EXCURSIONS<br />
Several tours are offered to <strong>PICMET</strong> ’99 participants to<br />
give the guests an opportunity to see some of Oregon’s<br />
spectacular scenery.<br />
We strongly recommend that you preregister for<br />
these tours because of limited space. The registration<br />
form on page 10 can be used for that purpose. <strong>PICMET</strong><br />
reserves the right to cancel a tour if minimum reqirements<br />
are not met. In that case, preregistered guests<br />
will be offered other alternatives.<br />
Spirit of Portland<br />
TRAVEL<br />
<strong>PICMET</strong> has designated Joan Sher at GK Ltd. Travel in<br />
Portland, Oregon, as the official travel agent for the conference.<br />
She will advise you and help you plan your<br />
trip, including car rentals, pre and post conference<br />
trips, and tours while in Portland. It is impossible to<br />
list all the exciting trips and breathtaking scenery easily<br />
available from Portland. Central and Southern Oregon,<br />
British Columbia, Alaska, Hawaii, San Francisco, Las<br />
Vegas and Reno are just a few examples. Joan will<br />
arrange a personalized trip for you on request.<br />

CAR RENTAL<br />
Hertz has been designated the official car rental company<br />
for <strong>PICMET</strong> ’99. Hertz is offering special rates for<br />
conference participants from July 18th to August 5th.<br />

Mt. Hood and Columbia Gorge, Sunday, July 25, 1999<br />
($60; departs 8:45, returns 17:30; price of lunch not<br />
included)<br />
Treat yourself to a scenic wonderland as you enjoy<br />
one the most outstanding one-day excursions in<br />
America. Don’t forget to bring your camera and plenty<br />
of film! Mt. Hood dominates the horizon as you leave<br />
the Willamette Valley and enter the forest-covered<br />
slopes of the Cascade Mountains. You will follow the<br />
historic “Barlow Trail” to Government Camp. It is now<br />
just a few miles to Timberline Lodge at the 6,000 foot<br />
level of Oregon’s Highest mountain peak. Next, depart<br />
Mt. Hood for the famous apple and pear orchards of<br />
the picturesque Hood River Valley. The next stop is<br />
Multnomah Falls. Located in the famous Columbia<br />
River Gorge, the waterfall cascades a spectacular 620<br />
feet to the gorge floor. Then follow the Old Scenic<br />
Highway to Crown Point, where from high above the<br />
mighty river you are treated to a 35-mile long<br />
panoramic view of the Gorge.<br />
Portland City Tour, Monday, July 26, 1999<br />
($30; departs 12:45, returns 16:00)<br />
This tour begins by winding through the streets of<br />
downtown, Old Town and Chinatown while learning<br />
the humble beginnings of this now cosmopolitan city.<br />
It is just a few minutes’ drive up into the West Hills<br />
overlooking downtown Portland. In sprawling<br />
Washington Park you will visit the world-renowned<br />
International Rose Test Garden. Next, tour through<br />
the lovely Arlington Heights residential area and the<br />
Hoyt Arboretum. Enjoy a scenic ride to the magnificent<br />
Pittock Mansion nestled in Portland’s West Hills.<br />
Tour this French Renaissance mansion built in 1909<br />
and take in the panoramic view of the snow-capped<br />
peaks of the Cascades, the Willamette River, the<br />
Columbia River and Portland from the mansion’s<br />
grounds. Continue on through the tree-lined streets of<br />
the Portland Heights residential area before heading<br />
back into downtown (admission to Pittock Mansion<br />
included).<br />
