she mostly has graded papers and dealt with o<strong>the</strong>r teach<strong>in</strong>g assistant tasks, she has not<br />

particularly held discussions with <strong>the</strong> students, except for one class she teaches now. This class<br />

covers topics and material that she has had previous experience with and prepares for robustly.<br />

Aga<strong>in</strong>, <strong>in</strong> this class she has not experienced many <strong>in</strong>stances where her language or accent was an<br />

issue <strong>in</strong> her classroom, and when <strong>in</strong>ternational students did need help <strong>the</strong>y would come to her<br />

<strong>of</strong>fice hours. She mentions that it seems as though <strong>the</strong>ir ma<strong>in</strong> problem is not so much <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

language but ra<strong>the</strong>r <strong>the</strong>ir writ<strong>in</strong>g style when hav<strong>in</strong>g to write papers (Interview, F2).<br />

Some <strong>in</strong>terest<strong>in</strong>g issues she brought up were that she did not feel language was so much <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

problem <strong>in</strong> learn<strong>in</strong>g and/or teach<strong>in</strong>g effectively. In her op<strong>in</strong>ion, she felt as though if native<br />

speakers would prepare for class, <strong>in</strong>stead <strong>of</strong> skimm<strong>in</strong>g through <strong>the</strong> read<strong>in</strong>gs, <strong>the</strong>y may be able to<br />

understand discussions or lectures that are given by <strong>in</strong>ternational <strong>in</strong>structors. Also she<br />

mentioned that she has asked o<strong>the</strong>r <strong>in</strong>ternational teach<strong>in</strong>g assistants if <strong>the</strong>y would be will<strong>in</strong>g to<br />

be more <strong>in</strong>volved <strong>in</strong> help<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> language barrier issues that <strong>the</strong>y may encounter at <strong>the</strong> university.<br />

She added that unfortunately, some <strong>in</strong>ternational teach<strong>in</strong>g assistants do not f<strong>in</strong>d <strong>the</strong> time or<br />

money to <strong>in</strong>vest <strong>in</strong> such opportunities. But F2 did add that she would be fur<strong>the</strong>r <strong>in</strong>terested <strong>in</strong><br />

elim<strong>in</strong>at<strong>in</strong>g language barriers at <strong>the</strong> university s<strong>in</strong>ce <strong>the</strong>y do exist. She also provided <strong>in</strong>formation<br />

about <strong>the</strong> university <strong>in</strong> regards to <strong>the</strong> courses that are <strong>of</strong>fered for <strong>in</strong>ternational students and<br />

teach<strong>in</strong>g assistants to, not only, assess <strong>the</strong>ir abilities and language skills, but also to guide <strong>the</strong>m<br />

through <strong>the</strong>ir college courses (Interview, F2).<br />

Analysis<br />

Ano<strong>the</strong>r important observation and comment made by F2 is that she was quick to po<strong>in</strong>t out that<br />

language barriers are a problem, but at times o<strong>the</strong>rs forget that <strong>the</strong>re could be more factors than<br />

just <strong>the</strong> language barrier that affects students. For example, F2 mentioned that if students do not<br />

properly prepare for <strong>the</strong> material <strong>in</strong> class, it will be difficult for <strong>the</strong>m to follow along <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> first<br />

place; she also said <strong>the</strong> same about teach<strong>in</strong>g assistants. But, <strong>of</strong> course, one cannot def<strong>in</strong>itely say<br />

that all native speakers skim through read<strong>in</strong>gs while all <strong>in</strong>ternational students try <strong>the</strong>ir hardest
