Junior Prize Giving
Last day for Juniors
Term four is a very short and event packed term as a result of the Rugby
World Cup, but the end result made the rearrangement to the normal
school calendar well worth it. In the afterglow of the All Black’s victory,
World Teachers Day came and went last week largely unnoticed. It is with
good reason, however, that teachers are acknowledged. While family and
increasingly peers are the most important people in a young person’s life,
teachers also have a significant impact. It was Haim Ginott, an Israeli
teacher and psychologist who wrote, “I've come to the frightening
conclusion that I am the decisive element in the classroom. It's my daily
mood that makes the weather. As a teacher, I possess a tremendous
power to make a child's life miserable or joyous. I can be a tool of torture
or an instrument of inspiration. I can humiliate or humour, hurt or heal. In
all situations, it is my response that decides whether a crisis will be
escalated or de-escalated and a child humanized or de-humanized.”
It is clear from research by John Hattie (University of Auckland) for
example, that alongside the aptitude and motivation of the student and
expectations of the parent, that the quality of teaching is a significant
determining factor in student learning outcomes. Continuous
improvement in classroom practice is best done as a collaborative effort
and over the past year, our teachers have focused on using feedback and
feedforward to support student learning, building learning capability (ie
teaching what it means and how to be a lifelong learner) and developing
learning focused and culturally responsive relationships.
Staff have also developed smaller professional learning groups around
specific foci including literacy strategies for the classroom, engaging boys
for better learning outcomes, assessment for learning, learning to learn
strategies, effective use of ICT and strategies for enhancing student
engagement. Whether we are talking about student learning or teacher
learning, we work on the principle that ‘nobody can get there unless
everybody gets there.’
Between now and the end of the school year are a number of celebrations
including Sports Prize giving, Year 13 Graduation, Senior Academic Prize
giving and Junior Diploma Awards ceremony. A warm welcome to these
events and all the best to senior students for external exams.
Junior Reports
Junior Reports, which include grades and
comments for term three work, will now be issued
on Thursday 10 November. While it would have
been preferable to have these out to students
before Junior exams, it was not possible given the
time needed for data entry and checking. This is
also a couple of days later than indicated in an
earlier newsletter; we have had a number of
computer network problems which we have had
to grapple with and have impacted on the timing
for when reports are issued. If as a parent you
have any concerns about your child’s report,
please contact Rob Webster, Junior Academic
Dean.
Apologies
We have recently been trialling a text messaging
system to remind parents / caregivers of
important events. While we have had some
positive feedback, others have mentioned that
some texts are arriving in the early hours of the
morning, something we have had no control over.
Our sincere apologies for this and we will certainly
rethink this mode of communicating.
Sports Prizegiving
Friday 25 November
Our annual sports prize giving will be held in the
college hall on Friday 25 November at 7 pm.
Students have been notified if they are receiving
prizes. All welcome.
Whanau Hui
Tues 15 Nov
As indicated at our last whanau hui, our focus for
this one will be looking at culturally responsive
ways of working. It will also be an occasion to
acknowledge Maori students who have
demonstrated excellence in their learning and cocurricular
endeavours.
Year 13 Graduation
Thursday 1 December
Invites for the Year 13 Graduation evening will
shortly be issued to students who have completed
their graduation requirements. Parents and
caregivers are welcome to attend. This is a
celebration which marks the end of school days for
both students and their parents and as such is a
significant occasion for them. We look forward to
marking this occasion with you. Formal dress
required.
Senior Academic Prize giving
The Senior Academic Prize giving is an occasion in
which those students who have achieved
excellence in their classroom studies are
acknowledged. It is certainly deemed to be one of
the most important occasions on the school
calendar. Students who are receiving prizes will
be notified around mid November and will be
required to come in for a practice on ‘Sign Out’
day.
Teacher Only Day
Friday 11 November
This is the second of the Teacher Only Days given
by the Ministry of Education to give schools time
to grapple with the changes to NCEA Levels 1 and
2. Normal classes will not run on this day.
Parent Forum
Monday 7 November
Our next Parent Forum is scheduled for Mon 7
November in the Hub. Discussion will focus
around strategic planning for next year, where ICT
is going and the Health Curriculum. All welcome.
Junior Prizegiving
Wed 7 December
Junior Diploma Graduation and Prizegiving will be
held at 10 am in the college hall on Wed 7
December. For Year 10 students, this is a
celebration of two years of working towards their
Junior Diploma and it is always a great occasion for
teachers as well as students and their families.
Academic awards for both Years 9 and 10 is also
part of the Junior Prize giving. All welcome
Sign Out Process for Senior Students
As of Monday November 7 th most senior students
will be eligible to either go on study leave or sign out
of school for the year. Students that have not yet
completed their course of study, will remain at
school until this is completed.
If a student has External Examinations and has been
granted study leave, they can complete the
clearance/sign out process after their final
examination.
Students will need to return all text books, school
resources, pay all fees owing and complete any
outstanding school consequences to be cleared for
sign out.
Some students will be required to return to school
for Sports and/or Academic Prize-giving preparation.
These students will be notified of this.
The North Island and New Zealand Secondary
School Championships were held in Hamilton on
the 8 th , 9 th and 10 th of October this year.
We had some great individual successes with
Gavin Wenham winning High Overall in the
Point Score event, 1 st in the New Zealand Single
Rise and 2 nd in the North Island Single Rise.
Rachael Van Bysterveldt took out 2 nd place in
the North Island champs and won the NZ Ladies
Skeet title.
Auckland / Waikato Fish and Game, who
sponsor the event, also have a competition
between the regions. Fiona Donaldson and
Rachael van Bysterveldt were in the winning
ladies team and Gavin Wenham was a member
of the boys team that was placed 3 rd . He also
came 1 st in the individual event. Well done!
HPC MotoX Team
Amanda Fitzpatrick
The clock is ticking away as we near our
second MX tournament to be held on Friday
December 9 th . Entries are rolling in with the
Wairoa team bringing 12. This confirms for me
that there is a need for these MX events.
Changing the classes this time to beginners,
intermediate and pro gives the students who
need more experience on their bikes a chance
to have a go on a motox track which will help
to grow the sport. When I think back there
were a lot of students that didn’t think they
were capable. Now with some training from
Broxy and joining the Patetonga Club they are
smiling and have the belief in themselves
which is what it is all about. We welcome Ben
Broad, Rikki Morritt and Stanley Burge (who
will be coming to HPC over the next year or
two) onto the HPC MotoX team. It is great to
have new young blood coming through.
I’d like to take this chance to thank everyone
who is helping our team in marshalling etc. It
makes a big difference when you have such
supportive people and we always appreciate it.
If you have time to spare on the 9 th it would be
great to see you at the Patetonga track. The
hockey team will have food and drinks
available so it is a good chance to support the
hockey as well.
The MX team have also decided to wear pink
mohawks on the day to support NZ Breast
Cancer but also so we can recognise them! Our
team will also be donating some money
towards Breast Cancer appeal as well as having
a Breast Cancer stall on the day.
