How can an <strong>in</strong>ternational professional network and debate be scaled up to achieve the critical mass required to precipitate the wider adoption of MILU pr<strong>in</strong>ciples <strong>in</strong> government and the bus<strong>in</strong>ess community and their wider acceptance among the general public? All of the examples presented to the expert meet<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>volved the application of MILU to urban environments which was the focus of the expert meet<strong>in</strong>g . In the Netherlands MILU is also seen as a potentially useful concept <strong>for</strong> facilitat<strong>in</strong>g the achievement of multiple objectives <strong>in</strong> rural environments, particularly those under pressure from compet<strong>in</strong>g land uses, such as agriculture, biodiversity conservation, flood control and recreation. Further study of <strong>in</strong>ternational experience <strong>in</strong> this respect could prove valuable. MILU will only be accepted as a plann<strong>in</strong>g concept if it is seen by stakeholders and the broader public to deliver real benefits <strong>in</strong> practice. The development of a methodology to quantify the cross-sectoral benefits generated by MILU based on practical experience would promote its broader acceptance. France, Germany, Hong Kong, USA France, Germany, USA France, Germany, Hong Kong, USA The significance of the f<strong>in</strong>d<strong>in</strong>gs <strong>for</strong> Dutch actors <strong>in</strong>volved <strong>in</strong> MILU The review of <strong>in</strong>ternational experience has revealed the existence <strong>in</strong> the United States, Germany, France and Hong Kong of relevant <strong>research</strong> programmes and <strong>in</strong>terest <strong>in</strong> establish<strong>in</strong>g relevant new collaborative <strong>research</strong> ef<strong>for</strong>ts. This exploration of the field should be followed up <strong>in</strong> a decision-mak<strong>in</strong>g process to identify which <strong>research</strong> <strong>in</strong>stitutes are will<strong>in</strong>g are (f<strong>in</strong>ancially) able to make a firm commitment to participate or contribute to an <strong>in</strong>ternational <strong>research</strong> ef<strong>for</strong>t that comb<strong>in</strong>es the knowledge and experience of the various <strong>partners</strong>. From the Dutch side, the experiences <strong>in</strong> the countries <strong>in</strong>vestigated <strong>in</strong> this study can be put <strong>for</strong>ward as suitable topics <strong>for</strong> this jo<strong>in</strong>t <strong>research</strong> ef<strong>for</strong>t. A decision has yet to be made on which <strong>for</strong>eign <strong>research</strong> <strong>in</strong>stitutes should be approached. There<strong>for</strong>e cont<strong>in</strong>uation and further expansion of an <strong>in</strong>ternational MILU expertise network that will contribute to <strong>in</strong>ternational workshops/sem<strong>in</strong>ars and expert meet<strong>in</strong>gs. emanates from this meet<strong>in</strong>g The network and its activities will facilitate the exchange of knowledge and set up jo<strong>in</strong>t knowledge development activities <strong>for</strong> the subjects mentioned above.
