As Brita<strong>in</strong>’s national academy for eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g, we br<strong>in</strong>g together the country’s<br />

most em<strong>in</strong>ent eng<strong>in</strong>eers from all discipl<strong>in</strong>es to promote excellence <strong>in</strong> the<br />

science, art <strong>and</strong> practice of eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g. Our strategic priorities are to<br />

enhance the UK’s eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g capabilities, to celebrate excellence <strong>and</strong><br />

<strong>in</strong>spire the next generation, <strong>and</strong> to lead debate by guid<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>formed<br />

th<strong>in</strong>k<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong>fluenc<strong>in</strong>g public policy.<br />

The Academy’s work programmes are driven by three strategic priorities, each<br />

of which provides a key contribution to a strong <strong>and</strong> vibrant eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g<br />

sector <strong>and</strong> to the health <strong>and</strong> wealth of society.<br />

Enhanc<strong>in</strong>g national<br />

capabilities<br />

As a priority, we encourage,<br />

support <strong>and</strong> facilitate l<strong>in</strong>ks<br />

between academia <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong>dustry.<br />

Through targeted national <strong>and</strong><br />

<strong>in</strong>ternational programmes, we<br />

enhance – <strong>and</strong> reflect abroad –<br />

the UK’s performance <strong>in</strong> the<br />

application of science, technology<br />

transfer, <strong>and</strong> the promotion <strong>and</strong><br />

exploitation of <strong>in</strong>novation. We<br />

support high quality eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g<br />

research, encourage an<br />

<strong>in</strong>terdiscipl<strong>in</strong>ary ethos, facilitate<br />

<strong>in</strong>ternational exchange <strong>and</strong><br />

provide a means of determ<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>and</strong> dissem<strong>in</strong>at<strong>in</strong>g best practice. In<br />

particular, our activities focus on<br />

complex <strong>and</strong> multidiscipl<strong>in</strong>ary<br />

areas of rapid development.<br />

generation<br />

Excellence breeds excellence. We<br />

celebrate eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g excellence<br />

<strong>and</strong> use it to <strong>in</strong>spire, support <strong>and</strong><br />

challenge tomorrow’s eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g<br />

leaders. We focus our <strong>in</strong>itiatives to<br />

develop excellence <strong>and</strong>, through<br />

creative <strong>and</strong> collaborative activity,<br />

we demonstrate to the young, <strong>and</strong><br />

Us<strong>in</strong>g the leadership <strong>and</strong> expertise<br />

of our Fellowship, we guide<br />

<strong>in</strong>formed th<strong>in</strong>k<strong>in</strong>g, <strong>in</strong>fluence<br />

public policy mak<strong>in</strong>g, provide a<br />

forum for the mutual exchange of<br />

ideas, <strong>and</strong> pursue effective<br />

engagement with society on<br />

matters with<strong>in</strong> our competence.<br />

The Academy advocates<br />

progressive, forward-look<strong>in</strong>g<br />

solutions based on impartial<br />

advice <strong>and</strong> quality foundations,<br />

<strong>and</strong> works to enhance<br />

appreciation of the positive role of<br />
