PENSIONS Canada Pension Plan (CPP) The Canada Pension Plan (CPP) was established in 1966 by the Federal Government and provides retirement pension and other benefits for those people who have contributed to the plan through paid employment in Canada. Payment to the plan is compulsory. To receive any benefit under CPP an application must be made. CPP Retirement Pension The CPP Retirement pension is a monthly payment to people who have contributed to the Canada Pension Plan. The amount of your CPP benefit is determined by the contributions you made during the time you were employed. CPP benefits normally are payable the month after your 65 th birthday however you may choose to begin as early as age 60 if you have substantially or completely stopped working (contact Service Canada for details). The amount of the benefit payable will be reduced by .5% per month (6% per year) if you take it before age 65 and increased by .57% per month if you choose to claim your pension after age 65. From 2011 to 2013, the Government of Canada will gradually increase this percentage from 0.5% per month (6%) to 0.7% per month (8.4% per year). Contact Service Canada for details. CPP Disability Benefit The Canada Pension Plan Disability benefit is available to people whose disability prevents them from working on a regular basis. To receive a CPP Disability pension you must apply, be under the age 65, made enough contributions to the plan (at least in the last 6 years or paid into the CPP for at least 25 years and made valid 7
