squeezing himself into a size 40. “So at age 40, I
had a 36-inch waist again. Fourteen years later, I
Getting rid of unwanted fat via liposuction is
one of the top procedures men choose, according
to the American Board of Plastic Surgery. Droopy
eyelids, sagging posteriors, and flabby pectorals
are other areas men consult with surgeons about
correcting.
New York’s Dr. Scott Newman, M.D , FACS, says
he’s definitely seeing more male patients today
compared to 10 or 12 years ago. The Chief of Plastic
Surgery at St. John’s Riverside Hospital in
Westchester, and assistant clinical professor at the
Albert Einstein College of Medicine says there are
a number of factors causing men to turn to the surgery:
“The number of people choosing the surgery
has increased, and the number of surgeries has
grown. Because of improved medicine and techniques,
the surgeries are safer, the downsides of
many surgeries such as anesthesia effects are
much less, and recovery times are greatly improved.
All those things add up to the benefits outweighing
the risks today,” he said.
Many more men are choosing non-surgical
procedures, such as injectable corrections (think
Botox), and other options as well. “For the non-invasive
things that we do, we’re seeing a lot more
males come in,” Newman said. “I think it’s because
we haven’t had this many injectable products that
are much improved and more specific than before.”
He also noted that it’s become more socially
acceptable across the board. “Men are concerned
about their appearance, and now you see many
more men getting pedicures, manicures, and facials.
It’s the way society looks at it today—it’s accepted.”
Hair replacement remains the number-one
choice of improvements for men. Balding and receding
hairlines age a man quickly. Not all corrections
for that problem fall under the umbrella of
cosmetic surgery, though implants, one popular
method of correction, are considered a surgery.
Facial sculpting includes rhinoplasty (nose resculpting),
cheek lifting, and chin reshaping—also
all common procedures for men as well as women.
The reasons men choose the surgeries vary
widely. Many men want to appear younger for professional
reasons. More Boomers are finding themselves
tackling career changes, downsizing, or
professional moves to stay ahead. In interviewing,
they see their competition as a younger, albeit less
experienced worker, willing to take a lesser salary.
To give themselves the “youth market” edge to sell
along with their experience, some men are undergoing
surgery for facelifts and body contouring to
project a younger facial appearance and firmer,
more muscular profile.
Botox and laser surgery are being used to
erase frown lines, crow’s feet, and brow wrinkles,
and enhance lips and other facial features that
change in the aging process.
Microdermabrasion and chemical peels can
take away rough, blotchy skin or scarring that age
a face.
After extreme weight loss, body contouring
with liposuction and the use of implants for pectorals,
buttocks, and calves correct sagging skin
and misshapen builds. Some doctors are using an
“abdominal etching” technique to create the desired
“rippled abs” favored by body-builders and
other athletes.
The midsection spread, or “love handles”
around the midsection, are very common targets
for male patients, Newman said. The upswing in
this surgery for men is due to modern techniques
that have improved the time spent recovering, as
well as the precision with which it can be done
today.
“Ten or 15 years ago, procedures like liposection
for love handles or surgery for the reduction of
male breasts (gynecomastia) were in their infancy.
They’ve improved the techniques remarkably over
the last decade. Those of us who do a lot of it can
do it with a lot more finesse and accuracy. There
are a lot of other things that we use medically that
