Regul<strong>at</strong>ion 15: Specific measures for escala<strong>to</strong>rs<br />

<strong>and</strong> travela<strong>to</strong>rs<br />

15. An employer shall ensure th<strong>at</strong> escala<strong>to</strong>rs <strong>and</strong> travela<strong>to</strong>rs—<br />

(a) function safely,<br />

<strong>Work</strong>place<br />

(b) are equipped with any necessary safety devices, <strong>and</strong><br />

(c) are fitted with easily identifiable <strong>and</strong> accessible emergency<br />

shutdown devices.<br />

This Regul<strong>at</strong>ion places an oblig<strong>at</strong>ion on <strong>the</strong> employer <strong>to</strong> have in place suitable<br />

arrangements <strong>to</strong> deal with potential trapping risks.<br />

• <strong>Health</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>Safety</strong> Executive (UK), <strong>Safety</strong> in <strong>the</strong> use of escala<strong>to</strong>rs.<br />

Regul<strong>at</strong>ion 16: Loading bays <strong>and</strong> ramps<br />

16. An employer shall ensure th<strong>at</strong>—<br />

(a) loading bays <strong>and</strong> ramps are suitable for <strong>the</strong> dimensions of <strong>the</strong> loads<br />

<strong>to</strong> be transported,<br />

(b) loading ramps are, as far as possible, safe enough <strong>to</strong> prevent<br />

employees from falling off,<br />

Loading bays <strong>and</strong> ramps must be adequ<strong>at</strong>e <strong>to</strong> c<strong>at</strong>er for <strong>the</strong> size, shape <strong>and</strong> weight of<br />

<strong>the</strong> goods being loaded or unloaded <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> amount of traffic using <strong>the</strong>m.<br />

If necessary, <strong>to</strong> reduce <strong>the</strong> risk of employees falling or driving off ramps, guard<br />

rails should be provided. This will depend on <strong>the</strong> degree of gradient, <strong>the</strong> width of<br />

<strong>the</strong> ramp, <strong>the</strong> number <strong>and</strong> type of vehicles or <strong>the</strong> number of employees (or both)<br />

using <strong>the</strong> ramp. Guarding may not be essential where <strong>the</strong> <strong>to</strong>tal difference in levels<br />

is 600 mm or less.<br />

(c) loading bays have <strong>at</strong> least one exit point, <strong>and</strong><br />
