manifest: making a world of difference Having a diverse student body representing 97 different countries broadens the university’s understanding of global issues and opens up new educational opportunities. With its eye to globalization, the university has expanded its outreach in Asia and in Europe. In spring 2001, IIT held its second graduation ceremony in Bangalore, India, where it offers two master’s degree programs to engineers in India’s Silicon Valley. The programs— offered mostly via IIT Online and using streaming video on the Internet—also serve students in other Indian cities, including Chennai and Hyderabad. Through the university’s Paris Center, IIT architecture students have a new base for a semester of study abroad. The center has also forged new relationships with European engineering and architecture schools to facilitate the creation of new programs for IIT students and alumni. International projects and research collaborations—ranging from the design of highrise buildings in Argentina to environmental health studies in Finland—inform every college in the university. In the past five years, Chicago-Kent alone has had involvements with 18 countries. As a whole, the university has alliances with 68 colleges and universities abroad. Chicago-Kent’s Global Law and Policy Initiative provides law students and faculty with an international forum for scholarship, discourse and action. The law school is also home to Global Chicago, a civic organization dedicated to enhancing Chicago’s strengths as a global city. FROM KOSOVO TO MEXICO THE GLOBAL LAW AND POLICY INITIATIVE (GLAPI) IS THE ORGANIZATIONAL UMBRELLA FOR CHICAGO-KENT STUDENTS AND FACULTY WHO WANT TO GET INVOLVED IN INTERNATIONAL LEGAL ISSUES. GLAPI HAS SPEARHEADED PROGRAMS IN CENTRAL AND EASTERN EUROPE, THE FORMER SOVIET UNION, ASIA AND OTHER PARTS OF THE WORLD. ACCORDING TO LYDIA LAZAR, ASSISTANT DEAN FOR INTERNATIONAL LAW AND POLICY, “THE INITIATIVE’S NEWEST FOCUS IS MEXICO. OUR GOALS INCLUDE OUTREACH TO MEXICAN LAW SCHOOLS, EXCHANGE PROGRAMS FOR STUDENTS AND FACULTY, LIAISON WITH MEXICAN LAW FIRMS, AND IN PARTNERSHIP WITH THE CHICAGO BAR INTERNATIONAL PREPAREDNESS S.R. CHO, IIT ALUMNUS, TRUSTEE, AND CHAIRMAN OF THE KOREAN-BASED HYOSUNG GROUP, RECOGNIZES THE IMPORTANCE OF A GLOBAL OUTLOOK: “THE UNIVERSI- TY IS SERVING ITS STUDENTS WELL BY HELPING THEM LEARN TO SEEK DIFFERENT PERSPECTIVES AND RESPECT DIVERSE CULTURES.” ASSOCIATION, CONTINUING EDUCATION COURSES FOR ATTORNEYS WHO DEAL WITH MEXICAN LEGAL ISSUES.” 31 ILLINOIS INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY
