This WFSV has two 550hp engines driving
FF41 waterjets, giving a 25 knot service speed
and a maximum of 30 knots. ECC Topaz can
carry up to 3 tonnes of cargo on deck and is
certified for 3 crew and 12 passengers up to
60 miles from a safe haven. Its first contract is
to support the wind farm off Barrow in
Furness in northwest England.
Among vessels on order are three Austal
WFSVs. This Western Australia company built
a reputation for large aluminium passenger/
vehicle catamaran ferries, many with
Rolls-Royce waterjet propulsion. Now, it has
established itself in the wind farm support
vessel market with its Wind Express series of
catamarans. The latest order is for three
21.3m craft which will have twin MTU
engines, each coupled to a 45A3 waterjet.
These vessels will be built for Turbine
Transfers in the UK.
Rolls-Royce will supply two 56A3 waterjets
and the new Compact Control System for a
newly designed 24m long catamaran from
South Boats, one of the largest builders of
WFSVs. Coupled with MTU engines that
produce 1,400hp each, the vessel can travel
at speeds in excess of 28 knots. Rolls-Royce
has also received an additional order from
South Boats for twin FF500 waterjets to
propel a 17m WFSV.
