SOLUTIONS FOR CERTAIN RECTANGULAR<br />

SLABS<br />

F. B. SEELY, Head of the Department of Theoretical and Applied<br />

Mechanics.<br />

The investigation is under the general supervision of F. E.<br />

RICHART, Research Professor of Engineering Materials, with the<br />

work divided into two general classifications: (1) experimental,<br />

having R. W. KLUGE, Special Research Associate in Theoretical and<br />

Applied Mechanics, in immediate charge, and (2) analytical, having<br />

N. M. NEWMARK, Research Assistant Professor of Civil Engineering,<br />

-in immediate charge.<br />

The program of the investigation is guided by an Advisory<br />

Committee whose personnel is as follows: representing the United<br />

States Bureau of Public Roads, E. F. KELLEY, Chief, Division of<br />

Tests, and A. L. GEMENY, Senior Structural Engineer; representing<br />

the Illinois Division of Highways, ERNST LIEBERMAN, Chief Highway<br />

Engineer, and A. BENESCH, Engineer of Grade Separations; representing<br />

the University of Illinois, PROFESSORS RICHART and NEWMARK.<br />

Acting in the capacity of Consultants to the Advisory Committee<br />

are W. M. WILSON, Research Professor of Structural Engineering,<br />

and T. C. SHEDD, Professor of Structural Engineering, both of the<br />

University of Illinois. Prior to July 1937, HARDY CROSS, Chairman<br />

of the Department of Civil Engineering, Yale University, <strong>for</strong>merly<br />

Professor of Structural Engineering, University of Illinois, served as<br />

a Consultant to the Advisory Committee.<br />

The author appreciates the assistance he has obtained from discussions<br />

with members of the staff and from the guidance of the<br />

committee. He is especially indebted to Professor Newmark <strong>for</strong> the<br />

numerous helpful criticisms and suggestions which he has contributed<br />

to this study. Detailed computations have been made on various<br />

sections of the analytical work by Special Research Graduate Assistants<br />

H. A. LEPPER, JR., E. D. OLSON, W. A. RENNER, and CARL<br />

ROHDE, and by the late 0. F. SLONIKER who was at the time an Assistant<br />

in Physics.<br />

3. Notation.-The following notation has been adopted <strong>for</strong> the<br />

purpose of this bulletin:<br />

w = deflection of slab, positive downward. In special cases<br />

subscripts or primes may be used with w to designate<br />

particular deflection functions. In these cases the<br />

symbols used to represent the corresponding bending<br />

moments bear a related mark of identification<br />

x, y = horizontal <strong>rectangular</strong> co6rdinates as defined in figures<br />

z = deflection of beam, positive downward
