close to areas of human habitation. Of these forest compartments, 63 and 75 also contain large
areas of forest of high value for biodiversity.

4.3 Zoning plan for D’Ran Watershed Protection Forest
The following characterize the zoning of D’Ran Watershed Protection Forest:
• Small, but significant areas of high value for biodiversity;
• Large areas of forest with high protection value;
• Areas of high landscape value
• High potential for obtaining payment for environmental services;
• Potential for exploitation of non-timber forest products
• Large areas of forest with importance to local communities
• High levels of overlap between zones with little conflict of interests.
Forest of high value for biodiversity: Map 25
Most of the Forest Management Unit is covered by coniferous forest dominated by Pinus
kesiya. The largest block of forest of high value for biodiversity is located in the centre-west
of D’Ran Watershed Protection Forest, adjacent to the border with Ninh Thuan Province,
almost exclusively within forest compartment 314 and 315. However, the small fragments of
forest of high value for biodiversity located elsewhere in this Forest Management Unit also
support species of conservation concern, both tree species such as Taxus wallaciania, birds
such as Grey-crowned Crocias and mammals such as Yellow-cheeked Crested Gibbon.
Forest of high landscape value: Map 26
The forest surrounding D’Ran Lake is designated as forest which protects existing and
proposed tourist sites. Although most of this forest is not zoned as forest of high value for
biodiversity, this zone does overlap with some fragments of forest of high value for
biodiversity.
Forest of high protection value: Map 27
D’Ran Watershed Protection Forest contains two large reservoirs, namely D’Ran Lake and
Don Duong Lake. It is therefore unsurprising that all forest compartments (with the exception
of 325B) are designated as forest which protects dams, reservoirs and other facilities of
national importance, and that these areas overlap with all other zones. There is relatively little
forest along rivers and streams which meets the criteria for forest of high protection value,
owing to the more gentle topography of this Forest Management Unit (compared with, for
instance, Bidoup Nui Ba National Park). However, there is a notable correlation between
remnant patches of forest with high value for biodiversity and the steep terrain that produces
streams which meet the criteria for forest of high protection value.
Forest of high direct use value: Map 28
Except for forest compartment 325B, all of the forest compartments of D’Ran Watershed
Protection Forest met the criteria for forest of high direct use value, under various sub-criteria.
Much of the forest surrounding the two lakes met the sub-criterion for forest which could
provide environmental services following Decision 380/QD-TTg dated 10 April 2008. There
is therefore overlap between this zone and areas zoned as forest of high value for biodiversity.
