For example, <strong>in</strong> Leipzig’s<br />

Sp<strong>in</strong>nerei: Around 1900 it was the<br />

largest cotton sp<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g mill on the<br />

European cont<strong>in</strong>ent. Today, the old<br />

factory town is more densely packed<br />

with art and culture than any other<br />

town or city <strong>in</strong> <strong>Germany</strong>: Eleven<br />

galleries and exhibition places <strong>in</strong>vite<br />

you to shop and take a look. Cafés<br />

and restaurants, theatre and dance<br />

ensembles, art and culture <strong>in</strong>itiatives,<br />

small specialist shops and <strong>in</strong>dividual<br />

l<strong>of</strong>ts re<strong>in</strong>force the charm<strong>in</strong>g urban<br />

atmosphere <strong>of</strong> the complex. Art<br />

production, art presentation and art<br />

trade have become a focus. Worldfamous<br />

pa<strong>in</strong>ter Neo Rauch, member<br />

<strong>of</strong> the new Leipzig School, has a<br />

Culture: Until December 2009 the<br />

Museum <strong>in</strong> the “Round Corner”<br />

will be host<strong>in</strong>g a special exhibition<br />

dedicated to “Leipzig on the Road<br />

to the Peaceful Revolution”. <strong>The</strong><br />

museum is located <strong>in</strong> the build<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong><br />

the former Stasi secret service. In its<br />

former <strong>of</strong>fices visitors can f<strong>in</strong>d out<br />

about the function, work methods<br />

and history <strong>of</strong> the East German secret<br />

police.<br />

<strong>The</strong> Kunsth<strong>of</strong>passage <strong>in</strong> Dresden’s<br />

Neustadt also tempts visitors with<br />

art and shopp<strong>in</strong>g treats. Various local<br />

artists have designed and revitalised<br />

the six courtyard houses after the fall<br />

<strong>of</strong> the Iron Curta<strong>in</strong>. For example,<br />

huge metal mirrors reflect sunlight<br />

<strong>in</strong> the formerly dark Courtyard <strong>of</strong><br />

Light. Today, there are two stages<br />

and further projection spaces for<br />

temporary multimedia performances<br />

and <strong>in</strong>stallations, film projections and<br />

action theatre. In the “Courtyard <strong>of</strong><br />

the Elements“, water games make<br />

artistically arranged dra<strong>in</strong>pipes s<strong>in</strong>g<br />

and the Courtyard <strong>of</strong> fairy-tale<br />

creatures has a detailed façade design.<br />

Culture: the Goethe Institute will be<br />

celebrat<strong>in</strong>g the anniversary <strong>of</strong> the fall<br />

<strong>of</strong> Wall and Dresden with a European<br />

theatre festival from 31 October to<br />

8 November 2009. Six pieces under<br />

the motto “After the Fall” will mirror<br />

different perceptions and effects<br />

<strong>of</strong> this major historical event on<br />

European society.<br />

leads around the former island city<br />
