Good Morning
Good afternoon
“In repeating what Christ did at the Last Supper in obedience to his command: "Do this in
memory of me!", we also accept Mary's invitation to obey him without hesitation: "Do
whatever he tells you." (Jn 2:5) With the same maternal concern which she showed at the
wedding feast of Cana, Mary seems to say to us: "Do not waver; trust in the words of my
Son. If he was able to change water into wine, he can also turn bread and wine into his
body and blood, and through this mystery bestow on believers the living memorial of his
Passover, thus becoming the 'bread of life'.” Ecclesia de Eucharistia, Blessed John Paul
Dear Parish Family,
By the time this week ends it will be
February! 2013 is off to a quick start. The
week will begin with the Feast of St. Thomas
Aquinas, patron of Catholic Schools and the
author of the Summa Theologiae. On Thurs-
xxxxx
day we celebrate the Feast of St. John Bosco.
On Saturday we will celebrate the Feast
of the Presentation of the Lord. –this marks 40
days since we celebrated Christmas. At one
time this was the conclusion of the Christmas
Season. It celebrates the presentation of the
Lord in the temple forty days after his birth and
the Feast of the Purification of Mary. It’s a day
when candles are blessed for home use reminding
us that the Christ came into the world as
the ‘Light of the World’. All sorts of traditions
have grown around this feast including our
own Groundhog Day which comes at the midpoint
of winter.
“Pennsylvania's earliest settlers were
Germans and they found groundhogs in profusion
in many parts of the state. They determined
that the groundhog, resembling the European
hedgehog, was a most intelligent and
sensible animal and therefore decided that if
the sun did appear on February 2nd, so wise an
animal as the groundhog would see its shadow
and hurry back into its underground home for
another six weeks of winter.” (groundhogday.org) >
‘If Candlemas Day be fair and bright
Winter will have another fight.
If Candlemas Day brings cloud and rain,
Winter won't come again.
xxxx
xxxx
If Candlemas Day be dry and fair,
The half o the winter's to come and mair;
If Candlemas Day be wet and foul,
The half o the winter's gane at Yule.’ (anonymous)
So we will need to wait until Saturday,
February 2nd to see if Punxsutawney PHIL
sees his shadow or not....but one way or the
other we can be sure of this: the season which
follows winter is SPRING and it will once
again, with sun or snow, arrive on the Twentieth
of March! Enjoy the seasons—they too are
a gift of the Creator! Have a great week!
