Dresden, Leipzig and (East) Berlin
have been the most popular cities
since German reunification. Event
planners and attendees of meetings
and events will find a wide range
of extraordinary social programme
options especially in these cities
which have seen the greatest changes
since 1989. They owe their great
charm to the many restored old
buildings, unconventional cafés,
trendy boutiques, contemporary
galleries and industrial buildings,
where artists and designers offer
original products.
For example, in Leipzig’s
Spinnerei: Around 1900 it was the
largest cotton spinning mill on the
European continent. Today, the old
factory town is more densely packed
with art and culture than any other
town or city in Germany: Eleven
galleries and exhibition places invite
you to shop and take a look. Cafés
and restaurants, theatre and dance
ensembles, art and culture initiatives,
small specialist shops and individual
lofts reinforce the charming urban
atmosphere of the complex. Art
production, art presentation and art
trade have become a focus. Worldfamous
painter Neo Rauch, member
of the new Leipzig School, has a
studio there.

Culture: Until December 2009 the
Museum in the “Round Corner”
will be hosting a special exhibition
dedicated to “Leipzig on the Road
to the Peaceful Revolution”. The
museum is located in the building of
the former Stasi secret service. In its
former offices visitors can find out
about the function, work methods
and history of the East German secret
police.
The Kunsthofpassage in Dresden’s
Neustadt also tempts visitors with
art and shopping treats. Various local
artists have designed and revitalised
the six courtyard houses after the fall
of the Iron Curtain. For example,
huge metal mirrors reflect sunlight
in the formerly dark Courtyard of
Light. Today, there are two stages
and further projection spaces for
temporary multimedia performances
and installations, film projections and
action theatre. In the “Courtyard of
the Elements“, water games make
artistically arranged drainpipes sing
and the Courtyard of fairy-tale
creatures has a detailed façade design.

Culture: the Goethe Institute will be
celebrating the anniversary of the fall
of Wall and Dresden with a European
theatre festival from 31 October to
8 November 2009. Six pieces under
the motto “After the Fall” will mirror
different perceptions and effects
of this major historical event on
European society.

They form Germany’s largest
enclosed courtyard complex: the
Hackesche Höfe in Berlin. The
courtyards with their unique Art
Nouveau façade were restored in the
mid-1990s and are now among the
capital’s major attractions. Visitors
will find a mix of culture offerings,
restaurants, shops and offices in the
historical buildings. Fashion boutiques
with Parisian haute couture labels
and avant-garde fashion studios
have settled in the neighbourhood,
renewing Berlin’s international
reputation as a major fashion centre.

Culture: Berlin’s “Way of the Wall”
leads around the former island city
on a historically interesting section
where one can still find remainders
or traces of the wall, alternating with
attractive landscapes.
