RISING STARS ACTIVITIES: During this fiscal<br />

year, <strong>the</strong> Rising Stars were involved in a variety <strong>of</strong> events, which<br />

provided positive social, cultural and academic activities in<br />

which <strong>the</strong> members were able to participate. In <strong>the</strong> St. Thomas-<br />

St. John District, <strong>the</strong> Rising Stars completed <strong>the</strong>ir three seasons<br />

with an average participation <strong>of</strong> 150 <strong>of</strong> its 210 members.<br />

Kings”, <strong>the</strong> Orchestra<br />

paid tribute to Rising<br />

Stars Arranger Elvino<br />

“Sifu” George, who passed away in April 2009 following his<br />

retirement, Michael “<strong>the</strong> King <strong>of</strong> Pop” Jackson; and, <strong>the</strong> King<br />

<strong>of</strong> Kings. The highlight <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> concert was <strong>the</strong> Orchestra’s dance<br />

production number and tribute to Michael Jackson that was<br />

choreographed by Bridget R. Hodge. As usual, <strong>the</strong> Orchestra<br />

serenaded at various locations throughout <strong>the</strong> island during <strong>the</strong><br />

Christmas Season, including Seaview Nursing Home, Yellow<br />

Cedar Group Home, <strong>the</strong> Superior <strong>Court</strong>, in <strong>the</strong> Post Office<br />

Square and at <strong>the</strong> cruise ship docks.<br />

During <strong>the</strong>ir Carnival Season, <strong>the</strong><br />

Orchestra participated in a joint<br />

venture with <strong>the</strong> Rising Stars from<br />

St. Croix. Both groups performed<br />

toge<strong>the</strong>r at several activities,<br />

including <strong>the</strong> Pre-teen Tramp, <strong>the</strong><br />

Cultural Fair, and both Carnival<br />

Parades. The St. Thomas Orchestra<br />

also performed in <strong>the</strong> Pan-o-rama<br />

prior to <strong>the</strong> arrival <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> group<br />

from St. Croix.<br />

This year, <strong>the</strong> Orchestra held a Summer Enrichment Camp,<br />

whose main focus was to improve and enhance <strong>the</strong> playing<br />

skills <strong>of</strong> its members - especially those who joined during <strong>the</strong><br />

recruitment summer. In addition to playing <strong>the</strong> steelpan, and<br />

involvement in academic sessions, members were introduced to<br />

a series <strong>of</strong> rap sessions which included a session on Life Skills,<br />

Personal Development, Teenage Relationships and STDs. They<br />

also enjoyed an island tour which took <strong>the</strong>m to various parts<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> island that was unknown to <strong>the</strong>m. The Summer Camp<br />

culminated with a night concert on <strong>the</strong> Bayside and <strong>the</strong> proceeds<br />

from that activity benefited <strong>the</strong> Orchestra’s Scholarship Fund.<br />

During this period, Rising Stars Pan-in-Motion, participated in<br />

several events to represent <strong>the</strong> Orchestra: St. John Celebration;<br />

<strong>Virgin</strong> Gorda Parade and an event sponsored by <strong>the</strong> Department<br />

<strong>of</strong> Tourism. They also participated in <strong>the</strong> Pan-o-Rama and<br />

J’ouvert during <strong>the</strong> Carnival Season.<br />

During this period, <strong>the</strong> members also participated in <strong>the</strong> Tutorial<br />

and Enrichment Program. The overwhelming result <strong>of</strong> this<br />

academic assistance is reflected in <strong>the</strong> overall GPA average <strong>of</strong><br />

85% for <strong>the</strong> members. Additionally, fifteen members graduated<br />

from high school and thirteen <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>m received <strong>the</strong> $1,000.00<br />

Rising Stars Jahmal Andrew Scholarship. The o<strong>the</strong>r two members<br />

had <strong>the</strong>ir scholarships deferred until after <strong>the</strong> completion <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

military service.<br />

The Rising Stars members in <strong>the</strong> St. Croix District had an active<br />

season also, and performed in twenty-two different events during<br />

this fiscal year. Some <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> activities in which <strong>the</strong>y performed<br />

included: VI/PR Friendship Day, World Food Day at UVI, <strong>the</strong><br />

Christiansted Retail Association Jump Up, Increase <strong>the</strong> Peace<br />

Fun Day, <strong>the</strong> Welcome Reception for <strong>the</strong> Judges <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Third<br />

Circuit <strong>Court</strong>, Gallows Bay Night, 14th <strong>Annual</strong> Mango Melee<br />

and Tropical Fruit Festival, Emancipation Cultural Parade, 3rd<br />

<strong>Annual</strong> Governor’s Fair, Pan Fest and for <strong>the</strong> Department <strong>of</strong><br />

Tourism during <strong>the</strong> arrival <strong>of</strong> cruise ships. Additionally, <strong>the</strong>y also<br />

participated in various activities in <strong>the</strong> St. Thomas Carnival with<br />

<strong>the</strong> Rising Stars <strong>of</strong> St. Thomas; and, in St. Croix Festival’s Food<br />

Fair and parades. The member’s participation in <strong>the</strong> Tutorial and<br />

Enrichment Program improved significantly as did <strong>the</strong>ir grades.<br />

During <strong>the</strong> summer, <strong>the</strong>y hosted a Summer Enrichment Camp<br />

for <strong>the</strong> members, with <strong>the</strong> goal <strong>of</strong> advancing <strong>the</strong> member’s<br />

musical ability and enhancing <strong>the</strong>ir understanding <strong>of</strong> music as it<br />

relates to <strong>the</strong> steelband. The members also participated in several<br />

cultural and eco-friendly activities with <strong>the</strong> hopes <strong>of</strong> preserving<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir rich heritage. The members participated in workshops that<br />

included creating box gardens, doll making, solar car assembling,<br />

quadrille dancing and cooking classes. They also participated<br />

in Rap Sessions which covered various cultural and societal<br />

topics, including gang violence, mental health and wellness, and<br />

understanding disabilities. In addition to playing <strong>the</strong> steelpan,<br />

<strong>the</strong>y also enjoyed bowling, playing golf, skating, a beach clean-up<br />

and fun day in addition to <strong>the</strong>ir “Day <strong>of</strong> Giving” at <strong>the</strong> Wilford<br />

Pedro Home for <strong>the</strong> Elderly. The Orchestra’s summer finale<br />

included a guest appearance by renowned panist, Liam Teague<br />

who also conducted<br />

steelpan workshops<br />

with <strong>the</strong> members.<br />

This year, <strong>the</strong>re<br />

were three graduates<br />

from <strong>the</strong> St. Croix<br />

Rising Stars Program<br />

and each received a<br />

Notebook computer,<br />

as part <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

$1,000.00 Rising Stars<br />

Scholarship.<br />

Between both districts, <strong>the</strong> Rising Stars Program was able to<br />

raise a total <strong>of</strong> approximately $25,000.00 for <strong>the</strong>ir individual<br />

scholarship funds as a result <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir participation in various<br />

community and fund raising activities.<br />
