Cardiff
Capital for Conferences
Welcome to Cardiff
Croeso i Gaerdydd
Cardiff, the capital of Wales, is a city of
contrasts. Innovative architecture sits
alongside historic buildings; the bustle of the
city centre is only a few strides from acres of
peaceful parklands.
Within the one square mile of Cardiff’s bustling city
centre are the big three attractions: the Millennium
Stadium, the National Museum Cardiff and Cardiff Castle.
These attractions sit alongside luxury hotels, a network
of shopping malls and arcades and a wide range of
restaurants, bars and cafes.
Just a few minutes from the city centre is Cardiff Bay,
with its sparkling waterfront bordered by dozens of
restaurants and cafes, and plenty to see and do both on
and off the water. It’s a perfect blend for business and
incentive meetings.
The city is also ahead of the game when it comes to
technology – Cardiff was the first city in the UK to offer
extensive Wi-Fi coverage throughout the city centre and
Cardiff Bay.
The Cardiff Conference Bureau provides advice on
venues, hotels and facilities. The team will also handle
bed bookings for delegates at special rates and
arrange familiarisation visits for conference organisers.
We look forward to working with you to make your
event a success in Cardiff.
Conference city
Cardiff is rapidly becoming one of the
UK’s top conference destinations. Large
or small, the city has a wide range of
venues. It’s popular, too, as witnessed
by the number of organisations that keep
coming back.
With several new hotels opening in recent
years the number of hotel rooms in the area has
increased to over 4,000, with more planned.
The Wales Millennium Centre, home of Welsh
National Opera and a world class arts and
entertainment venue, further enhances Cardiff
as a prestigious destination. City Hall and the
National Museum are part of one of the most
impressive civic centres in Europe.
The city centre includes a variety of excellent
venues, such as Cardiff International
Arena and St David’s Hall. Europe’s largest
undercover venue, the versatile Millennium
Stadium, dominates the Cardiff skyline and is
able to cater for a variety of events from the
FA Cup Final to concerts, exhibitions and
major conferences.
Don’t just take our word for it - here’s
what other conference organisers say
about Cardiff.
www.cardiffconferencebureau.co.uk 1
“ I have to say that the reunion went
extremely well and all of us are very
grateful for your efforts to find us a suitable
hotel. BAFUNCS and Cardiff owe you and
your colleagues at the Conference Bureau
a very big thank you.”
2
Duncan Morris, Convenor and Registrar, BAFUNCS 2005
“ We had not only very positive feedback
during the conference, but both solicited
and unsolicited post-conference feedback
is exceptionally positive with very strong
appreciation of the venue. We owe you a
real debt for all the continuing trouble and
care you’ve taken and for your availability
throughout and warm support.”
3
Peter Grundy, President, IATEFL 2005
“A quick note to say thank you for all your
help with the Celtic Film and Television
Festival 2005. We look forward to
cooperating with you again on future
events.”
Making the most
of your stay
Bustling waterfront city
There’s plenty to see and do in Cardiff. The
Castle is in the city centre, close to many of
the conference facilities and a short walk from
the Millennium Stadium. Also nearby is the
National Museum Cardiff, home of one of the
finest Impressionist collections outside France.
A few minutes from the centre, the regenerated
Cardiff Bay, one of Europe’s most attractive
waterfront developments, is home to the Wales
Millennium Centre, the National Assembly’s new
Senedd building and a host of bars, restaurants
and shops.
Cardiff by night
Cardiff will offer your delegates a great time
after hours. As you would expect of a capital
city, Cardiff enjoys a lively and varied nightlife
and a wide choice of entertainment ranging
from opera and rock to drama and dance.
Whether you’re looking for live music,
comedy or a West End show, you’re sure
to find something to keep you and your
delegates entertained.
Shopping paradise
Shopping is one of Cardiff’s main attractions,
with the city’s blend of popular high street
and designer stores as well as numerous
Victorian and Edwardian shopping arcades.
The majority of the shopping district is
pedestrianised, and the covered arcades
criss-cross the city centre, home to dozens of
independent and boutique stores with unique
gifts, clothes and food, many of them with a
Welsh flavour.
3
Close at hand is the city’s café quarter, and
future plans include the exciting St David’s
2 project which will further enhance Cardiff’s
city centre retail offer.
Another new development is the International
Sports Village, which will bring even more
venues, entertainment and leisure facilities to
the Bay.
Cardiff and Capital
The Cardiff and Capital Region Card offers
The facilities include:
St Fagans Castle
Home to the Plymouth estate for
generations, St Fagans Castle and its
gardens lie in the eastern part of the
Museum grounds. A Grade 1 listed
building, the castle is a fabulous
example of Elizabethan architecture
with interiors furnished to reflect the
lives of the family in residence at the
end of the 19th century. A perfect
setting for an intimate wedding of up
to 40 guests, the castle boasts rich
tapestries, embroidered furniture,
opulent rose-wood and oak furniture
and wonderful family paintings.
Gardens
Acres of mature woodlands and rolling
parklands surround the Museum
gardens. The formal gardens illustrate
the gardens developed around the
great houses of the gentry. These
include the walled Italian Garden, a rare
example of an Arts & Crafts garden
in Wales with delicate orange trees,
sprays of agapanthus, rare roses and
a tranquil pool. The Edwardian Rosery
offers the intoxicating romance of the
Edwardian secret garden with medieval
fish ponds stocked with carp and
cream, a splendid formal parterre and a
landscaped arboretum. These gardens
are perfect for wedding parties,
receptions and are an unequalled
talking point for any corporate
gathering or hospitality.
The Oakdale Workmen’s Institute
Moved brick by brick from the close
community of Oakdale, Caerphilly
the Workmen’s Institute is a fantastic
building for corporate away days,
weddings and receptions. The historic
Concert Hall, Reading Room, Library
and Meetings Room evoke a sense of
late Victorian splendour with original
fittings and furniture sitting side by side
with our modern corporate facilities.
The Concert Hall can comfortably
seat up to 70 people with a wonderful
sprung floor for dancing and an original
stage for any entertainment. Oakdale is
also the perfect base for team building
and company meetings as it sits at the
top of the Museum site surrounded
by mature woodlands and historic reerected
buildings.
modernen Stadt ausmacht, entziehen.
