The purpose <strong>of</strong> this survey was to f<strong>in</strong>d out <strong>the</strong> severity <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> problems created by language<br />
barriers between native English speak<strong>in</strong>g students and <strong>in</strong>ternational teach<strong>in</strong>g assistants. Through<br />
this survey, we hope to narrow down <strong>the</strong> problems <strong>the</strong> <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> Ill<strong>in</strong>ois is currently<br />
experienc<strong>in</strong>g as well as possibly locat<strong>in</strong>g some solutions to <strong>the</strong> problem.<br />
Sample<br />
Sixty surveys were completed by undergraduate students at <strong>the</strong> <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> Ill<strong>in</strong>ois on <strong>the</strong> topic<br />
<strong>of</strong> language barriers with<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> classrooms. We adm<strong>in</strong>istered our survey to 60 undergraduate<br />
students walk<strong>in</strong>g through or sitt<strong>in</strong>g on <strong>the</strong> ma<strong>in</strong> quad. This is a small percentage <strong>of</strong> all <strong>the</strong><br />
undergraduate students on <strong>the</strong> university, but we feel that this survey is representative <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
population because <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> wide variety <strong>of</strong> students that responded. Accord<strong>in</strong>g to <strong>the</strong> Division <strong>of</strong><br />
Management Information, many <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>ternational students seek majors ma<strong>in</strong>ly <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Colleges<br />
<strong>of</strong> Eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g, Liberal Arts and Sciences, Bus<strong>in</strong>ess, F<strong>in</strong>e and Applied Arts, and Education,<br />
which <strong>in</strong>cludes undergraduates, graduates and pr<strong>of</strong>essionals. Approximately 4,819 foreign<br />
students <strong>of</strong> all levels attended <strong>the</strong> <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> Ill<strong>in</strong>ois <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> fall term <strong>of</strong> 2005. This means that<br />
91% <strong>of</strong> students were enrolled <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>se five colleges out <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> ten that <strong>of</strong>fer undergraduate<br />
degrees (DMI, 2005). In this survey <strong>the</strong> students represented most <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> colleges here on<br />
campus with LAS, Bus<strong>in</strong>ess and Eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g compris<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> larger groups. Of <strong>the</strong> 60<br />
respondents, 35 were female and 25 were male. The split between <strong>the</strong> academic years was pretty<br />
diverse, rang<strong>in</strong>g from freshmen to seniors.<br />
Questionnaire<br />
