Waiting for a GP appointment for a
minor condition is becoming a thing of
the past thanks to the ‘minor ailments
scheme’.
Local people suffering from one of 25
common but non-serious conditions can get
free advice, treatment and medicines direct
from their local pharmacist.
Every GP surgery in Islington is participating in
the scheme. Patients need to speak to their
local surgery and if their condition is covered
under the scheme, they get a voucher that
can be presented to an Islington pharmacist.
The patient can then visit their pharmacist for
confidential advice and treatment rather than
see their doctor.
Eyes front!
The Eyes for Islington scheme has
been featured in a Government best
practice manual on improving
residential areas.
The Eyes are residents who have
volunteered to be the ‘eyes and ears’ of
the borough, reporting to the council any
problems such as with litter or dumped
rubbish, roads, pavements and parks.
Well done Eyes and keep spotting!
facility, the i-recycle centre.
Developed in partnership with the Science
interactive displays, games and videos on
recycling and waste issues.
Visitors can find out about the UK’s rubbish
problem, discover how to make a real difference
by reducing rubbish and recycling more at home,
as well as being amazed by the interesting things
that can be made from rubbish.
Free visits are available for schools and
community groups by appointment. i-recycle is
based at the Household Reuse and Recycling
Centre in Cottage Road, N7.
Bulk busters!
Homes for Islington is introducing a free
borough-wide bulk rapid response
refuse collection service for council
estates after its successful pilot
resulted in the collection of 395 tonnes
of household items, including 750
refrigerators.
With this service, estate residents or caretakers
report the presence of dumped bulk refuse and
within 24 hours a team arrives to collect the
items and dispose of them efficiently. The items
are assessed for their suitability for recycling or
renewal.
Interested in becoming an
Eye?, call 020 7527 2000 or
With the support of council residents, the pilot,
begun last August and funded by the Islington
Strategic Partnership, has nearly doubled its
target to collect 200 tonnes of refuse.
Council residents should contact
their caretaker or area housing
office for a bulk refuse pick up.
