GENERAL INFORMATION
Conference Headquarters
Headquarters is located in the Red Lion Hotel at the Park.
Hotel Information
The conference hotels have a 3 p.m. check-in time. All hotels have
a noon check-out time.
All hotels have baggage storage areas and would be happy to store
your baggage before check-in time and while you’re attending
Saturday’s session. You must be checked out of your rooms prior
to the closing session on Saturday unless your hotel has approved
an extension.
Please remember that not all guests are with our conference, and
they have the right to a pleasant hotel experience. In respect of their
comfort, a quiet time of 10 p.m. will be enforced on all sleeping
fl o ors of all hotels.
Code of Conduct/Image
All conference attendees have read and signed the Code of Conduct
form, which is in the possession of your adviser/chaperone. We
represent an outstanding career and technical student organization
and project the image of the future leaders we are. Thoughtful
planning and professional behavior result in a pleasant and
rewarding conference. We maintain a tradition of excellence
through exhibiting superior behavior and appearance wherever we
gather!
Restaurants and Food Credits
The Spokane area has many fast-food, casual, and fine-dining
restaurants. Reservations are suggested in finer restaurants. Don’t
forget to tip for service. Fifteen to twenty percent is recommended
for good service. A general rule of thumb is to look at the tax on
your bill and double it.
There will be breakfast and lunch buffets at the Red Lions and
Doubletree for FBLA members and advisers.
Dress Code
Appropriate business attire is required for all members, advisers,
and staff during the business hours of 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. as
well as during all general sessions, regional meetings, and other
conference activities unless otherwise noted in the conference
program. Dress code monitors are on duty during conference
events.
For men: Slacks, dress shirt and tie, or slacks, banded collar
shirt with sport coat or business suit. Suit or sport coat is
preferred. Dress shoes and socks are required.
For women: Suit, pants suit, dress, or skirt with blouse/
sweater/blazer, and appropriate dress shoes required. Capris
or gauchos with coordinating jacket/suit, worn below the
knee.
Denim may be worn for caucusing and the dances only. Conference
t-shirts and wrist bands are required for all evening conference
activities.
Identification
SBLC attendees will be identified by name badges as well as wrist
bands. The wrist band fastens on with a snap closure. It’s meant to
stay on your wrist for the duration of the conference and is not to
2013 FBLA State Business Leadership Conference
be shared with others. The name badge identifies you individually.
The wrist band identifies you as a conference attendee and will
protect you from uninvited guests as members without wrist bands
will not be admitted into conference activities. Wrist bands must
be worn with the conference t-shirt to attend the karaoke and the
dance.
Chaperones and Curfews
Washington State FBLA requires an in-state adviser/chaperone to
student ratio of 1 to 10 for overnight travel. Advisers/chaperones,
please enforce curfews. This means students must be in their rooms
at stated times. Students outside their rooms after curfews must be
with an adviser/chaperone. Curfew is 11:30 p.m. on Thursday and
Friday. Please enforce curfew for all students, not just your own.
We are all here to help each other!
INB Performing Arts Center
Seating at general sessions will be by region and has been assigned
randomly. A copy of the seating diagram is available outside
conference headquarters.
Exhibit Booths
Exhibits will be held in the Red Lion Hotel at the Park Tower
Prefunction areafrom 11:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Thursday and from
9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Friday. Be sure to visit the exhibit area and see
our professional and college exhibitors!
Silent Auction
Visit the Professional Division’s Silent Auction in the Exhibit area
for students and in Ballroom D for adults.
For Your Safety
• Do not wear name badges outside the hotels and INB
Performing Arts Center for non-conference activities, but
please keep your wrist band on.
• Check the location of the nearest fire exit to your room.
• Notify your family of your hotel room numbers as soon
as possible.
• Secure valuables in the hotel safety deposit box. Cellular
phones are to be turned off while you attend conference
activities!
• Travel in groups of three or more! If approached by a
stranger, walk away without conversing.
• Do not give money to anyone you do not know.
• Use the peep hole in your room door and do not open the
door unless you can identify your visitor.
• Use the chain locks on the door when in your room.
• Have your room key ready before reaching your room.
• Remember that Spokane is a city; please travel in groups
when outside of the hotel.
Dance Conduct
As an FBLA member at this conference, it is important to
remember that professionalism does not stop once your events are
over. Therefore, we are reminding all members that inappropriate
dancing is not allowed at any FBLA sponsored dances.
Inappropriate dance behavior includes moshing, slam dancing, freak
dancing, or any lewd or sexually explicit displays or anything that
could be construed as inappropriate touching. If any of the above
5

GENERAL INFORMATION
conducts are observed, you will be asked to leave the dance. If the
general atmosphere at the dance reflects inappropriate behavior,
the dance will be shut down and students sent to their room for an
early curfew. Please remember that you are FBLA members and
are expected to act in a professional manner at all times. Your
conference t-shirt and wrist band will be your admission to the
dance.
The Voting Session
On Saturday morning, voting delegates will arrive at the designated
time to be seated in the front section of the INB. Those wishing
to observe the voting session may sit in the back after voting
delegates are seated.
The general assembly should be quiet upon entering the voting
session. The general assembly may be seated only in the back to
observe the process of voting. Members should not be going in and
out of the room. Please plan on staying in the room once you are
in and seated.
After the voting session has been completed, there will be a
short recess after which voting delegates are allowed to join their
chapters in the appropriate assigned section. Once the Awards of
Excellence session has started, we ask that all members remain in
their seats and stay for the entire session.
If you plan to attend the National Leadership Conference, or are
an award winner, it is very important that you attend the meeting
following the Awards of Excellence ceremony. All top 5 winners
must show a “Y” for YES in the National Eligible column of the
Chapter Members chart on our Registration System. This will
assist the state office knowing if winners plan to compete at NLC
or relinquish their National competitive place to the next winner.
Anyone planning on attending NLC MUST notify the State Office
by Friday, May 3.
Shuttle Service
Shuttles are being provided and will be available for all tours.
Clock Hours
OSPI has approved 15 clock hours for this conference. In order to
receive clock hours, you must sign up at the Registration counter
at the Red Lion Hotel at the Park to receive your conference
evaluation form. After attending both general sessions and
workshops, you must complete the evaluation form in order
to get your signed Inservice Registration Form for clock hours.
Inservice Registration Forms will be available at the conclusion of
the Awards Session.
K EYNOTE S PEAKER
H OAN DO
Raised by poor immigrant parents who nearly lost their lives to escape the Vietnam
War, Hoan Do understood at a young age the importance of sacrifice and hard
work. After being accepted to Pepperdine University in Malibu, California,
Hoan concentrated on succeeding so he could in return take care of his parents.
With the tremendous pressure Hoan placed on himself, in addition to the stresses of
being a college student, he found himself hitting rock bottom. Refusing to settle and give
up, Hoan used this experience as a turning point in his life.
Immediately after graduating from college, Hoan beat out candidates who were
considerably older and vastly more experienced than him to work with the number one
personal development company in the world. As a national speaker and corporate trainer,
Hoan conducted training sessions for distinguished audiences that included: Coldwell
Banker, Century 21, Bank of America, Honda, Toyota, UBS Financial, Chambers of
Commerce, and for the U.S. Army.
For the past five years, Hoan has been fiercely committed to sharing practical advice
that will help students to succeed in and out of school. He is the recipient of the Verizon
Wireless Motivator Award and was named the Best Youth Mentor by the International
Examiner.
