manifest: making it happen The $250 million IIT Challenge campaign has made many things happen. IIT’s endowment increased by over $90 million. SAT scores of incoming freshmen are significantly higher than they were before the campaign began. At no time in IIT’s history has the university attracted so many students who are so academically talented. Six new endowed chairs were established in the College of Architecture, Institute of Design, Armour College of Engineering and Science, and the Stuart Graduate School of Business. They are aligned with strategically important disciplines for the university’s future. The university hired outstanding young faculty in many key areas. Innovative academic and co-curricular programs were created to attract bright, ambitious students and sustain them over the course of their undergraduate studies. A strikingly designed campus center and new residence hall are being built, academic buildings are planned for major renovation, State Street has been revamped and 500 trees have been planted. AN IMPROVED APPROACH TO CONSTITUENTS CRAIG DUCHOSSOIS, A LEADING CHICAGO-AREA BUSINESSMAN AND IIT TRUSTEE, HAS SEEN AN UNUSUAL DEVELOPMENT AT THE UNIVERSITY: “IIT HAS TAKEN A UNIQUE POSITION WITH REGARD TO ITS CONSTITUENTS,” HE SAID. “THE UNIVERSITY HAS HELPED STUDENTS BECOME AWARE OF THE MULTIFUNCTION- AL COMMUNICATIONS THAT GO ON IN THE BUSINESS ENVIRONMENT, EXPOSING THEM TO THE COMPETITIVE PRESSURES AND ORGANIZATIONAL NUANCES IN THE FOR-PROFIT SECTOR. MAINTAINING SELECTIVITY IN RESPONSE TO THE NATIONAL DECLINE IN LAW SCHOOL APPLICA- TIONS, CHICAGO-KENT COLLEGE OF LAW REDUCED ITS ENTERING CLASS FROM APPROXIMATELY 400 TO 300. DEAN PERRITT SAID, “WE CONSIDER THIS STRATEGY THE MOST EFFECTIVE WAY TO ENSURE THAT AND THE BUSINESSES THAT SPONSOR IPROS AND OTHER LEARNING EXPERIENCES ARE THE QUALITY OF OUR STUDENTS REMAINS COMMEN- PREPARING AN EMPLOYEE POOL THAT WILL EVENTUALLY ENRICH THEIR ENTERPRISES.
