those keen
seniors for the annual HPC Swimming Champs on
Tuesday 7 th February. It was great to see the increase
in students entering the championship events which
makes for some great racing as well as Hapu rivalry.
Congratulations to all who took part – particularly to
those students who aren’t that keen on swimming but
still managed to get at least a point for your HAPU
through participation – well done.
After all the data was entered the respective
National Swimming Events
This is a busy time of year for a number of our
competitive swimmers. NZ national events
have strict qualifying times and four of our
swimmers from HPC have qualified to swim a
number of events in upcoming national
championships. Helena Gasson and Joshua
McCormack-Goeth will be travelling to
Wellington in March to compete in the top NZ
Age group championships while Libby Gray and
Georgia McCormack-Goeth will be travelling to
Dunedin in the holidays to complete in the NZ
Div 2 Swimming Championships.
All four swimmers have continued training over
the summer holidays to build up to these
national meets. At the recent
Counties/Manukau championships in January,
Helena picked up 9 gold medals and a race
record. Joshua gained 10 gold medals, 1 silver,
1 bronze and 6 race records. Libby achieved 2
silver and 1 bronze medal and Georgia also
picked up a bronze medal at this championship
event. At a recent short course event at
Matamata, Joshua broke the Waikato 13 year
old record for the 50m fly. This record has not
been broken for 17 years and was set by Ross
Dunwoody in 1995.
Lunch Time Activities
welcome to join in.
Table Tennis will soon be available in the gym
and also coming soon Karate and a Tennis
Netball
Trials for the College teams
will be taking place over the
next few weeks.
Netball begins the first week
back in Term 2 (26/27 April).
There has been a proposal to
change netball from a Friday
night to a Thursday night. This
will be voted on at the next
Centre meeting.
If you are interested in
Coaching or Managing a team
please contact Lynette Benns.
At this stage we are looking at
12/13 teams, all of which
require a Coach and a
Manager and an UMPIRE.
Many thanks to the
parents/caregivers and HPC
students who have already
volunteered to help with the
teams.
We are always short of
umpires and would really
appreciate it if you are
interested in helping us in this
area. Each College team does
need an umpire and the
Netball Centre is in the
process of formulating some
rules relating to attending
umpires classes, etc.
If you have any queries about
netball, please don’t hesitate
to contact Lynette Benns or
Amanda Fitzpatrick
Tuesday 28th February the MX team thought it was
Christmas... today was the day that they got to ride with
Michael and John Phillips as well as Rhys Carter, all top
NZ Motocross riders, who featured in the Nationals on
Sunday. Here they were back again to teach our team
some new techniques on a not so friendly track as no
grooming had been done after the big day on Sunday. A
great way to learn.
31 riders on the track is daunting for me so I can only
imagine what the new kids on the team were thinking,
but I’m very proud of the new team members, they dug
in and showed their resilience and were all beaming midway
through the day. They soaked up the coach’s advice
and put it into practice.
This team worked hard all day and it showed. Most had
sweat pouring off their faces along with the beaming
smiles which is always a good mixture as well as the
thumbs up. Learning to ride the ruts and follow the lines
in the track was big for some riders today, with others it
was conquering the start gates, whatever the instruction
was all the riders gave 100% back to the coaches.
Learning how to position themselves on their bikes was
another key aspect which I know a lot of the riders
appreciated. Rhys Carter commented on how respectful
and well-mannered the riders were which is a credit to
them, their families and our school.
Michael Phillips said “The guys and girls all looked like
they had a good day and weren't put off too much by the
rough NZ championship track. The rough track taught the
riders how to pick the best lines for their ability and really
focus on a good strong body position.”
Always great to get positive feedback.
