Society Notice Board
Give a chap a toy and...!! No sooner had Carl
received our 40th Anniversary headboard than it
was stuck on anything that moves in Eastleigh
Works (well most were stationary at the time).
The headboard is seen on 07007 on the 14 th
March (a close up of the headboard is seen
below).A few of the locos in Eastleigh Works
Report can also be seen suitably adorned, but
having pride of place below is 47790 ‘Galloway
Princess’ (photo taken by Carl on 2 nd April)
which in its original guise was D1973, a fitting
follow up to D2013 (on the cover last month).
Still waiting for an original photo of D1973 ?
Belonging to ICRS tells us you have an interest in vehicles involved in travel, whether it is to do with
their design or simply number-crunching. That being the case, have you also got an interest in buses
in the UK ? GBBG may already be known to you from its link with ICRS in the past, but if you haven’t
thought about joining us before, why not reconsider? Our annual membership subscription has now
been reduced to a modest £13.60, so why not visit our website www.gb-bg.co.uk or write to our
Secretary, Hazel Roberts, at 37 Abbey Place, Crewe CW1 4JR for further information? It could well be
of benefit to you as a fellow transport enthusiast.
General: On the 5 th March a lorry
demolished about 20ft of the wall on the
bridge over the line at Campbell Road.
The debris fell beside the up line and all
traffic was halted for a while to allow
Network Rail to inspect. Once checked, a
speed restriction was placed on both up
and down lines to ensure that vibrations
didn’t bring down any more of the wall.
Locos:
73204 departed the Works on the 5 th for
Southampton Docks and then via lorry to
Brush Traction at Loughborough for
conversion to 73902. It is seen passing
the damaged wall (right).
Preservation News
Bluebell Railway, East Grinstead Opening Festival by Mark Richards:
To celebrate the official opening of the northern extension to East Grinstead a two week special
programme of events was to be held from 23 rd March until 7 th April. I decided to attend the opening
day, unfortunately the weather was less than kind with frequent snow showers in the morning and all
day accompanied by a bitter chill in the air.
The line to East Grinstead was
officially closed on 17 th March
1955 so the reopening of
services through to Sheffield
Park came almost 55 years to
the day since closure. There
were seven locos in steam on the
opening day with four sets of
ordinary passenger stock in
addition to the Pullman set which
worked a special ‘Grinsteade
Belle’ from Sheffield Park
departing 09.30 arriving East
Grinstead at 10.11. This service
was hauled by Southern Railway
Maunsell U 2-6-0 1638 which is
seen later in the day running
round its train at East Grinstead.
The other locos in use on this
first day were BR Std 9F 2-10-0
92212, SER H 0-4-4T 263, P 0-6-
0Ts 323 ‘Bluebell’ and 178 (seen
double headed at East Grinstead
below) and LBSCR E4 0-6-2T
473 ‘Birch Grove’.
LBSCR A1 ‘Terrier’ 55 ‘Stepney’ was working brake van shuttles from Horsted Keynes up the Ardingly
branch.
The rolling stock in use was a range
of vintages. The most historic and
notable were the Metropolitan Railway
compartment stock recently used on
the London Underground 150
celebrations paired with SER, LBSCR
and LCDR compartment stock. The
other coaching sets were formed of
mainly BR and Southern Railway
stock along with LNW and GNR
Observation Cars (which were
available to travel in at a supplement).
92212 was booked to haul a special
‘Imberhorne Limited’ excursion from
Sheffield Park to East Grinstead (with
two return trips) in the evening using
the Pullman stock.
10
The ticket office is housed in temporary accommodation (see above) but it is assumed that more
permanent facilities will be made available in due course. The access and position of the Bluebell
Railway station in relation to the mainline station (recently refurbished) can also be seen in the photo
above. Passengers have to walk about 100m along the Sainsbury access road (extreme right) and
then there is another 50m walk from the gate to the Bluebell platform past the shunting neck.
The facilities at East Grinstead have been enhanced with
toilets on site along with the East Grinsteade shop and
buffet housed in Mk1 ex-BSK 35419 (977166). This has
been placed alongside the shunting neck previously
viewable from the access road
(see report in Nov 2010 issue, page 16)
Memoirs of a Railman
by Jim Fitch
Jim’s final railway memoirs are as a schoolboy from 1937 up to the start of his railway career in 1953
and the subject of his first article (January 2009).
I was born in London just a couple of months before the Coronation of King George VI in May 1937.
By the time I was 3 years old I had been evacuated from the capital to a village (then) Wigston Magna
just outside Leicester while my parents remained in London on wartime occupations.
My first memory of a railway engine is standing by the fence on the side of Wigston yards and seeing
ex-LNWR 0-8-0s working the goods trains while in the distance a tantalising glimpse of expresses
rushing by. In those days on your 5 th birthday you started school, so now I was walking to the village
school. I was also allowed to walk down the main road to the road overbridge at Wigston Station. Most
days there was a group of enthusiasts there and my railway education began. Soon I had a
vocabulary of Jubs, 8Fs and wouldn't it be great if a ‘streak’ (A4) came through.
During the war Wigston yards and junctions were crucial to the war effort as the cross country lines
meant that trains could travel North, East, South and West. Then in 1944, great excitement as
American engines appeared on the scene. These of course were the American army loco's being
brought over here for transhipment to the continent after D-Day. Apart from the look of the engine,
what intrigued us boys was their painted numbers were all straight lines and no curves.
In 1945, as war gradually came to an end I returned to London to live with my father and grandmother.
Having been bombed out of Paddington we now lived in Acton which turned out to be a treasure
house of railways. We lived close to Acton yards, so we could hear the wagons being shunted day and
night. Now I saw my first Great Western engines and after that the Midland was only my second
favourite railway. My school bordered the North London line so sometimes during the dinner hour we
would see a steam train in between the electrics. My fondest memory though is when I walked to and
from school, I walked over a road overbridge and I often saw an 0-6-0 ‘Charlie’ (Q1) pulling a heavy
goods train which was a picture of power and as steam often covered the stark lines of the loco, it did
not look as ugly as usual. Back at Acton yard it was also possible to see LNER tanks going up the
bank to join the North London line. With Willesden Junction just a bike ride away it was as good a
place to live as any.
During 1947 I kept hearing about nationalisation. Eventually I found out this meant that all the railway
companies were to be merged into one British Railways. Being now ten years old I could discuss with
the various groups of supporters at various locations, which railway was the best. When the
locomotive exchanges were announced everyone rubbed their hands with glee, each person
convinced their favourite company would show all the others up. In the event what was proven was
that each company had designed loco's suitable for what they required and overall there was not
much to choose between them. As I found out in later years, R A Riddles the new CME of BR was well
aware of this fact. He had been responsible during the war for the WD loco's and had been assisted
by engineers from all of the big four companies. From this experience he realised that basically
everyone was the same technically with only details differing depending on regional factors. As a
publicity stunt for the newly formed BR it was a great success arousing great interest around the
country.
More exciting for us spotters were the new liveries with familiar express engines appearing in blue.
The only engine I remember in blue was a King and I must admit it looked smart. However the
experiment was short lived and soon the green was back. In time many of the tank engines that
worked passenger trains were changed from black to green.
Meanwhile things stayed much the same. Former company designs such as Castles, Coronations and
A1s were still being built. A family sight in Acton yard would be a ‘dukedog’, known by us as ’sister
dukes’. There was still other outside frame 4-4-0s working all over the western. One day I was
12
extremely lucky. Spending a day on the footbridge at Southall we saw a ‘bulldog’ at speed on the main
line. With a head-on view a sight that must have been familiar in the first years of the 20 th century with
‘City of Truro’ and her sisters on the GWR expresses, the bulldog roared underneath us, her cranks
whizzing round with the wheels hidden.
About this time I travelled on my first spotter’s trip, an Ian Allan loco spotters club trip to Swindon
Works. Along the way somewhere between Reading and Swindon we passed a long row of 2-8-0
Austerity locos returned from Europe and awaiting overhaul before entering service with BR. Swindon
factory of course was magic, little did I realise then that in five years later I would be an apprentice
there.
As we entered the 1950s and I got older, life got better. The first standard locos rolled out nicknamed
‘doodlebugs’, the Britannias were the first on the scene and Liverpool St Station was a must. By now
cycling was a great interest and so every weekend we were out on our bikes. Sundays was usually a
local run one week to Old Oak Common, Willesden, Cricklewood and Kentish Town sheds. The next
week it would be a country run to a shed such as Guildford, Tonbridge or Feltham or Hitchin.
Sometimes it would be across London to Devons Road and East Ham. On a Saturday it might be a
tour of the termini or spending the day on one of the stations.
The first express line diesels were also making their debut 10000/10001 on the Euston mainline, the
gas turbines 18000/18100 on the Western then the Southern with 10200/10201/10202. Sometimes
10000 + 10001 worked as a pair. An unusual loco was 10100 which was a Fell diesel mechanical
express loco which also operated on the Midland.
When I was 15, King George VI died. We found out that the funeral train from Paddington to Windsor
would travel through Acton during the school dinner hour. Everyone knew ‘Windsor Castle’ was the
Royal engine and would be gleaming that day. A few days before the funeral the word went round
among enthusiasts that ‘Windsor Castle’ is not the real one. The day of the funeral and as soon as the
bell went at midday, we were on our bikes pedalling like mad. Sure enough as the funeral train passed
as we stood at the lineside, it was obvious that the Castle was a post war engine. Later the story came
out. The King died suddenly and 4082 was stripped to the frames at Swindon on a general overhaul.
What we will never know is when they exchanged name and number plates with an ex-work Castle
7013 ‘Bristol Castle’. Did they realise that it was a different series of Castle with a different front end
and mechanical lubricators or did they say so what!
The following year, 1953 was Coronation year and London saw many specials arrive for the public
holiday on Coronation day. So it was on my bike to tour some sheds. I had heard ‘Silver Jubilee’ was
on Willesden shed and sure enough there she was. Now I saw for myself those silver metal numbers
instead of the usual painted numbers on the cab sides. I was disappointed that instead of making two
extra 4's to renumber its LMS number into its BR, it was just painted on, completely spoiling the effect.
Still it was a great cop as in all my travels I never saw her again.
So that summer I left school and started my apprenticeship at Swindon. Now my spotting really took
off. In the following years I travelled hundreds of miles and visited the majority of engine sheds the UK.
Many pleasant memories and experiences, some now gone forever like the Liverpool Overhead
Railway and the Mumbles Railway at Swansea, some preserved and others still going strong. In many
ways however, today is a great improvement with speeds and journey times unthinkable in the 1950s.
There is still a variety still of locos and rolling stock with a lot more livery variation since privatisation.
Here's hoping I see much more as it looks exciting times ahead.
Continuing the NSE livery story, the only mainline AC electric locomotive to be painted was Cl.86
86401 ‘Northampton Town’. Owned by the AC Locomotive Group, it is currently stored at Willesden
TMD, its future in doubt. It was named ‘Northampton Town’ from 13 th May 1989 until November 1991.
It was re-named ‘Hertfordshire Rail Tours’ on 15 th October 1998. Following withdrawal at the end of
2002 the plates were removed in July 1993. Following repainting into original NSE livery from EWS
maroon/gold it was re-dedicated ‘Northampton Town’ on the 10 th September 2005 at the Crewe Works
Open Day, in which condition it remains to date. In the photo below, 86401 is seen at Worcester Depot
on the 16 th September 2009 (photo by Colin Mytton).
Then & Now 1973 – 2013
This series aims to show locos as they were in 1973 and as they are now in 2013. Typically for the first
loco (photo provided by James Holloway of D3956) I didn’t have an up to date photo though nothing
has changed since 2008. If anyone has a good 1973 photo they wish to feature please let me know. If
you haven’t got a current one I will find one...hopefully.
then - D3956 Tyseley Depot, 24 th June 1973, now - 08788 Inverness Depot, 11 th December 2008
Rail Tour News
THE WANSBECK - Sat. 30 th March 2013 by Ray Smith:
This rail tour was operated in
top & tail mode by K4 2-6-0
61994 ‘The Great Marquess’
and K1 2-6-0 62005 (both
tenders facing the coaches),
running as 1Z62 Newcastle -
North Blyth, 1Z64 North Blyth -
Crag Hall, 1Z66 Crag Hall -
Saltburn and 1Z68 Saltburn -
Newcastle.
61994 leading at Marcheys House Junction at 11.47
(aka Sleekburn Triangle)
With 61994 leading to start
with, after North Blyth the train
turned on the Marcheys House
Junction known as Sleekburn
triangle and once again 62005
was leading.
With the North Sea and offshore wind turbines
in the background, 62005 waits to return
back to Newcastle, then on to Saltburn
at 12.22 from North Blyth
52F, North and South Blyth had an allocation of K1s in the 1960s. I have a 52K, Consett shedplate
that was given to me by a fitter when 62022 was transferred to Blyth!
Preservation Galas
Keighley and Worth Valley Steam Gala – 3 rd Mar 2013 by Andrew Woodcock:
I decided to go to the gala on the Sunday along with my visit to the Halifax High Level Railway (see
separate report). The line up seemed good but not spectacular with residents BR Std 2-6-4T 80002
(last gala appearance before overhaul) recently overhauled WD 2-8-0 90733. 0-6-0 LYR 1300
(departing after gala), 4F 0-6-0 43924 and visitor BR Std 2-6-0 78019. 0-6-0T 1704 ’Nunlow’ was used
on the Ingrow shuttles.
It was intended that 90733 be used on limited diagrams and spending the rest of its time in Ingrow
Goods Yard on display. However on my arrival I found out that for Sunday the roles of 80002 and
90733 were reversed. This suited me ideally and I took the shuttle with ’Nunlow’ from Ingrow to
Keighley returning to my delight with 78019 piloting 90733.
My brief visit concluded with a visit to the Vintage Carriage Trust depot and a look at Haworth Yard. At
Haworth, WC 4-6-2 34092 ‘City of Wells’ was outside the back of the warehouse in use for an
engineering demonstration. At the other end, stock had moved around. The Hunslet shunter was in
the road at the shed side of the warehouse behind the LYR Barton Wright Saddle Tank frame etc.
A short but enjoyable visit
NNR Spring Steam Gala – 8-10 th Mar 2013 by Stuart Moore:
The North Norfolk Railway (NNR) ran their first steam gala of 2013 and I visited on Saturday the 9 th .
It was planned to be a Standards
Gala using several Standard class
steam loco's including both 70000
‘Britannia’ and 70013 ‘Oliver
Cromwell’. Unfortunately the
railway suffered a number of
setbacks and by the time of the
event it was not just standards, with
Epping and Ongar Railway's Prairie
4141 and Ian Riley’s Black 5 45407
also attending for the first weekend.
The NNR's fortunes got no better
with the gala suffering very bad
weather and also the loss of 2MT
78019 and also 70000 due to a
shunting incident on the Saturday.
In the end a number of other
engines from the NNR were also
used. Not unsurprisingly the
timetable on the Saturday was all
over the place. However, despite
these issues the railway still
managed to run a good event and
the poor weather created some
very atmospheric conditions.
Hopefully the Railway’s other
special events later in the year,
including the second gala on the
16-17 th March and the diesel gala
on the 14-16 th June will be more
successful for the railway.
Preservation Infrastructure News
Keith & Dufftown Railway (KDR):
During the latter half of 2012, the unused two road shed formerly located near Drummuir Station has
been moved up to the southern end of the line at Dufftown. Currently served by only by the platform
track, it has at least enabled covered accommodation over the winter to re-paint two of the five
resident Cl.108 DMUs, 50628 and 56224 (the latter was formerly rail blue). These two have started the
season as the service train (along with 51568 these have small destination roof boxes).
A third Cl.108, 52053 is inside the shed awaiting its turn for the paint brush. Unfortunately it is not long
enough to accommodate a 2 car unit but funds are being raised to construct a second track which will
stop stock parked alongside the station platform having to be shunted out of the way. The top photo
shows the end of the line beyond the shed on which a point will be installed to form a shunting neck.
The line originally continued to Craigellachie. The track on the right is actually a public footpath which
runs along the platform and out to the adjacent road by the station. The second photo below, taken
Easter Monday shows the approach to the shed with 56491 alongside the platform (both 56491 &
52053 have large roof headcode boxes). There is another public footpath across the track at the
platform end just visible in front of 56491.
Bluebell Railway (BBR):
To help with the remaining spoil removal BBR has hired in 33103 ‘Swordfish’. Though BBR has a
Cl.08 and has previously hired a Cl.73, this is the first time a mainline diesel has been used on the
staunchly all steam line. Here it is at Horsted Keynes on the 25 th March as seen by David Elliott.
by Nigel Hoskins
The following sightings are mostly from Gloucester Station, but also include workings on the avoiding
line southeast of the station between Barnwood and Gloucester Yard Junctions. Only freight and
notable loco hauled workings are shown with the diagram code, time (if known) plus origin and
destination (see location codes).
WAGON UPDATES by Trevor Roots:
this spot every month. The 2013 edition has not only been updated but has been re-organised to be
more user friendly and incorporate stored wagons where known. As this latter attempt is anything but
exhaustive we rely on member sightings to help. Please let Trevor know, contact details on page 2, if
you have any amendments or wish pass on any other helpful wagon information.
India – Second Hill Railway:
February 22 nd 2012: An early departure to the airport for a flight to Bagdogra, where we continued by
road to Siliguri. After a quick lunch we went to Siliguri Junction on the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway,
our second Hill Railway. This 2 ft gauge railway runs from New Jalpaiguri at the southern end up to
Darjeeling in the north, a distance of 88 Kms. Our planned itinerary was to travel the whole line, but
nature intervened! The line (and road) was swept away by 2 major landslides severing the line, one in
June 2010 and the other in September 2011.
New Jalpaiguri was less than an hour’s ride south of Siliguri Junction and since the landslides that part
of the line was closed. However, Ffestiniog had arranged a private steam hauled charter to take us
there. Siliguri Junction station is also part of the national network, as is New Jalpaiguri and the DHR
runs almost parallel with it. Our special was to depart from Siliguri Junction but most of us went to the
depot where the train was being prepared. The depot contained 2 diesels and 5 steam locomotives
which are classified as 0-4-0 B class, Saddle Well Tanks with ‘Hawkeye’, ‘Wanderer’, ‘Soldat’ and
‘Victor’ being some of their names. Many of us joined our train at the depot, riding rare track to the
station. Our locomotive was 788 ‘Tusker’.
let’s see how many people we can get onto
When we departed we were the first train for a long time to use these tracks. It was amazing seeing
the reaction of the locals who had adopted this closed line for their own use with stalls set up on it and
some were even sleeping on it. No stalls or sleepers were damaged or injured. At New Jalpaiguri
there was an assortment of the national systems diesel and electric locomotives to be seen. We
returned to our hotel by coach.
February 23 rd 2012: Another quick visit to the shed where another diesel, not seen yesterday had
arrived. This time we travelled north as far as Chundbhati, and our locomotive was 802 ‘Victor’. The
destination was Tindharia workshops, now was cut off from the rest of the system due to the
landslides. Some jeeps had been hired by Ffestiniog to run alongside the train so we could use them
to photograph the train on route. We had to transfer to these jeeps to get to the workshops. Outside
the works buildings was 787, quite dead and inside, on sleepers, 1001, which had been there a long
time. Directly below the workshops was one of the landslides. The land that supported the road and
the railway had all disappeared! The railway was still there, floating in mid air like a suspension bridge
with no handrails (where the rails dip out of view on photo below). The locals were still using it as a
bridge! The parts of the road left had massive cracks. No way was I going to take a closer look! I
cannot imagine how this breach can be repaired.
34
We continued, by road to our overnight stop at Kurseong, where on entering the town, one shunter
and one B class were noted on the depot.
The second landslip was en route so a quick stop to look at where a road and railway once hugged
the contours. Only what appeared to be the side of a mountain was left. A massive rock was being
attacked by one man with a pneumatic drill trying to clear the route (visible above the digger in photo
below). I think this will take some time!
our train locomotive for the day is 802 ‘Victor’
awaiting departure from Siliguri Junction
and later (right) taking on water
23 rd February 2012
We returned by the jeeps to Tindharia station where a Bollywood movie was being filmed and 2 of the
B class were being used.
February 24 th 2012: Now for the final leg to Darjeeling heading first back into Kurseong station with
plenty of time to look at the railway running up the middle of the bazaar. The shed now contained 3
steam locomotives, one which was dismantled. This time our haul was un-named 795. As we slowly
passed through the bazaar it was amazing how little space there was between the train and the
buildings.
Passing Ghum there was a small museum which we were to visit later.
Just before arriving in Darjeeling the train
stopped as some slightly silly person
parked his car alongside the line (see
photo left). It was not long before a crowd
built up and all wanting to help started
bouncing the car away from the track
only for it to end up almost on it. At that
moment a very embarrassed owner
arrived and drove off as fast as he could.
I have no idea what damage the car
sustained whilst being bounced!
....probably less than their normal driving,
ed.
February 26 th 2012: A very early start! We were to go to Tiger Tops, a high vantage point. We were
told that at sunrise on a clear day you could see the Himalayas and Everest. We arrived there and it
was still dark and freezing. It was not a clear morning and we did not see Everest.
After returning to the hotel to thaw out and have
breakfast we returned to the station for a return
trip to Ghum, aka Ghoom to visit the museum.
This time hauled by 1889 built 782, ‘Mountainer’.
Most of the station at Ghum was cordoned off
because another Bollywood production was
being filmed. We did see the steam Baby Sivok
plinthed there.
February 27 th 2012: An early departure for the
long road journey back to Bagdogra airport for
the flight to Chennai (Madras). Originally via
Calcutta but tight timings meant it was via Delhi
(again) with a late arrival at the hotel.
February 28 th 2012: A quick sightseeing tour of Chennai, including a visit to the beach that was under
1 metre of water when the last Tsunami struck, then off to the station for the 8½ hour train journey to
Coimbatore. Once again this was a 22 coach train so I embarked on the long trek to front of the train
to see what the haul was. It was a class WAP-4, Co-Co electric No 22543. This was a wonderful
journey, the same style coaches as earlier, comfortable enough, yet only a decent view from my own
side. I was at the end of my coach next to the vestibule. This is where I spent most of the journey.
There was a pull down seat which I claimed although more time was spent sitting on the floor with
both doors open, with a nice draught and decent views. Leaving Chennai, there was a depot to the
right. I managed to get a few numbers then off we went. The whole journey was interesting. Many of
the stations we stopped at had a selection of locomotives scattered about. The food monitor regularly
wandered up and down the train supplying food and soft drinks (alcohol is banned on Indian trains). I
cannot recall how many colas and oranges I had. It was very hot, yet considering the temperatures at
home I was not complaining!
As dusk arrived we stopped at Salem Junction for a while. It is a busy station but I was in the centre of
the train so I could not see much. Our locomotive came off here and ran down the side of the train. I
have no idea what replaced it. On arrival at Coimbatore Junction it was dark and we headed to the
coach to take us to our hotel. Being late I only had time for a meal and beer then it was bed time.
ICRS Publications
Our 3 main books are now out, with UK Pocket Book
following UK Wagons and UK Combine. However the
latter two are close to selling out and rather than reprint, no
more will be available until the release of new Summer
Editions in a couple of months. Releasing a Summer
Edition of the Wagon Book will be the first time this has
occurred.
The other exciting news is that after 4 years, Ultimate
Sighting File is to be released in the summer as part of our
40 th Anniversary celebrations. It will be in two parts (see
below) as opposed to the former three parts. The price will
be similar to before at around £25 in total.
Of our other smaller books, Irish Railways is to be
released as a 2013 edition in the summer and re-numbered
UKRS09, but the Name Directory will not be updated until
2014. Due to poor sales none of the individual books, UK
Locomotives, Diesel Units and Electric Units will be
produced in 2013.
Books can be ordered online via PayPal at
www.icrs.org.uk or by post from Carl Watson, ICRS
