Dear ICS Parents,
Research proves breakfast really is the most important meal of the day
and students at the Indian Community School of Milwaukee are being
reminded to make time for the morning meal.
Eating breakfast helps children focus on learning and stay alert in the
classroom. Studies show that eating breakfast provides important
energy and nutrients for children to get through their morning activities.
Research has also demonstrated that breakfast improves
problem-solving abilities and short-term memory skills needed
throughout the school day.
The Indian Community School servers free breakfast from
7:15AM-8:15AM Monday through Friday in the Hall of Nations. So,
fuel up with a healthy school breakfast every morning.

clothing that your child has out grown and no
longer needs? Please consider donating them to
another child in need.
We are collecting gently used winter clothing such
as coats, boots, mittens and snow pants that
families may no longer need. (No hats or scarves
please)
Items donated will be given to families in the
community who may need assistance obtaining
these items for their children.
If they are in need of cleaning we will take care of
this.
Items may be dropped off at the Indian Community
School Family Resource Center. If you require
alternative forms of getting these items to us please
call the Family Resource Center at

2010-2011 Parent Student Handbook. This is being done so we all can support and work together
in a partner relationship.

SPOTLIGHT
ICS ALUMNUS Volunteering Procedures
We welcome any and all Indian Community School (ICS) alumnus who want to visit or
volunteer on days that they have off from their high school programs. The following
protocol is to be followed if any alumnus intends to come to ICS.
We request that students or parents contact the Guidance Counselor (525-6191) or the
Principal (525-6122) at least 2 days prior to the intended visitation date so that we can find a
classroom suitable for you to volunteer in.
A written note from the alumnus parent guardian is required when they arrive that states
the alumnus has permission to be at ICS.
This note must be signed, dated and provide a phone number the parent /guardian can
be contacted at during the alumnus time at ICS in case of an emergency.
Making arrangements for alumnus to ride the bus is also a possibility for those
alumnus that have siblings currently attending ICS.
Alumnus should not simply show up without making prior arrangements. If such does
happen the school reserves the right to deny your presence on campus.
Alumnus must understand that they will be assigned to a classroom or grade level and it
is that classroom teacher(s) responsibility they are volunteering with during their entire
stay at ICS to provide supervision.
Alumnus are expected to stay with assigned classroom or grade level the entire time that
they are at ICS, including eating lunch and helping with recess.
Alumnus student volunteers will adhere to the current ICS Dress Code (as stated on
Page 46 under Student Appearance) and all ICS rules, procedures and policies when they come to
volunteer.
Alumnus need to understand that there will be no unsupervised wandering around
the school. We need to minimize the disruption to classrooms as it interrupts the instruction
that is taking place.

Reminder………
WKCE testing will be given to all third through eighth grade students on the following
dates of November 2, 3, 4, 9, 10, and 11. Fourth and Eighth grade students will continue
the test and finish up on November 17 th and 18 th . If testing is in process, any late student
will be sent to RTC until the next section of testing begins, they will then join their class.

PARKING NOTICE
The Indian Community School’s circular drive is a Fire Lane. Except for school buses,
parking and/or waiting in the School’s circular drive is prohibited by the City of Franklin’s
Fire Department.
Please help us comply with the City of Franklin and DO NOT PARK OR WAIT IN YOUR
VEHICLE, UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES, FOR ANY LENGTH OF TIME IN
THE SCHOOL’S CIRCULAR DRIVE.
Also for the safety of our staff and students PARKING AND/OR WAITING IN YOUR
VEHICLE IS PROHIBITED ON ALL SCHOOL ROADWAYS. It has come to our
attention that cars parked in the roadway, especially in front of the Gymnasium Entrance,
does not allow for passage of safety vehicles in the event of an emergency, and may create an
unsafe condition for children exiting at the Gymnasium Entrance. Please use the generous
parking lots provided by the School and do not park on School roadways.

INDIAN COMMUNITY SCHOOL
DISABLED PARKING NOTICE
The Indian Community School currently has parking spaces
located in front of the main entrance that are reserved for
disabled persons. These spaces are marked by official traffic
signs indicating the restriction.
The restricted spaces are reserved for disabled persons who
have
applied for and obtained through the Wisconsin Department of
Transportation, a Disabled Parking Identification Card, or
Disabled License Plates.
Vehicles/owners who fail to display either, a Disabled Parking
Identification Card on the rear view mirror of the vehicle, or
Disabled License Plates, while parked in the restricted spaces
may be ticketed by the City of Franklin Police Department.
Parking in the School’s Restricted Disabled Parking spaces
without, Disabled License Plates or displaying a Disabled
Parking Identification card on the rear view mirror, is
prohibited.

“Families In Need” Program
Applications for the “Families In Need Program” will be accepted starting in
November, 2010. Families wishing to fill out an application for Thanksgiving and
Christmas vouchers may do so at the following times. In order to assure all families
in need receive services efforts will be coordinated with the Gerald Ignace Indian
Health Center.
Indian Community School will also take applications for holiday gift program and will
work with the Indian Health Center on making sure all community members receive
these services as well.

“Family Camp Opportunity”
Once again the Indian Community School has the opportunity to partner with
“Children’s Outing Association to offer a “Family Camp” to our ICS families. This
camp will be held August, 2011 at Camp Helen Brachman in Almond, Wisconsin.
Family camp has been very successful the past three years and the number of families
wishing to participate is growing each year. We are attempting to recruit new families
for this next session.
This camp will be an opportunity for the entire family to get away from the normal
worries for a few days. There will be some great family activities as well as some age
separated lessons and fun time. Come to camp, sit around the campfire, take a nature
walk, do some crafts, make new friends, participate in a sweatlodge and cultural
teachings and renew your family.
There is a minimal fee per family, however, with successful fundraising efforts families
could be able to attend free.
Although August seems so far away it is important we begin to identify families who
wish to participate early on. This will allow those families wishing to participate an
opportunity to help with fundraising efforts.
Family camp has been very successful the past three years and the number of families
wishing to participate is growing each year. We are attempting to recruit new families
as we would like to offer this opportunity to as many families as possible.
If you are interested in attending please contact Cindy Janechek as soon as possible.
Please note that families who have not attended camp in past years will be given priority
over families who have attended. If you have attended in the past and wish to go again,
please let us know as well. We will fill spots up with returning families on a first come
first serve basis starting with families who have went one year, then those who have
gone twice and finally with families who have gone all three.

Preparing a Deer
The Native Language & Culture staff is planning to possibly have a presentation that
involves the skinning if a deer. Ultimately the hide will be hopefully “brain tanned”
here at ICS at a later date to share this traditional process as well.

Fingerweaving & Basket Making Presentations
The Native Language & Culture staff is planning to possibly have a presentation that
showcases fingerweaving and basket making, presented by two Wisconsin tribal
members.
More information will be coming.
All ICS staff and parents are invited as well.
Presentations will take place in the DRUM, and the Native Language classrooms.
