No one could convince you that tattooing the initials of your sorority on your ankle was frivolous, or that putting the name of your latest, greatest lover on your back might prove awkward to explain in a few years. If you are one of the estimated 10 million people who have a tattoo, you may also be one of those who now want to remove it. Fortunately, there are ways. Of course, the best advice remains this warning: remember that it’s easier to get a tattoo put on than to take it off again. Still, that doesn’t mean that it can’t be done. you no longer love the man of your former dreams, you no longer think a peace symbol looks good on your ankle, or you simply no longer wish to have any tattoo at all. But what are you going to do about it? that if you go the route approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and most cosmetic dermatologists and plastic surgeons—the Q-switched lasers—it will likely take six to 10 laser treatments, performed one to two months apart, before the tattoo is safely removed. Tattoo removal should be done by a doctor or clinic and not by a tattoo parlor. There are several ways to try to remove a tattoo, but they don’t always work, can cost a lot of money, and may require a lot of treatment. Laser treatment is the most common way to remove a tattoo. Light from the laser breaks up the tattoo ink. The body itself gets rid of the treated areas over the next few weeks. Most tattoos need more than one laser treatment to be fully removed, however, and some inks cannot be removed by lasers at all. And she uses the Q-switched lasers that include Alexandrite, ruby, and Nd:Yag to remove tattoos. They don’t do harm to the overlying skin and are best used with tattoos colored in black and blue.
