ily always knew that this would happen.
It was inevitable and just a matter of time.
So without hesitation she asked, “Gracie,
what are you doing?” With snow and mud covering
her face Grace took a break from her task to answer,
“I’m digging.” Lily came closer, “Digging for
what?” Again Gracie stopped her work -now somewhat
put off by Lily’s interfering questions. She
used her paw to remove snow from her nose and replied,
“I am digging a hole beneath this tree.” Lily
knew she should go no further but just one more
question and she would allow her sister to go on with
her task. And so with one word Lily asked, “Why?”
Gracie did not answer immediately as she
tugged and pulled on a root. Taking a break she said,
“I am digging a hole so that I can burrow in it and
then come back out again.” With a tilt of her head
Remember this is a SACRAMENTAL –like Ashes on ASH
WEDNESDAY or the use of Holy Water.
It is not a SACRAMENT but something to raise our minds
Lily asked, “Gracie,” is there a point to this?” Gracie
and hearts to the Lord and increase our devotion to Him.
gave out a growl and pulled back on the root. Satisfied
that it had been removed she turned to Lily and
said, “Yes, I want to burrow into the hole and then
come out and see if I will see my shadow.”
“Prayer is the raising of the mind to
xxxx
God.
Lily nodded, “I thought so. And I have to say
We must always remember this.
that I am disappointed with myself that I even
The actual words matter less.”
asked.” Gracie simply smiled since she had no idea
what Lily meant. Lily slowly walked away shaking
her head in wonderment adding, “Let me know how
Lent begins on February 13th.
it turns out.” Gracie responded quickly, “Oh, I can’t
What are your plans?
do that today.” Lily stopped, “and why not?” Gracie
smirked, “Because it’s not February 2nd!!”
But here ended the conversation by Lily’s
own design. She laid down on the porch and watched
wondering aloud, “And when
Father sees the hole beneath the
tree I wonder if it will be 6
more weeks of treats or none
until
Spring!”
ollowing Candlemas day we
F come to the feast of St. Blasé.
Legend says that Blasé, Bishop and
martyr, was also a physician. While
in prison he saved the life of a boy
who was choking on a fish bone.
Blasé became one of the most popular
saints of the Middle Ages invoked
for healings of every sort. Today this
tradition continues as a sacramental.
The Blessing of Throats will be used
as the final blessing of Mass this coming weekend, Saturday
and Sunday, February 2nd & February 3rd.
‘Through the intercession of St. Blasé, bishop and martyr,
may God deliver you from every disease of the throat and
from every other illness.’
What can or will you do to make Lent a personal
journey of change, prayer, and reflection?
This short paragraph from Catholic Customs and Traditions
by Greg Dues puts Lent into proper perspective.
“The whole church goes on retreat for six
weeks about a month and a half after the Christmas
Season. This annual spiritual renewal prepares for
the celebration of Christianity’s most fundamental
belief: Jesus was raised from the dead and is Christ,
the Lord! Lent, therefore, has no meaning in itself.
It prepares for Easter and new life.” (Greg Dues)
Come and be a
7th graders now welcome
I have always believed that the more you ‘keep’ Lent
the more splendid is your personal celebration of Easter.
This is not a January 1st ‘Day for Resolutions’—
nor is Lent a time to decide that you are going to lose a
few pounds or begin an exercise regime for the sake of
‘your own self’. It is a time to consider your relationship
with the Lord Jesus Christ and how it can be
strengthened, renewed, and more fully lived out. This
may call for some ‘sacrifices’ and some hard work—
but it is done so for the Honor & Glory of God!
Think about it before Ash Wednesday rolls around!
