In the first half of 2005, Austrian support
of the Jerusalem Foundation was highlighted
by two major events:
Jerusalem's new Herzl Museum on Mount
Herzl was officially opened on May 19th,
2005. The opening marked Israel's first
official Herzl Day, set on the10th day of
the Hebrew month of Iyar to coincide
with Herzl’s birthday. The Jerusalem
Foundation was able to support the
Museum, which presents Herzl, his life
and his work in an innovative, multimedia
format, with help that came predominantly
from Austria. In the presence of Israel's
President, Moshe Katsav, as well as
Knesset Speaker Reuven Rivlin, the
this important project, Prof. Jacob
Allerhand and Mrs. Rudolfine Steindling,
who unveiled the donors' plaque. Close
to the opening, yet another Austrian donor
joined this list, contributing generously:
The Government of Styria, Waltraut
During a festive dinner at the Konrad
Adenauer Conference Center at Mishkenot
Sha’ananim with representatives of the
Jerusalem Foundation, Austrian Secretary
of State Franz Morak, the members of
his delegation and other guests were
introduced to the A. and E. Libsch music
project - in memory of the Jewish Austrian
Foreign Minister Dr. Ursula Plassnik.
During her visit to Jerusalem in June
2005, Dr. Plassnik also met with the
Jerusalem Foundation’s President, Ruth
Cheshin, and promised that Austria would
contribute to the Center for Jewish-Arab
Education. (See below about the visit of
Austria’s Minister of Education, Science
and Culture Mrs. Elisabeth Gehrer).
Dr. Jankowitsch used his visit for touring
projects supported by donors from Austria.
On the schedule were, in addition to the
new Herzl Museum and the Living Museum
at Ein Yael (see below), the Vienna Garden
in the Park of Nations at the Wohl Rose
Garden, the Nittel Traffic Education Park,
the Jerusalem Teachers’ Seminary, the
Rehavia High School (Gymnasium) and
its Leon Zelman Hall; he also was informed
on past work done with Austrian help on
the Via Dolorosa in the Old City and the
Arab Omariya School, as well as on
ongoing research at the Jerusalem Zoo.
The tour culminated in a stop at the Hand
in Hand School for Jewish-Arab Education
- for which the Jerusalem Foundation is
building a new, comprehensive campus
that also enjoys support from Austria (see
Dr. Plassnik’s visit was followed by a visit
from Austria’s Minister of Education,
Science and Culture, Mrs. Elisabeth Gehrer
in November 2005. At the construction
site of the Bilingual School, Mrs. Gehrer
new campus, a pledge that is shared with
the Austrian Development Agency (ADA)
Chairman of the World Zionist Organization
and the Jewish Agency, Sallai Meridor,
and Jerusalem Foundation President, Ruth
within the framework of this year’s
international June event was the
