sprays above and below, lettered edge with date,<br />

VIOENTA MORTE DELETI HAGÆ COMITIS 20 AVG:<br />

A’O 1672, 48.5mm (vL III, 87, 3; Molinari 323; cf BDM<br />

VII, 34). Extremely fine with light tone. £250-350<br />

Johann de Witt (1625-1672); Cornelius de Witt (1623-1672).<br />

Forrer [BDM] writing of the larger signed medal for the same event,<br />

suggests that the medallist may be the sculptor Pieter Xavery (born<br />

c.1647, active 1667-1674), “who did not wish to disclose his name<br />

in connection with the execution of this medal”. Scher, The Proud<br />

Republic, simply states it may be a pseudonym.<br />
