All smiles: Kaylee and her family are much happier after moving back to
South Carolina.
It was my first day of freshman year. I was in a new town and a
new school. My family had moved from the South to Illinois on faith to save my
parents’ marriage, and I suddenly found myself adjusting to life as a Midwesterner.
I’ve always been a social person, so being in a new school and having no friends
was difficult. But my Southern accent and outgoing personality helped me make
friends quickly, and within a few months I was the most popular girl in school.
It was an awesome feeling. By the end of my sophomore year, that “feeling” had
become more important to me than anything else—including my relationship
with Christ.
The summer before my junior year I started going to parties, sneaking into bars,
and doing things I knew I shouldn’t do. My entire junior year I lived on the wild
side, worrying my parents to death. But no matter how late I came in or what I’d
