ICS’s Harvest = Healthy Kids
The school year is now in full swing and our students have been busying doing homework, and keeping up with the
many activities in their lives, we wanted to take time to highlight special events in the Food Service Department.
Locally Grown Foods: One of the goals of the ICS Food Service Department for the past years has been to bring
locally grown foods into our school. We continue to achieve that goal by purchasing a variety of produce from
Growing Power such as spring mix, carrots and other seasonally available items. Growing Power is nationally known
for its effort to bring fresh food to urban areas and it is located here in Milwaukee. We have also begun a new
purchasing relationship with Sweet Water Organics, which provides us with sprouts and lettuce. So far this year our
students have tried a variety of fruits and vegetables from purple peppers to jicama to freshly made guacamole.
When it comes to local, it does not get closer than our ICS School Garden! Our fourth grade classes have been
working hard in harvesting the fruits of the labor put in over the spring, summer and fall. Students have harvested
butternut squash, which was served in our in-school Fall Feast in the 3-sister salad. Another successful crop was kale,
which was very well received by the students during our lunch hour last week Friday. See picture!
Our Students are No. 1: Overall, as our nation struggles with rising rates of diet-related illnesses, it is critical that we
maintain support for ICS’s school meal programs, which promote healthier lifestyles for our children. Our school
lunch program has your children, our students, at the core of its mission to promote a healthy life. We encourage
parents to learn about the various options we have available such as nutritious breakfast, healthy lunch and 3x per week
a great afternoon snack of fruits or veggies. Please continue to support these healthier choices by encouraging students
to try the variety of fruits and vegetables offered at school.
Thank you for your cooperation,
