Suggestions received from open-ended question<br />

Our last survey question asked if <strong>the</strong> <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> Ill<strong>in</strong>ois should change its process <strong>of</strong> hir<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>in</strong>ternational teach<strong>in</strong>g assistants. Twenty-five students, out <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> 60 that responded, said yes.<br />

Follow<strong>in</strong>g this was a general comment section <strong>in</strong> which we received many useful comments<br />

rang<strong>in</strong>g from, “My TA sucks because I do not understand what he is say<strong>in</strong>g” to “International<br />

TAs usually have good notes. So, I th<strong>in</strong>k this has compensated for <strong>the</strong>ir low pr<strong>of</strong>iciency <strong>in</strong><br />

English”. Comments like <strong>the</strong> second were more common. Most students recognize that <strong>the</strong>re is<br />

a problem with language barriers, but <strong>the</strong>y understand that <strong>the</strong>ir teach<strong>in</strong>g assistants are try<strong>in</strong>g to<br />

work with <strong>the</strong>m <strong>in</strong> order to create solutions. One <strong>of</strong> our questions asked student how hard <strong>the</strong>y<br />

th<strong>in</strong>k <strong>the</strong>ir teach<strong>in</strong>g assistants are work<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> order to achieve better oral pr<strong>of</strong>iciency. All but<br />

five <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> responses were ei<strong>the</strong>r hard or very hard. This shows that for <strong>the</strong> most part <strong>the</strong>re is not<br />

hatred between students and <strong>in</strong>ternational teach<strong>in</strong>g assistants, but <strong>in</strong>stead a relationship where it<br />

is understood that <strong>the</strong>re are obstacles to a shared goal.<br />

Teach<strong>in</strong>g Assistant Interviews<br />

Two teach<strong>in</strong>g assistants were <strong>in</strong>terviewed <strong>in</strong> order to ga<strong>in</strong> some more <strong>in</strong>sightful feedback and<br />

knowledge about <strong>the</strong>ir experiences as ei<strong>the</strong>r <strong>in</strong>ternational teach<strong>in</strong>g assistants or teach<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>in</strong>ternational students. Fortunately, I was able to <strong>in</strong>terview both, an <strong>in</strong>ternational teach<strong>in</strong>g<br />

assistant and a teach<strong>in</strong>g assistant who has had experience work<strong>in</strong>g with <strong>in</strong>ternational students <strong>in</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> classroom. The object was to f<strong>in</strong>d <strong>in</strong>formation perta<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g to experiences encountered or not,<br />

surround<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> topic <strong>of</strong> language barriers. Additionally, it was important to understand <strong>the</strong> how<br />

it affected <strong>the</strong> teach<strong>in</strong>g and/or learn<strong>in</strong>g experiences.<br />

Subject 1<br />

The subject be<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>terviews is a teach<strong>in</strong>g assistant from <strong>the</strong> psychology department; he is<br />

Ch<strong>in</strong>ese-American and is <strong>in</strong> graduate school study<strong>in</strong>g cl<strong>in</strong>ical psychology. Due to <strong>the</strong> request <strong>of</strong>
