Micro Hybrid and micro mild hybrid
Focus on European market:
Cities infrastructure is the perfect place for
micro-hybrid architecture and cost of micro
hybrid electrification is acceptable for European
consumers
Based on annual
sales in M units
• Micro-hybrid market is already present, especially in Europe where it makes sense regarding the
complexity of urban driving.
• We expect micro-mild to appear more clearly between 2012 and 2013, time where ultracapacitors
will be more cost-effective.
Power electronics uses in HEV/EV
HEV power application
DC/AC inverter + DC/DC booster option (full hybrid, plug-in, EV)
• Description:
© 2011 • 8
– DC/AC Inverter: Generates a 3-phase AC signal from the high voltage battery DC current
(200/400Vdc) to actuate the electric motor. The inverter is bi-directional.
– DC/DC booster option: boosts the battery DC current (200/400Vdc) to provide higher voltage
(600/650V) to the inverter. The converter is bi-directional. The booster is integrated in the
same packaging as the inverter (Toyota Prius configuration). The booster allows the
reduction of the overall power train cost.
– Total average price: $1,500
• Power electronics general characteristics
– DC/AC Inverter:
• 400 – 650VAC
• Power: 20 to 100 kW. Average power: 50 kW
• Water cooled with a dedicated cooling circuit
• Devices: IGBT + diodes next Gen: GaN/SiC diodes
and switches
– DC/DC booster: used by Toyota and its licensees (Ford, Nissan)
• Power: 20 – 70 kW
• Water cooling
• Devices: IGBT + diodes
– Power module average price / car: $500
• Suppliers:
– Toyota, Delphi, Continental , Bosch, Denso, Hitachi…
Devices roadmap for Full/Plug-in Hybrid
and EV
Si
• We believe that the 1200V and 1700V will be more and more used in EV and HEV. It will open
opportunities for SiC devices. We believe GaN will have more difficulties in being used in powertrains,
but it will probably take market shares in chargers.
• The need for high efficiency, smaller and lighter converters will push for wide band gap semiconductor.
