Tips for Dealing with Victims <strong>and</strong><br />
Survivors<br />
One of the toughest decisions for journalists is how to cover victims, survivors,<br />
<strong>and</strong> eyewitnesses to catastrophic events.<br />
When crisis strikes, ordinary people find themselves thrust into the media<br />
spotlight during one of the most difficult times of their lives. They may be in shock<br />
or grieving; they may be waiting to hear about the fate of a loved one. Suddenly,<br />
cameras, microphones <strong>and</strong> tape recorders are being thrust at them.<br />
On the other side of the equation, journalists have the responsibility to tell the<br />
story <strong>and</strong> help the public underst<strong>and</strong> the tragic event. How do we balance truth<br />
telling with minimizing harm to vulnerable people?<br />
