Dear parents and caregivers
This term our charter focus is Flat out and Loving it. Represented by the
pukeko, flat out and loving it reminds us to give things a go and get
involved. An aspect of the HPC culture is the considerable range of
sporting and cultural opportunities for students outside the classroom.
We know that when young people keep busy, enjoy a range of interests
and belong to a club or group with similar interests, their chances of
engaging positively in school and the developing a sense of community
increases considerably. If as a parent or student, you would like to see
an interest club get established, don’t hesitate to make contact.
Of course, with opportunities comes responsibilities. This week all
students will be signing a ‘Code of Conduct’ for sporting, cultural and
other activities. This is very similar to ‘The Hauraki Way’ but applied to
activities outside the classroom. Students are also reminded that
representing the college in any way is a privilege and if attendance,
behavioural, or classroom learning become significant concerns, then
withdrawal from a co-curricular activity may be considered.
Flat out and loving it also applies to the classroom with our current focus
on the characteristics of a lifelong learner, which students know as the 4
Rs:
Resilience: being motivated, managing distractions and
persevering
Resourcefulness: knowing how and where to find information
and being able to learn in different ways
Reflectiveness: knowing yourself as a learner, how you learn best
and planning ahead
Reciprocity: being able to learn on your own and with others
Students will be doing a learning inventory in river time in which they will
assess their lifelong learning capabilities and then set a goal around one
of the 4 Rs.
Also with regard to classroom learning, reports will be issued to all
students next week followed by report interviews in Week 5. Details for
making appointments will be issued with reports. Students are
encouraged to attend report interviews with parents. We look forward
to this opportunity to meet with parents and to discuss your child’s progress
in their learning.
“ANYONE FOR A SPELLING BEE?”
Excitement is building towards the school production
of the Tony award winning musical “The 25 th Annual
Putnam county Spelling Bee” by William Finn, Rachel
Sheinkin and Rebecca Feldman which will be staged
later this term.
As part of the preparation, the college is planning two
spelling bee (competitions). One will be an interprimary
school competition held at 4pm on
Wednesday 25 th May in the college Hall. Each school
has been invited to send their two best spellers from
each of years 4, 5, 6, 7 and 8 and the winning school
will receive a trophy. Anyone is welcome to attend.
Refreshments will be on sale to raise funds for the
production.
The second spelling bee, which is still in the planning
stage, will be an inter-hapu event. The date will be
the same – 25 th May, at lunchtime. Students of all
Year levels are welcome to enter, and get points for
their hapu.
The production itself is primarily being staged by the
Year 12 and Year 13 Drama classes but there will be
opportunities for other students to participate.
Anyone who is interested should see Mr English.
The Information Hub
Amanda Fitzpatrick
The Hub had a brilliant term 1 with issuing books – I
recently read a heading in a paper “Do we need our
libraries?” I’m not sure what is happening in other
libraries but the reading numbers are climbing in The
Hub and have done for the past 6 years. We have had
a huge selection of DVD’s for the past 3 years along
with a pod of 20 computers. To date this year Fiction
and Non-Fiction books issued is well up on last year
with an increase of over 400. We are looking good for
increasing the 4000 books we issued last year with
already 1500 issued to date. I think the key is to make
a place that is “user friendly” and comfortable,
somewhere that attracts everyone. Once students
are comfortable they will read. Our Information Hub
is not the “normal” school library but is definitely
somewhere that teenagers and teachers feel
comfortable which equates to books being issued and
a very busy place.
Once again thanks to everyone who has donated old
magazines and news papers. They are always
accepted with open arms.
NCEA Results
We have had a number of queries from parents asking about NCEA results
which were published recently in the Waikato Times and New Zealand Herald.
NCEA results are usually worked out in one of two ways: by participation
rates or by the number of students on the school roll on 1 st July.
Participation rates are worked out by the percentage of students who are
entered in NCEA. While some schools have a practice of not allowing students
to sit NCEA, or withdrawing their credits if it was likely they were not going
to achieve NCEA, this is not the case at HPC; we encourage all of our students
to go for an NCEA qualification appropriate to their needs and interests. The
Board of Trustees in fact sets its NCEA targets each year based on the 1 st
July roll, in which all students at each year level are calculated in the
statistics. This does mean however, that if a student leaves HPC between 1 st
July and the end of the year, they are still calculated in our statistics even
though he or she is no longer at our school.
The graph shows both participation and July 1 st return roll based results for
Hauraki Plains College in 2010. The significant difference in the Level 3
results indicates the number of Year 13 students who, from mid-year, leave
school to continue their students at a tertiary institution or to take up an
apprenticeship or employment opportunity.
It was unfortunate that the NZ Herald left out HPC from their results, an
error which they have apologised for. The Waikato Times and NZ Herald
results indicated that the higher the decile (socio-economic status of the
community), the better schools tended to do in NCEA. Decile ratings go from
1 (low socio-economic) to 10 (high socio-economic) with HPC sitting at a decile
rating of 6. According to the Waikato Times, HPC was the top performing
Waikato school and if our results had been printed in the NZ Herald, we would
have been within the top five schools in the North Island, regardless of Decile
ranking.
Results can be viewed on www.nzqa.govt.nz
HAURAKI PLAINS COLLEGE
HOMEWORK GUIDELINES
NAG 1
RATIONALE:
Homework (Learning at home) complements and reinforces what is being learnt at
school. Regular homework develops students as self-managing and self-disciplined
learners.
PURPOSE:
To provide guidelines for student, teacher and parent expectations with regard to
Homework.
GUIDELINES:
1. Regular homework will be given for the following reasons:
• To reinforce what is being learnt in class
• For completion of class work
• To develop students as self managing learners
• To prepare for future learning
• To prepare for assessments
2. All students can expect regular and appropriate homework. Juniors can expect
around 2 – 3 hours per week increasing to a minimum of 5 hours for seniors.
Note: Homework may include working on assessment tasks.
3. Students are responsible for ensuring that homework is recorded in their
homework diary and is completed on time to a quality standard.
4. Teachers are responsible for giving homework which is regular, purposeful,
appropriate and clearly communicated according to the subject and level of
learning.
5. Teachers are required to regularly check, give feedback on homework and give
consequences of unsatisfactory completion and quality of homework.
6. Parents and caregivers are encouraged to take an interest in, ensure homework
is completed and sign off homework as required. Concerns
7. E-learning opportunities, such as KnowledgeNet, will be developed to assist
students with classroom work and learning at home.
8. Consequences for non-completion of homework include the Work Centre and
Daily monitors.
REVIEW:
These guidelines will be reviewed according to the Board of
Trustee’s triennial programme of self- review (2014).
Job Seekers: ‘Don’t Put Your Secrets on the
Net’
Confessions rashly made on MySpace or
Facebook can follow someone around for years.
Social networking sites such as MySpace and
Facebook could damage people’s careers as
prospective employers are increasingly using the
internet to vet job applicants.
Young jobseekers are being warned about
sharing intimate details, including boasting
about their drinking habits and party lifestyles,
because they could be viewed negatively by
potential employers.
See: www.nzherlad.co.nz – search “Job seekers
At the start of the year the NZQA fee of $75.00
was added to all senior students statements. We
have since been advised that this fee is $76.50.
This is taking into account the new GST rate that
was introduced in October last year. This being
the case, many statements now have an
outstanding balance of $1.50 after all other fees
have been paid.
If you have any queries please don’t hesitate to
Sports News from the HPC Sports Coordinator Cindy Berridge
E-mail sport@haurakiplains.school.nz
This term has started with a hiss and a roar as the winter codes are
either gearing up for their first competition games or now well
underway. The fields are up and running here at HPC with Rugby
and Soccer having 3 fields each. With our Netball Courts and
Hockey Turf just down the road we are very fortunate here on the
Hauraki Plains to have such excellent playing facilities.
As has been the case in the past couple of years, there has been a
marked increase in participation numbers. This year we have 5
Rugby, 7 Hockey, 4 Football and 12 Netball teams.
Congratulations to all students for getting stuck in and giving these
sports a go. It’s still not too late to get involved so if any students
wish to join a team then they must see the Sport and Recreation
Coordinator in the first instance. All the best to you all - we wish
you a successful season.
Please email sport@haurakiplains.school.nz or phone me 07
the newsletter and website.
Sports and Cultural Participation Code of Conduct
Recently we have updated our sports and cultural participation
code of conduct form which all students will be expected to sign
during river group time. This form outlines what is expected from
all individuals who represent Hauraki Plains College in sports or
cultural events. The main message is that sports and cultural
teams have the responsibility of role modelling the highest
standards of conduct in terms of behaviour, showing respect and
taking responsibility at all times. Of specific importance is:

Conduct and dress before and after games
Conduct and sportsmanship during games
Community and school involvement
Should a student’s behaviour or attendance be unsatisfactory at
school, the college may consider standing them down from sports
or other activities as an option. Students may be stood down from
participating in College Sports or Cultural Teams, competition
games and sports exchanges for one week to one month from the
time of the offence. This would be done only after consultation
and discussion with College staff and coaches and/or managers.
Even if students are not intending to participate in anything at this
stage these forms still need to be signed.
As you will see we have printed the ‘Code of Conduct for
Parent/Caregivers’ form for you to read. This is equally as
important and is necessary that everyone adheres to this for the
benefit of our students, our school and our community
9

Hauraki Plains College
Code of Conduct for Parents / Caregivers
At our school we agree to:
Encourage our young people to play hard but fair and be
good ambassadors for HPC.
Respect the decisions of coaches, managers and selectors.
They have the final call.
Show appreciation and support for volunteers who make it
happen – coaches, managers, umpires and referees
Role model appropriate behaviour on the sideline – no
alcohol, smoking, offensive language and put downs
Pay fees on time
Follow these steps if a problem arises:
- Discuss issue with team manager. If not resolved
- Discuss with teacher in charge and if still unhappy
- Raise issue with principal
“Miss is it going to rain?” There are a lot of things I
can do but control the weather I cannot! Having
said that someone was looking after us, the MX
track needed a little water to make it perfect for
riding and so we got it – kids were smiling, telling
me the track was “mint”.... phew!
With 177 riders turning up from as far as Kaitaia
and Wairoa I hoped the rain was going to stay
away. We managed to get in 2 rounds having to
call the final round off as the heavy rain meant the
smaller riders couldn’t get round.
Where to now.... another “dare to dream”
project is starting to rumble – I can’t tell you
what it is as I haven’t asked the team yet.....but
I know it will be a team effort and this team can
do anything!
Top three schools home were
1. Western Heights High School
2. Hauraki Plains College
3. Hamilton Boys High.
HPC trophy winners were:
1st girl home Abby Bull;
2nd Kent Morley (125cc 15-18yrs);
3rd Lucas Smyllie,
4th Kent Morley (250f 15-18yrs);
5th Michael Pou (Novice 125/250f),
Results can be found on www.mylaps.co.nz .
Yep the rain did come!!
The HPC MX team has hosted a very successful
tournament for the first time and now we have
something to build on. Broxy did an awesome job
of commentating on the day and without all our
very supportive families and sponsors we couldn’t
have done it.
All the riders were winners on the day with no
major injuries and I must say we looked smart in
our uniforms with silver tassels flying from the
helmets so everybody knew who we were and of
course it was perfect timing to “show off” our new
MX trailer which was put to good use.
I am truly encouraged to grow this sport at HPC.
We have kids with amazingly positive attitudes,
families who are committed to the team – I
couldn’t ask for anything more. TIC of this team is
easy and it is so rewarding – I love it!
Shooting
Hauraki Plains College hosted the Upper North
Island Clay Target Shooting competition last
month at the Thames Clay Target Club.
We had a great turn out of 143 shooters from
schools as far afield as Whangarei and Taupo.
Our girls team, consisting of Rachael van
Bysterveldt and Fiona Donladson , gained a good
second place in the girls team event. In the
Boys/Girls team event Gavin Wenham and
Rachel van Bysterveldt got an excellent first
placing. In the High Overall placings for the boys
Gavin Wenham gained a 3 rd place and Rachel
van Bysterveldt a first place for the girls. Well
done guys.
Term 2 Sports Exchanges
Term 2 is when the two sports exchanges
happen. The first one is where HPC will travel
to Te Kuiti on Thursday 26 th May. This will
involve the 1 st XV Rugby, Mixed ‘B’ Hockey,
Girls 1 st XI Football and possibly the Junior
Boys Football (to be confirmed), College A
Netball and Senior Boys Basketball. All
students who are members of these teams are
advised that they will be required to have full
HPC Number 1’s for this event. This includes
the blazer – some of these are available for
hire from the uniform shop. More details
regarding the itinerary, expectations of
students etc. will be distributed in the next
few days.
The second of the sports exchanges is on the
5th and 6th July where Mahurangi College will
be travelling here for an overnight stay. This
will involve 1 st XV Rugby, College A Netball,
both the Boys and Girls 1 st XI Hockey, the Girls
1 st XI Football, and both the Senior girls and
boys Basketball. Once again all students will
be required to be in full HPC Number 1
uniform for this visit, so it would definitely be
worthwhile getting this organised now.
Netball
Just a reminder that Netball Subs must be paid
by next Friday 13 May. These are $100 for all
team members except for members of College
A who have to pay $120.
It is most important that all girls wear the
correct uniform on the court and while
travelling to and from games – you are
representing Hauraki Plains College.
Basketball News
At the end of last term our 4 teams ventured
down to Rotorua to take part in the Western
Heights Tournament. We gained mixed results
with the Senior Girls placing 3 rd in the Premier
Grade, Snr Boys placing 3rd in their division,
Junior Girls winning their pool and placing 3 rd ,
and Junior boys placing 5 th in their division.
Unfortunately 4 of our Senior Boys were unable
to make the tournament due to the fact they
were representing the Thames Valley in the U17
Boys prems being held the same weekend! OPC
also dented our senior teams for the first couple
of games but this did not hinder our enthusiasm!
The weekend was highly successful from a
team/club building perspective and the students
are to be congratulated for their excellent
behaviour throughout the weekend. A big thanks
to those who came and helped on the weekend
and to those parents who drove down to support
us!
The Thames Valley League begins on Friday 6
May (all players will be given a draw for the
season) and we look forward to a successful
season.
A reminder that all junior players are to wear the
College tracksuit to and from all games and the
senior players are to wear Number Ones. Please
also remember the fees for 2011 are $70.00 and
must be paid prior to the 3 rd week of play.
Rugby News
The start of the rugby season has finally arrived.
All teams have been training hard to get
themselves prepared for their competitions.
Thanks to the tremendous effort from the
coaches, managers and players. I hope that the
season goes well for all teams. Go hard but play
fair.
Draw
Players should receive a draw for the season.
There is also a draw on the noticeboard for
players to find out.
Field Changes
There have been queries about home games
being played at other venues. This has been due
to the number of teams playing at the same
time, to ease the load of changing sheds and
playing fields the coaches have made these
decisions. With 3 rugby fields now operating, this
should not happen from here on.
If you have any further queries please contact
Matua Anderson at the college
Gold Coast
The Gold Coast tour is at the end of term. Players
and coaches have been working extremely hard
to try to fundraise money. Thanks to all the
support all of you who have contributed and
helped with this trip. Your support is much
appreciated.
Sponsors
Again thanks to the many people and trusts who
have helped with sponsorship this season. We
appreciate the time and the donations that you
have given to the running of our club. The
players and the management really appreciate
what you’ve done.
If you want to find out more about the rugby you
can look on the school website or the Thames
Valley Swamp Fox website.
If you have any queries please contact Matua or
the coaches concerned.
