Southampton Maritime: 08575, 66416/516/565 Bournemouth-Weymouth & return: 444005/06/10/11/15/17/33/34/36/41/42/44 24 th March: Winchester-Waterloo: 66174, 159013, 444018/36/38/44, 450014/019 450020/037/075/077/105/117, 455733/808/863 450866/870/873/911 Rail Tour News THE WANSBECK - Sat. 30 th March 2013 by Ray Smith: This rail tour was operated in top & tail mode by K4 2-6-0 61994 ‘The Great Marquess’ and K1 2-6-0 62005 (both tenders facing the coaches), running as 1Z62 Newcastle - North Blyth, 1Z64 North Blyth - Crag Hall, 1Z66 Crag Hall - Saltburn and 1Z68 Saltburn - Newcastle. 61994 leading at Marcheys House Junction at 11.47 (aka Sleekburn Triangle) With 61994 leading to start with, after North Blyth the train turned on the Marcheys House Junction known as Sleekburn triangle and once again 62005 was leading. With the North Sea and offshore wind turbines in the background, 62005 waits to return back to Newcastle, then on to Saltburn at 12.22 from North Blyth 52F, North and South Blyth had an allocation of K1s in the 1960s. I have a 52K, Consett shedplate that was given to me by a fitter when 62022 was transferred to Blyth! 22
Preservation Galas Keighley and Worth Valley Steam Gala – 3 rd Mar 2013 by Andrew Woodcock: I decided to go to the gala on the Sunday along with my visit to the Halifax High Level Railway (see separate report). The line up seemed good but not spectacular with residents BR Std 2-6-4T 80002 (last gala appearance before overhaul) recently overhauled WD 2-8-0 90733. 0-6-0 LYR 1300 (departing after gala), 4F 0-6-0 43924 and visitor BR Std 2-6-0 78019. 0-6-0T 1704 ’Nunlow’ was used on the Ingrow shuttles. It was intended that 90733 be used on limited diagrams and spending the rest of its time in Ingrow Goods Yard on display. However on my arrival I found out that for Sunday the roles of 80002 and 90733 were reversed. This suited me ideally and I took the shuttle with ’Nunlow’ from Ingrow to Keighley returning to my delight with 78019 piloting 90733. My brief visit concluded with a visit to the Vintage Carriage Trust depot and a look at Haworth Yard. At Haworth, WC 4-6-2 34092 ‘City of Wells’ was outside the back of the warehouse in use for an engineering demonstration. At the other end, stock had moved around. The Hunslet shunter was in the road at the shed side of the warehouse behind the LYR Barton Wright Saddle Tank frame etc. A short but enjoyable visit NNR Spring Steam Gala – 8-10 th Mar 2013 by Stuart Moore: The North Norfolk Railway (NNR) ran their first steam gala of 2013 and I visited on Saturday the 9 th . It was planned to be a Standards Gala using several Standard class steam loco's including both 70000 ‘Britannia’ and 70013 ‘Oliver Cromwell’. Unfortunately the railway suffered a number of setbacks and by the time of the event it was not just standards, with Epping and Ongar Railway's Prairie 4141 and Ian Riley’s Black 5 45407 also attending for the first weekend. The NNR's fortunes got no better with the gala suffering very bad weather and also the loss of 2MT 78019 and also 70000 due to a shunting incident on the Saturday. In the end a number of other engines from the NNR were also used. Not unsurprisingly the timetable on the Saturday was all over the place. However, despite these issues the railway still managed to run a good event and the poor weather created some very atmospheric conditions. Hopefully the Railway’s other special events later in the year, including the second gala on the 16-17 th March and the diesel gala on the 14-16 th June will be more successful for the railway. 92203 ‘Black Prince’ at Sheringham, note the signal box, formerly on Platform 2 has been moved closer to the level crossing, which I understand is roughly where is used to be 23
