A 56-year-old information center consultant from Vinnitsa,
Ukraine, Lyudmila Pikovskaya said, “People
coming to the IATP center have opportunities to acquire
new knowledge, broaden their experience, and,
finally, become employed.” 10 As 24-year-old interpreter
from Tiraspol, Transnistria, Moldova, Anya
Novoselova explained, “Employers need qualified employees.
That is why there have been situations in
which employers demanded that their workers learn
computer and internet skills or they would be
fired.” 11 As thirty-one-year-old doctor from Imishli,
Azerbaijan Arzu Salmanovasaid, “These days it is important
to have computer skills in order to find a
job”. 12 A public servant from Zhitomir, Ukraine, Irina
Perlovich said that the knowledge acquired at IATP
technical training helped her keep her job and stay
afloat in this time of financial crisis. 13
Anzhela Razuvaeva was a 39-year-old low-paid economics
instructor from Tiraspol, Transnistria,
Moldova. She came to IATP training to make herself
more competitive in her hunt for a better-paying job,
a transition she decided was impossible without a
solid understanding of computer and internet skills.
She signed up for nearly every technical training IATP
offers—computer and internet basics, MS Office suite
applications, and later more advanced IT courses on
creating websites, wiki pages, and blogs. After completing
all the courses, she was a competitive candidate
for the director’s assistant position at the local
meteorological center and quickly landed the job.
Now she is responsible for book-keeping, processing
documents, and communicating with the press. In addition,
she noted, “I was noticed at my work and my
colleagues asked me to help in dealing with this or
that document. They asked where I learned all of my
knowledge and I told them it was all from an IATP
center. After hearing that, three of my colleagues
started visiting the center themselves.” 14 Twentytwo-year-old
journalist Razi Samedov from Imishli,
Azerbaijan, was an unemployed student before he
started coming to the IATP center. “I had been
searching a long time for an interesting career and I
finally found what I was looking for after I learned
computer and internet skills at the IATP center,” he
said. 15 Gulshan Kabrailova from Shirvan, Azerbaijan,
said she could not find a job because she lacked computer
skills. After enrolling in computer and internet
training with IATP, she reported a short time later she
had already found a job. 16
Free technical training and internet access not only
help individuals develop professionally, they help develop
the effectiveness and capacity of local organizations
as well. Head of the Literature and Drama Department
of the Vinnitsa Puppet Theatre in Vinnitsa,
Ukraine, Margarita Shapoval expanded the activities
of the theater and insisted it acquire a computer and
internet connection. “All our work is computer-based
and now we regularly correspond with international
partners through e-mail,” she reported. She added
that establishing new contacts abroad led them to
organize an international theater festival recently.
“Our puppet theater can now share its experience
with other theaters worldwide, and our staff regularly
visit the websites of our colleagues abroad to keep up
with new trends in our sector. We are now informed
about cultural events in the world thanks to the IATP
center and the internet access we get there.” 17
