Vol. 4 Issue 1
The Clovis High School Freshman Academy is
honored to be such a vital part of your students’
i
lives. It is our hope that their experience here will
be a positive one that serves them well today and in
the future.
Counselor's Corner
Short Cycle Assessment Dates:
December 14- English and History
December 15- Electives
December 16- Math and Science
December 17- Make up in the am
All students are required to be here
during this week. This is important as
the semester is ending, grades have to
be averaged and credits are to be
earned!!!
Students took the Explore Test in
October and results should be here in
December. Results will be sent home
and your son/daughter will meet with
the counselor to discuss these results.
Student Council
Student Council has started off great this year!
We began the year with 13 members that were
elected from Yucca and Marshall, and added 6
more in the election at the beginning of this
school year. We were busy during volleyball
season as we ran the concession stand
together with Honor Society.
Our students did a great job planning and
participating in football homecoming week.
They picked the themes that the student body
would dress up as during spirit week, and
decorated the gym for the homecoming dance
that Friday. The gym looked great and was a
big success!
We are now looking forward to planning the
talent show, as well as some of the other events
that we will host later in the year. The sponsors
appreciate all of the work these student leaders
have done, and are looking forward to a great
year!
Team One’s Cat Scratch Fever Newsletter
Greetings from Team One! We are off to a great year, and
enjoy having each and every child in our class. Our students
are currently learning topics involving genetics, WWI events, a
short story by John Steinbeck, algebraic functions and
geometric proofs. In the future, keep an eye out for a cross
curricular activity in biology and history involving a mock
crime scene investigation with New Mexico’s lead crime scene
investigator. In addition, the English department will be
having a debate in class involving Philosophical Chair
discussions, research and persuasive speaking.
Finally, on November 23 rd , we will have a celebration for all
students who have maintained an average of a C or above in all
of their classes and did not have any disciplinary actions. We
will send out more information on this celebration as it
becomes available. We are looking forward to each of the
upcoming assignments, and our students are working hard to
prepare themselves for end of the semester exams. If you have
any concerns, please do not hesitate to contact Team 1 teachers.
Hello Parents,
Team 2 Purple Pride
Team 2 - Purple Pride - has had a really great start to the school
year. Our team is full of a lot of really great kids. Thanks so
much for trusting them to us. We are really looking forward to
the rest of the school year.
A lot of the kids still do not understand how their grades will
be figured and reported. The most important grade and the one
students should be concerned with the most is their semester
grade. It will appear on the report cards as S1. This grade is
figured by counting the first 9 weeks grade as 50% and the 2nd
9 weeks grade as 50%. If a student did not do as well the 1st 9
weeks as he/she would have liked, they can make that up by
working hard the 2nd 9 weeks. A higher grade the 2nd 9 weeks
period will help offset a poor 1st 9 weeks grade. We are
talking with your kids about this everyday. Please, reinforce
this at home too. This is the grade that will determine if the
student receives credit for the course. It is also the grade that is
recorded on the student’s permanent transcript.
The school will be having a celebration day on November 23rd.
This is the day before the Thanksgiving Break. Our team will
be watching movies and having a snack in the morning and
student council will have the Talent Show buyout in the
afternoon. This should be a great day!!! The kids usually
surprise everyone at the talent show.
If you need to contact any of the team members, please feel
free to call or email at anytime. Email is generally the fastest
way to get a response.
Thanks,
Dear Parents,
Wow, can you believe that we are getting close to wrapping up the first semester? Our students have done some
fabulous things in Careers, which we hope are preparing your son or daughter for the "real world". We have covered
how to fill out job applications, how to write a resume and how to interview for a job. The Careers teachers are so
pleased, to see that students have used the tools given to them and have asked us to checked over some of their real
applications for jobs they are seeking. Students have begun one of our 7 Career Clusters during this nine weeks.
Currently we are currently wrapping up the Hospitality and Tourism Cluster. You should be very proud on how well your
son or daughter has taken the many careers given to them in this cluster and have turned in some great projects!! One
more cluster will be covered before Christmas break, Health and Biological Science. It is our hope to get our community
involved by bringing in some doctors or scientists to visit with our students. We would love any suggestion or
connections you might have in this career field to bring in some outside guest speakers. Thank you so much for all that
you have done thus far for your child and their education.
Team 5--Cattitude
Team 5 is doing some interesting lessons in the core
classes. In biology, you should be seeing or hearing that
your child is studying DNA and genetics. In history they
are beginning the Great Depression. The Pearl is being
read in English classes and A Separate Peace is being read
in Pre AP English. The different types of graphs and
equations are being learned and worked with in Algebra.
If your child is in Geometry, they have just finished up
studying triangle relationships and continue to study
triangles and their relationships with other shapes.
We are very excited about the project coming up at the end
of November that will be crossing the 4 core classes
together. Each class will be tying into the study of a crime
scene and the trial that comes from that scene. We are
thankful that Clovis Police Department and the New
Mexico State Police will be helping in this study. We are
sure that you will be hearing conversations from your child
and seeing the interest and excitement that comes from
being a real CSI investigator.
The end of semester celebration will take place on
November 23. We would be happy to have you come and
celebrate this with us. This day is to congratulate those
students who have taken care of grades and have had
positive behavior throughout the nine weeks.
Please let us know if you have any questions or concerns
that we may help you or your child with.
Thanks,
Technology - Robotics
It has been an exciting first few weeks of classes in
the Introduction to Technology Classroom!
Students have learned about the various types of
engineering fields and the education necessary to
pursue those careers. We have also begun an indepth
study of robotics. They have learned how
robots are used in work, play, exploration and
everyday living. Teams have been completing hands
on labs to learn things such as programming robots
to travel, controlling the distance as well as
implementing measured turns through mathematical
calculations and use of the NXT software. I look
forward to discovering the world of robotics with
your student! If you have any questions, or would
like to visit during your student’s class period please
feel free to contact me.
Yearbook – Journalism
The Journalism staff has done an outstanding job
during the first months of school! Not only have
they designed the cover, built the design ladder, and
taken photos at games and events, they have also
shown their awesome skills as CHSFA’s portrait
photographers!
In order to take the best portrait of your student the
Journalism team studied lighting, posing, and basic
photography skills for weeks. I must say they did
an awesome job and I hope that you will be pleased
with the results.
VOLLEYBALL
White Football
We are so proud of the group of young ladies
we had this year for our 2010 Volleyball
team. We are extremely proud on how hard
the girls came to practice everyday and were
ready to work! Each game our girls
improved, on one way or another, from
passing, hitting, setting and even
communicating. We feel the girls really
worked as a team this year!
Our girls Purple team went 10 wins and 5
losses and our White team went 15 wins with
2 losses. The white team went onto the
Conference Tournament and took 2nd place
out of 10 teams. Coach Wyatt and Coach
Morris would also like to thank our parents
for their support this season. We would also
like to thank our parents for the "yummy"
goody bags for our travel trips. A big thank
you goes out to Mr. and Mrs. Aguilar for
helping our girls support the "Breast Cancer
Awareness" month by providing our girls
with pink socks and pink hairbows and also
to Mr. and Mrs. Guthals for the providing the
trailer for our homecoming week parade.
Great job girls for a wonderful and
successful season. We look forward to
BACK-TO-BACK UNDEFEATED SEASONS
The CHSFA White Football Team just completed their
2 nd straight undefeated season finishing the year 9-0.
The season was a huge success, which showcased the
future of Wildcat football. The offense averaged 39
points per game while the defense allowed 9 points per
game. The Cats were led on offense by Kamal Cass
who rushed for over 1300 yards and scored 29
touchdowns (26 on the ground and 3 on kickoff returns).
Traivon Sopila added 875 yards and 16 touchdowns (13
on the ground, 2 returns and one through the air).
Peyton Lott, Andres Garza, Pedro Acuna, Kenny
Robinson, Damien Brightly, and Michael Cordova led
the defense. Several other players contributed to the
success of our defense as well. There were numerous
“big hits”, interceptions, and sacks throughout the year.
The defense posted 3 shutouts and held all but 2 teams to
9 points or less.
Coach Dobbins and Coach Gillespie want the players to
know how proud they are of them for their dedication
and commitment to the Wildcat program. Great job
guys…we can’t wait to see you playing on Friday
nights!!!
The CHSFA Purple Football team finished with a record of 5-2. This season was a huge
success in player development. Dakotah Yandell, Shaprie Bryant, and Xaiver Hobbs led
the Cats on offense. The offensive line was a huge part of the success including strong
play from Hank Dropps, Markus Aragon, Braden Ashcraft, and Justin Hawkins. Alfredo
Lopez, Dustin Cantanzaro, Taidje Eichem, and Michael Jaramillo led the defense. The
Cats defensive play grew stronger and stronger through each game as well as throughout
the year.
Coach Allen and Coach McBroom want the players to know how proud they are of them
