Supporting Earthquake
Victims
A mufti-day will be held on
Thursday 17 March to
support earthquake victims.
$2.00 for students to wear
mufti. Students are reminded
that appropriate clothing is
required, ie footwear
required, no gang colours,
skimpy tops or shorts.
Tena Koutou matua ma
Dear parents and caregivers
Our thoughts are very much with the people of Christchurch as they
come to terms with the earthquake which has caused so much tragedy
and destruction.
A key question we are asking to students at the moment is Who is in
control of your remote? Proactive people recognise that they can’t
control everything that happens to them, but they can control what they
do about it. They take charge of their lives, know that they are
responsible for their own actions and think before they act. They keep
the ‘remote control’ of their lives in their own hands.
Reactive people on the other hand, often act on impulse. If life shakes
them up a bit, or they don’t like what another person does, they react
without stopping to think of the consequences. When they react, it’s like
allowing another person to take charge of their remote control, allowing
someone else to push their buttons.
In River time, we are asking students to reflect on their learning goals
and be proactive in terms of working toward them. Setting goals is the
easy bit, the hard bit is making the choices every day to achieve them.
Success comes in small steps and so does failure. Failure is not a single
event; we usually don’t fail overnight or on a single test day. For much of
the time, not succeeding is nothing more than a few poor choices
repeated every day.
Why would we do this, repeat the same poor choices every day?
Because we don’t think it matters. One more TV programme, a couple of
hours on Facebook, skipping homework – these don’t usually result in an
instant and measurable impact. More often than not, there are few
immediate consequences so we repeat our poor choices every day, week
after week, month after month. Before long the day of reckoning comes
and the prices must be paid for those poor daily choices.
Proactive people take small steps every day towards achieving what they
have set out to do. They firmly keep the remote control of their lives in
our own hands.
This year, a group of year 13 students will be
giving up one or two of their studies a week
to help out in junior classes. This
programme aims to offer support to
students and give extra help in the
classroom.
This programme will hopefully start in the
next fortnight.
Motivating Learning within our school
(from the Academic Leaders)
This year we have further developed the 2:12
award. The 2:12 award used to recognise the
best work, but now has been modified to
recognise the students that make a continuous
outstanding effort or improvement, to produce
the best work that they can. The 2:12 award
now recognises students of all ages and abilities
and not necessarily those who are the most
academic. Teachers award the student(s) they
think have made the most outstanding effort or
improvement with a slip and this student goes
to Mrs Harris’s office at 2:12pm during their
lunch break, with their work to receive a small
reward (cookie or pen). Before every assembly,
all 212 awards nominations will be considered
by Mrs Harris and the Academic leadership
team, who will choose the most outstanding.
This student will receive the new Best Work
badge and will be put in a draw to win a laptop.
All other nominees will receive a certificate.
The laptop prize will be drawn at the end of the
year and is completely random as to who
receives it. The most outstanding student from
the whole year will receive a trophy at prize
giving.
O.P.C. (Outdoor Pursuits Centre) Applications
On Tuesday the applications to attend both the Year 12 OPC camp at Tongariro (60 places) and
the Year 13 OPC camp at Great Barrier Island (30 places) were made available.
The applications close for both camps on Friday the 4th March. Make sure the HPC Consent,
Method of Payment, OPC Medical and Consent forms are fully completed and handed in with the
deposit.
This year because the Gear Hire is now incorporated into the cost and the increased cost of travel
the cost of the Year 12 OPC Experience is $540. The cost to attend the Year 13 camp is $652.
Mrs Uerata has been working very hard in The
Hub covering all the new books, the smiles
from the kids when these books go on the
shelves is second to none.
The chess tournament is well under way for
this term and with 32 players we have a few
games to get through for the 1st round. Lovely
to see the Year 9’s competing and some even
teaching themselves through books so they
can join. I hope to be hosting another
tournament inviting outside schools to
compete with Chess Kids some time in the
near future.
The Hub as per usual is buzzing at lunchtimes
even though the heat has been extreme at
times. It doesn’t seem to worry the kids
“chilling out”, mingling and meeting new
people.
I have also managed to grab a deal on a new
set of World Books (encyclopaedias) for half
price. Ours are well used and eight years old,
the good news is that we get to donate the old
set to Hockey for their book fair to sell, so a
win-win situation which is always a good
thing.
Please remember we are always looking for
old newspaper and magazines for all
departments at school, we never seem to
have enough, our arms are always open for
these.
NCEA Endorsement Recognition Evening
An evening to recognise those students who have achieved
NCEA with Merit or Excellence will be held on Tuesday 1
March 7pm in the college hall. To achieve an endorsement
takes a lot of hard work and deserves this recognition.
Parent / Caregiver Involvement
It was great to see so many parents at our Year 9 evening. We have a number of further events
happening this term which parents are welcome to attend.
An NCEA Information evening for Year 11 parents will be held on Tuesday 15 March . This will provide
an opportunity for parents to learn more about how NCEA works, ask questions in an informal forum
and also learn some helpful tips in terms of how to best help your child with NCEA ahead.
Parent Council is on the term calendar for Monday 28 March at 7pm in the Hub. This is an informal
opportunity for parents to ask questions, bring concerns, suggest ideas or give feedback regarding any
school matter. Please don’t think that because you attend you will be given a job to do! The forum is
simply to give an opportunity for parents and caregivers to meet with Senior Management and a BOT
member so that parents feel informed and listened to.
Sports Council operates to enable a consistent approach for the numerous sporting codes represented
at HPC. If you are interested in being involved in a sporting code or for more information email Bill
Cooksley, Sports Co-ordinator (sport@haurakiplains.school.nz)
Athletic finals are happening on the college fields on Wednesday 2 march. If your child says parents
don’t come to watch, don’t believe them! Was wonderful to see so many parents pop along to the
recent swimming sports and athletic prelims. Athletics is always a colourful event so would be great to
see parents along.
Parents are welcome to make contact with the principal at any time if you have a concern or simply wish
to give feedback on any matter. Either phone 078677029 ext 804 or email
Attendance Information
Expected Absences – Students throughout the
course of the upcoming year will be repeatedly
encouraged to be proactive about their absences.
This is in keeping with the key competency of
managing self and also serves as a means of
preparing themselves for life after school. If a
student has prior knowledge of an impending
absence (i.e. for a specialist appointment or a
specific family commitment) they are expected to
forewarn the school of the day(s) that they will be
absent for. In the case of ill health or a recent
development that requires a student to be absent
then it is expected that the school is notified at
the earliest practicable time.
Legitimate Absences – The start of the year is a
timely occasion to remind all that it is the Ministry
of Education not the school that deems certain
absences as “explained but unjustified”.
Legitimate reasons for student absenteeism
include the following situations: reasons of poor
health, attending out of school exams,
doctors/dentists appointments, to attend court,
bereavement leave or in cases of exceptional
family circumstances. Any other absences (e.g. a
holiday, working, missed transport, etc) are
deemed as unjustified. In some cases the
Principal of a school may grant discretionary leave
for things such as overseas trip or representative
sporting commitments, but any such applications
should be made in writing to Mrs Harris.
Work Commitments – Many school students have
part time jobs and balancing the commitments of
work, school and a social life can be a tricky task.
Parents & employers are reminded that work
obligations are not permitted to interfere with
their school commitments; this means that they
are not permitted to absent themselves from
school for the purpose of travelling to work and
that being in paid employment during normal
school hours is actually illegal and carries a
substantial fine. HPC operates an extensive
Gateway work experience programme & this is the
only legitimate means for a student to be at work
during the school day. Should you wish to
discuss/arrange work experience for your student
please contact Mr Keith in the careers centre.
Not Required to Attend School
This is a common reason that is given by
students when they have been absent from
school, particularly when there is an activity
such as a camp or a sports event on. It is very
rare for students to be “not required to be at
school”; exam leave and teacher only days are
two of the few examples of this. When this
situation does occur, families will receive ample
notification via newsletters and notices home
and the school encourages parents/caregivers to
contact the school should they have any queries
pertaining to such a situation. With Athletics
days coming up in Term 1, please note that even
if your child is not involved they are still required
to attend school on these days.
Should parents/caregivers have any attendance
concerns or queries pertaining to their child they
should contact the relevant Dean or Mr Rob
Jolly, Deputy Principal.
Contact Details:
A new school year has seen many of the same
old issues around contacting home still in place.
The College generally seeks to contact a parent
or caregiver for reasons of student well being,
absences/attendance or to pass on information
about special school events. This is becoming
increasingly more difficult with the large number
of out of date/disconnected phone numbers and
a lack of cell alterative contact details. Parents
& Caregivers are again urged to keep the school
informed of any changes in their contact details,
in particular phone numbers. This will become
even more important as later this term the
school begins to use the School-Links early
notification and message system. This will allow
the College & caregivers to communicate with
regards to student absences, but will also be an
effective means of communicating important
school notices and information.
The Attendance Officer, who regularly contacts
caregivers, has been asked to record the names
of students for whom there are no valid contact
details. These students will be issued a contact
details form to take home & update with one
school week.
Changes to the Consequence System:
The HAURAKI WAY sets out our expectations for student conduct. We encourage students
to take responsibility for their behaviour and to understand that choices have consequences.
Late in 2010 a review of the consequence system at the time was conducted. This involved
taking note of concerns that both staff & students had around the old system. The challenge
lay in devising a system that:

allows students to put things right,
is manageable & functional,
is a deterrent to unacceptable behaviour,
it just and fair,
seeks to restore or maintain positive student/teacher relationships,
Supports the classroom teacher in dealing with issues that arise in their class,
doesn’t cause student resentment or disengagement.
The end result led to the refinement of the existing system, the rebranding of several
consequences, amending what students were doing during their time in consequences, and
most importantly a drive to see staff manage low level poor behaviour in class through a
restorative process involving mini-chats and a behaviour contract. The following table
breaks down the type of consequence that a student may incur and why, then when it will
be held and what they will be doing during their time in that consequence.
sanding desk tops, etc.
Or write out the Hauraki
Way or Common
Classroom Standards &
then reflect on behaviour
that led to consequence
Under the supervision of a
deputy principal, students will
either carry out a community
service task or a self
reflection activity. Failure to
attend (or notify of inability
to attend) will constitute
continual disobedience & is
grounds for the most severe
of consequences.
On the topic of consequences; a reminder that the College will be continuing with the
practice of contacting the parents/caregivers of students if they are withdrawal from class.
Students are most commonly removed from a class for incidents of continual low level
misbehaviour, on-going unacceptable behaviour, defiance or safety concerns. The phone
call that a parent/caregiver receives serves as a way of advising home of issues at school, the
student centre staff who make this call have little information to hand other than the
withdrawal form. If further clarification is sought then contact should be made with a
student’s Dean the following day. This allows the Dean the opportunity to investigate the
decision to withdrawal a student from class and allows caregivers the opportunity to discuss
the incident with their child.
Health Matters:
Two Health Care visits to be aware of:
• The Mighty Mouth Dental service will
be in the school from Monday 28
March to 1 April seeing students from
all year groups.
• Year 10 vision testing is due to take
place Tue 29 March for all Year 10
Students.
If you want more information
regarding anything to do with
sport at Hauraki Plains College
then please contact the sports
coordinator at
sport@haurakiplains.school.nz.
You may (or may not) have heard that I will be finishing my
job as the Sport and Recreation Coordinator at HPC on the
4th March of this year. I would just like to take this
opportunity to personally thank ALL of those staff members,
parents, caregivers and community volunteers who have
made my job that much easier over the past 4 years. To take
part in sport is in every kiwi kids blood, however the
opportunity for the students to take part is due in large to the
commitment of the adult population to stick their hand up
and say ‘yep – I’ll coach or manage that team, or wash that kit
or do the scorebook or umpire or ref’.
It has been said before – but it needs to keep being said –
sport just wouldn’t happen without volunteers. My request to
you is to just keep doing what you are doing so that our
young people can thrive in the sporting world.
I’m sure that the new Sport and Recreation Coordinator will
get the same level of support that I have had from the HPC
‘family’. After all – excellence is out tradition. Thank you.
At this time of year there are a lot of winter sports codes and
teams looking to start their pre-season trainings, trials and
musters. Whilst the actions of coaches and trainers to get
their teams physically ready for the demands of the particular
winter sport should be commended – it must be remembered
that if a student has a commitment to a summer sport then
this takes precedence over any winter sport trials, trainings
and meetings. Should a student need to be in 2 places at once
then they are to go to the summer sport first and then catch
up with the staff member concerned with regards to the
winter sport. If any students are unsure of who this is then
there is a list of the Teacher’s in Charge on the sports
noticeboard. A list is also printed in this newsletter for staff.
HPC Swimming Champs
Another beautifully fine day on the Hauraki Plains greeted the
whole junior school as well as those keen seniors for the
annual HPC Swimming Champs on Tuesday 8th February. It
was great to see the increase in students entering the
championship events which makes for some great racing as
well as Hapu rivalry. Congratulations to all who took part –
particularly to those students who aren’t that keen on
swimming but still managed to get at least a point for your
HAPU through participation – well done.
After all the data was entered the respective champions for each grade were as follows:
Recent Achievements
Shooting
Gavin Wenham has continued his success from 2010
into this year with more success at the Thames Club
Championships and the North Island DTL Club
Championships.
At the Thames Club Champs he gained the High
Overall in the Ball Trap. At the North Island DTL
Champs he was the High Overall Junior in the Triples
as well as the High Overall Junior over the 2 days.
He was also selected for the North Island Junior
Team for the North / South match that will take
place at the nationals in March.
Hockey Representatives
Congratulations to Zoe Summers, Danielle Bath and
Kayla Povey for their selection for the Midlands U15
summer camp squad. As a result they played in a
curtain raiser to the Blacksticks game that was
played in Hamilton on the 18th February. – well
done girls.
Triathlon
Sophie Pulford has shown her emerging talent
at the recent Contact Triathlon series in
Taupo. Competing in the womens 3:9:3 race
(300 metre swim, 9k bike and 3 k run) she
outclassed the opposition to win by over a
minute in a time of 34 mins 21 seconds.
Sophie also recently competed in the ‘Bev
May 2 day Cycle Race in Morrinsville and won
the U15 grade by 46 seconds.
Congratulations Sophie.
Volleyball
Lunchtime volleyball is operating every
Tuesday and Thursday in the school gym for
the remainder of this term. Any students
wanting to take part just turn up – you must
be wearing PE gear though.
Cricket
Congratulations to the Junior Boys team who have
progressed to the next round of the NZCT NZ
Secondary Schools Junior Boys T20 competition
after defeating Te Aroha last Monday (21st
February). Chasing a good score of 123 set by Te
Aroha, Craig Richards and Richard Tucker set the
platform with an opening stand of 89 – Craig
eventually going out for 39. Richard then
continued to anchor the innings and, with good
support from Maddy Aislabie, hit the winning run
to bring up his50 not out.
Well done boys – a great all round team effort
from everyone involved.
The Boys 1st XI had their first round of the Gillette
cup on the 24th February but at the time of writing
this article the game has not been played. The girls
play their first round in Te Aroha on the 28th
February.
All 3 teams have started their respective ‘league’
competitions with the boys 1st XI notching up a
couple of good wins. In the first week they
defeated Thames to win back the Sheppard Trophy
- Nathan Kane scoring 68 not out. He then
continued this form into the next week scoring a
century and was ably assisted by Thomas Prescott
(76) and Jordan Walker (39). Well done boys and
here’s hoping this form continues for the rest of
this term.
I have posted off 27 entries to the Western
Heights Tournament for Friday April 8th which
is absolutely awesome, so our whole team will
be competing for Hauraki Plains College. The
Broxy training camp will be happening in March
over 2 days in preparation for Western Heights
and our MX Tournament to be held on Friday
May 6th. Our MX tournament to be held at
Patetonga is causing huge excitement amongst
the schools and entries are already flowing in. If
you know any students who ride and would like
to compete for their school they can download
all the information from www.silverbullet.co.nz
under Hauraki Plains College MX Event.
We are able to purchase most of our tools for
the MX trailer thanks to Southern Trust giving
us $2000, so the trailer will be fully equipped to
look after any bikes that need maintenance on
the day! Michael Pou has been busy working on
the trailer which looks to be finished hopefully
next month.
I am sure the kids realise now after doing the
Valley Champs that the Marshalls job is
extremely important and is the lifeline to the
riders if they fall – good job done by all and as
in most sports codes fundraising is necessary
whether we like it or not. We are extremely
lucky to have this fundraising opportunity.
The team and their supporters have also been
busy throughout the Xmas holidays and
February doing marshalling at the Patetonga
MX Club which has certainly helped out the
team. I’d like to take this opportunity to thank
everyone who have put their hands up,
although not a very nice job, it is a great
opportunity for the kids to watch and learn
while doing the job of marshalling. Also a big
thank you to the Year 12 & 13 Building team
and Mr Carpenter who are going out to put up
shelter at the track so our Marshalls won’t get
burnt or wet for future engagements.
