NEWS FROM OUR HOUSES & AROUND
Bordor
In the first week of December St. Paul Miki School
distributed the result of the Second Terminal Exam to the parents
in person. According to the staff, this time the performance was
better. Now St. Paul Miki School is closed for Christmas vacation
from 23 December. It will re-open on 3 January 2011.
In the parish there were 8 Christmas Triduums during
Advent, preached in different villages by Bene and the Catechists.
Gulshan followed up by being available for the Sacrament of
Reconciliation and offering Mass in all those villages. Well done,
Bene and team, as you provided them with spiritual food to nourish
their lives.
On the occasion of Christmas for the Vigil Mass George
Anthony from Divya Bharati was the main celebrant. The
parishioners were delighted to see him after a long gap. From
TRTC Tom, Clement, Martin and Michael Fernandez and from
LPG Augustine, Pawan and Justin too were present for the Vigil
Mass. This time before the Vigil Mass, a movie was arranged for
the parishioners. Pawan came with an LCD projector and movie.
Thank you, Pawan, for you helped them to prepare well.
This month Bordor family was blessed with a few guests
who made their presence felt with their warm heart. From Loyola
Maxi, Cyril, and Sushil Suman dropped in on their way to Rengra.
From Tepasai, Julian and Tony, all the way from Jhinkpani, Fr.
Edwin Coelho, and Sisters Rejis, Teres, and Rashmi were here to
share with us the joy of Christmas.
Greg is on home visit. He will be back to Bordor in the first
week of January 2011. Gulshan is taking care of the parish and
school activities in Greg’s absence.
Divya Bharati
The month of December saw John Mundu conducting single
handedly a three-day Lay Leaders’ Training programme from the
5 to 7 December followed by a three-day Marriage Preparation
Course for 7 couples of St. Xavier’s Church, Chaibasa from the 16
to 18 of this month. George joined Divya Bharati on the 17
December and both of them helped out in the Chaibasa Church,
assisting the Parish Priest in various spiritual ministries. George
went to Bordor for the Midnight Mass and the next day celebrated
the Christmas Day Mass in Chaibasa Jail. John Mundu went to
Rajaparom Centre of Christ the King Church, Chakradharpur, for
Midnight Mass and the Christmas Day Mass in Baihatu. On the
26, John left for a Theology Faculty Meet in JDV, Pune.
- George Anthony
DNC, Pune
JDV entered into a new phase of history with the
inauguration of the new PG building. It was inaugurated by His
Excellency, the Nuncio, on 3 December. Rt. Rev. Bishop Thomas
Dabre presided over the function. A good number of Religious
Superiors and well wishers were present for the function. The
new PG block stands out with its fantastic modern architecture in
the JDV campus. Hats off to Alex Gnana for his tireless work! The
new building is having well furnished auditorium named after the
Late Fr. Joseph Neuner and audio visual class rooms. Francis
Ezhakunnel is the Moderator of the PG Block. Soon after the
inauguration, Alex Gnana was down with dengue but within a
couple of days he was back to his normal health. Paul Fernandes
and Francis Ezhakunnel are busy planning out some new courses
in the institute.
The festive month began with exams for both Theos and
Philos in JDV, which got over by the 17 December. Soon after that
the whole community was busy preparing for Christmas under
the leadership of Mahesh. A crib was built in the Philos chapel on
the theme “Born to Bridge”. In the midst of all the festivities,
Vincent Kumar kept himself busy with his MA Public
Administration exams. The issue of four-wheeler licence to all the
philosophers added to the joy of Christmas. Now, Stephen,
Vincent, Pascal and Mahesh are experts in driving after having
had regular practices in Viman Nagar and Yerwada road for the
last one month. Stephen co-ordinated the driving classes for the
Philos. There were 20 scholastics for the driving classes. Stephen
organised a tour for the Gorpuri children to Mumbai and
Aurangabad. Jam Jawans, Mukti and Vincent, are in the KITCOM
and are providing us delicious food. Our staff members, Francis,
Paul and John Karu kept themselves busy with education
committee meetings from 28-30 December. This year Cyril’s
birthday was celebrated with camp fire in the Philos basketball
court in true adivasi style. The celebration of Christmas was
extraordinary with Mass and gathering of Chhottanagpuri faithful
of the city.
- Mahesh Nayak
Kendrapara
On the 28 we had the Annual School Fair where we had 53
stalls. There was great enthusiasm among the students to make
the maximum possible profit so that they could win the prizes and
trophies. From this activity we managed to get some income for
the +2 building.
On 16 of December Fr. Provincial came for the annual
visitation. He met the students, the staff and the community
members. He spent a lot of time with us; and really it was a gracefilled
moment. We all were re-energized after the visitation. Thank
you, Mike, for your inspirational leadership. On that day we
celebrated his birthday. George Joseph, John Nag and Sirinus
came to wish him. What surprised us most was that George Joseph
drove the car all the way from XIM to Kendrapara in heavy traffic.
Three cheers to George!
Another mega event was our School’s Annual Parents’ Nite
which was on 21 December. The Minister of Energy, Orissa, was
the Chief Guest. The programme was really eye catching, and the
Minister was very happy about the programme and was prepared
to contribute Rs. 15 lakhs for the +2 building. The special guest
was our MLA. And he was so impressed by the rocking
programme of our students that he promised Rs. 3 lakhs for a
separate Computer Lab for the
Juniors. PD Thomas was our Guest of Honour and he stayed
till the last item on the programme. In his speech he spoke about
Jesuit education “Ratio Studiorum”. He appreciated the students’
performance.
The staff had a Christmas get-together with a sumptuous
dinner. On the same day the Catholics of Kendrapara Mass Centre
had their Christmas get-together. They had the celebration till 10
p.m. It was Francis Peru’s idea to have a programme like this.
Greg Xaxa is busy conducting marriage classes both at
Kendrapara and Aruna Nagar. He is also busy with the preparation
of Christmas celebration at Aruna Nagar parish. We all will be
here during the Christmas holidays except Greg who will go to
Jamshedpur to attend the ordination.
- James Tharaniyil
LCE, Jamshedpur
The Superior, Hilary, and Principal, Kuru, made a trip to
the Kolhan University, Chaibasa driving all the way via Hata to
pay a courtesy visit to Prof. Salil Roy, the new Vice-Chancellor
who among other things, recalled his association with our college.
Tony was in TRTC, Chaibasa
on 10 and 11 December to conduct a very productive seminar
cum workshop for 50 teachers from Rengra, Bordor, Basahatu and Maluka
schools on his doctoral topic, “Working with Emotional Intelligence.”
The same seminar was conducted in Loyola School, Jamshedpur, for 40
teachers from different ICSE/ISC schools of Jamshedpur.
The LCE campus wore a festive mood as Christmas was
round the corner. The birth of Jesus was meaningfully celebrated
with get-togethers and celebrations. First, the Jesuit community
had a get-together on 15 December as most of us would be out for
Christmas. Then the women at the Aruppe Bhawan Hostel celebrated
Christmas with an inspiring Mass in the morning followed by variety
entertainment in the evening and a sumptuous dinner. On 20
December, it was the turn of the college students to celebrate with
a variety of items to spread peace and happiness. The tableau on
the birth of Christ enacted by the students, Rani, as Mary and
Subasish, as Joseph, was superb and well appreciated by all. Among
others, Mr P.K. Chobe, the new Plant Head, Tata Motors who graced
the occasion as the Chief Guest reminisced his close association
with Christmas celebrations during his school days
- Hilary Lobo
Loyola Niwas, Jamshedpur
With every passing day in December, the campus begins
to take on an improved look, thanks to the forthcoming Ordinations
in Jamshedpur. We now have a few, more or less fully furnished
rooms, to take care of guests, which keeps PCF, Jerry Cutinha
and Minister, Tony Stevens, on their toes. Soon after Christmas,
we had a tsunami like wave of “fly by night” visitors, in Frs.
Henry, Francis, Amrit and John on their way to Pune, topped off
by Theologians from RTC, Ranchi who came in to help Jerry with
the ordination preparations. Alex Mascarenhas left for a short
home visit to Mangalore during which he will be blessing two
weddings. Along with his Consultors, Mike hosted a Christmas
lunch for the office and support staff.
- Tony Stevens
Loyola School, Bhubaneswar
An unusual cold wave has gripped the Twin Cities, bringing
down the temperature to as low as 12ÚC. The “Tin Jubilee”
celebration of the school, ‘a small step towards the giant leap’
was successfully held on 18 December. Provincial Mike was the
Chief Guest. The teachers and workers who had stood by us
through ‘thick and thin’ during their decade of service, were
given special mementos. Provincial Mike in his brief speech
thanked the parents for trusting the Jesuits and expressed that
Loyola will be a premier school of Orissa soon. The contribution
of our former Principals, Tony P and Eric Cassel were gratefully
acknowledged. Over 850 participants enthralled the parents for
four hours. The highlight of the evening was “The Sound of
Music” – a third successive musical, (after Lion King and The
Wizard Of OZ which is a novel concept in the Temple City) received
a standing ovation from the audience. Thanks to our dedicated
staff. The entire community was involved to see that all went off
without a hitch.
The Provincial also completed the Annual Visitation of the
House, which was a time for reflection, change of action and grace.
The families of the Sunday Mass Centre had a Christmas
get together with “khana-peena as well as naach-gan”. The choir
went around visiting our Christian families, singing carols and
ushering in Christmas.
- Pius Fernandes
Loyola School, Jamshedpur
Our School’s Annual Sports Day was conducted on 11 December
at JRD Sports Complex. Mr. Manish Sharma, the MD of Jusco, was the
Chief Guest. Cheetah House emerged over-all winners.
“Tamanna” ‘the symphony of love’, a musical concert for
the people of Jamshedpur was organized on 18 December at XLRI
Auditorium.
The school celebrated Christmas on 22 for the students. It
indeed enthralled all and all burst into laughter when they saw the
modern Santa with a bag full of gifts on a light green motor bike.
The modern Santa in fact dashed through the crowds giving away
gifts and sweets to all. Comparatively a large number of guests
and well wishers came to wish us all a merry Christmas on 25 and
26 respectively.
The community is getting ready for the much awaited
spiritual celebration of the Ordination of the 6 deacons on 29
December 2010.
Cyril, our PP, is full of smiles for he is getting a new Loyola
Prayer Hall, well furnished with modern facilities, for his parish
needs from 1 January 2011. Begin 2011 well, Cyril!
Rutungia
The months of October and November saw us busy with
various activities. Isidore made his annual retreat in HLC during
the Puja holidays and came back with an enlightened heart and
mind. The much-awaited Youth Programme began with nearly 105
young boys and girls from different villages of St. Xavier’s
Rutungia Parish from16 to 18 October. There were youth from all
walks of life – the literate and the illiterate- taking an active role.
The Deacons Jyoti Ranjan and Valerian Mendonca were the main
organizers of this programme. The resource persons were Fr.
Sanathan Pradhan, St. Paul’s Minor Seminary, Baliguda, Bene
Kujur and Sr. Blessy Jojo FCC from St. Xavier’s Health Center,
Rutungia. Anthres the Parish Priest and Sr. Mary Matthew FCC,
Asst. Youth in-Charge also were present to conduct smoothly
the programme. Inputs on different themes were given to motivate
them to come together and work together as a group. Isidore
attended the special seminar on RTI (Right to Information) and
RTE (Right to Education) in Jharsuguda where more than hundred
priests and nuns were present. The preparation for the upcoming
Sports Day is in full swing. It will be held from 22 to 23 December.
- Henry Albert
Upasana, Mango
Thirteen Central Zone Deacons – six from Jamshedpur –
who after completing a five-day course on Basic Accounting and
Finance under Alex, a three-day liturgical preparation with Jerry
and an Eight-Day Spiritual Exercises under the direction of Bp.
Em. Pascal Topno, SJ, left with a fine disposition and preparedness
for their ordination. Congratulations, young men and best wishes
in your new ministry as Priests!
During the course of the month we had a number of Jesuits
from Orissa as well as Jamshedpur who came for their annual
retreat, enjoyed the peace and calm at Upasana and left with a
renewed spirit. The last three SCJM Sisters came from Mercy
Hospital and were guided by R. Tonyraj. Many are welcome to
follow in their footsteps.
On 15 December we received Fr. Biju from Shimla-Chandigarh
Diocese and Fr. Cyril D’silva from Mexico City who came to make
their thirty-day-Spiritual. Exercises under Carl Dincher. They are
well settled and enjoying this journey with the Lord.
We are looking forward to having the women Religious
Superiors – our Partners in Mission – who are coming to reflect
with our Provincial, Mike T Raj, on their collaboration with the
Jesuits in different areas of the province on 8 and 9 January,
Thereafter, we will be having Dick McHugh and his team
for the much awaited NLP course during the month of January-
February with the addition of a third course – Tools of the Spirit.
A good number of Jesuits are participating in this programme.
Welcome, Dick along with all the participants!
XITE
November and December were quite a happening months
for XITE in many senses. On November 29 2010, Augustine,
Director XITE, received the first instalment of the donation for
the college building from the Tata Steel, MD, Mr Nerurkar at the
Corporate Centre, Jamshedpur.
On December 3, 2010 we celebrated the St. Francis Xavier’s
Feast, also as our institute’s Feast Day. The Vicar General of our
diocese, Fr C.R. Prabhu, was the main celebrant for the solemn
Mass as well as the Chief Guest for the cultural program thereafter.
The students of XITE came up with prayer dances, cultural dances,
songs and a much appreciated skit on the life of St. Xavier, scripted
and directed by Joe.
On December 6, 2010 evening XITE community hosted a
farewell dinner in honour of our visiting professor Sirinus, who
taught HR to the third year students of XITE for the last 2 years.
We were honoured to have the presence of Fathers from Bishop’s
House, Loyola School, St. Mary’s Church, Bistupur and Bishop
Felix Toppo, above all.
December 13, 2010 was one of the memorable days on the
XITE calendar this year as our Provincial, Fr Mike, came for
visitation on that day. He met the students and the staff of XITE
besides, of course, meeting the Jesuits at XITE. As usual the
Provincial’s visit was a day of grace for all of us here at XITE. We
were encouraged by his presence and support.
One of the historic days of this year for XITE was the
“Bhoomi Pujan” (land blessing) in the new XITE campus for
setting up XLRI’s EDC (Entrepreneurship Development Centre).
C.L. George, XLRI Superior, blessed the land. Prior to the land
blessing the XLRI Director, Abraham, in his address, shared the
aim and vision of EDC and stressed the usefulness of it in an
industrial area like Gamharia.
Now that the land matters are more or less settled with
IAIDA, Augustine, our Director has changed his direction and
put his attention towards Project Building, Ranchi. His frequent
visits to Ranchi have borne some fruits. In his recent visit to
Ranchi Augustine brought some good news for XITE, very
especially, hostel boys as the proposal for boys’ hostel building
has been approved. However, Augustine was not at all pleased
because he had applied for 100 bed hostel but got the nod only
for 50 bed boys hostel. Now he is trying for the girls’ hostel too.
As this news goes to the Editor, he is off to Ranchi again. Good
work, Gus!
In spite of being busy with the official work and full time
teaching in the institute, Gilbert, our Principal, at the request of
Fr Siju, the Principal of St. Francis English Medium School,
Seraikela, managed to make some time for a trip to Sini school for
the Parents’ Meeting-cum- Annual Day.
Joe made a couple of visits to dentist Dr. Waren Liu at
Mango. He also convened the SAC-MEC follow-up program at
Loyola School for all the Jesuits in and around Jamshedpur city.
Like every year, this year too XITE Mass centre, arranged a
Christmas “Milan and Bhoj” for all the Christian denominations in
and around Gamharia. Altogether 120 people participated in it. Fr
Chonhas Khalkho, PP St. Mary’s Church, Bistupur, was the Chief
Guest for the occasion. The institute is closed till January 3, 2011.
This month Augustine Surin made his retreat at XITE. He
was the third person to make his retreat after Tony P. in October
and Renny in December respectively. The last person to make his
retreat this year at XITE is Jerry Kujur from XLRI. Individual
Jesuits are welcome to XITE to spend some quiet time for rest,
recollection, retreat, etc.
- Joseph Surin
XLRI
Joe Kalathil, Sirinus and George went with Mike to
Chaira for the inauguration of the Health Care Centre. Loyola
School, Chaira, the second largest campus in the Province, is a
symbol of what Jesuit commitment and hard work can achieve
to provide good education and health care to poor villagers.
Now Chaira has an excellent school with a high academic
standard, hostels for boys and girls, a convent and a good
Health Care Centre. Congratulations to Walter Kongari, the
founder, and to the many Jesuits who came after him and worked
hard to build up the school that it is today. I am certain your
new Outreach Centre in the most isolated and one of the poorest
villages, Rerua, will be even larger and better, thanks to your
vision, commitment and hard work and the support you receive
from many benefactors.
After the inauguration, George went to XIMB with Abe
and Ed McGrath. While Abe and George along, Tony Uvari worked
on the procedural formalities regarding the acquiring of the 35
acres of land for XLRI, Bhubaneswar, Ed McGrath met his friends
and students of HLC and XIMB.
The feast of St. Francis Xavier was celebrated with great
solemnity and festivity. In the morning, we had a solemn Mass
in the Institute Chapel presided over by John Guidera. The
whole community concelebrated. Emile gave an inspiring homily
on “go and set the whole world on fire”. The choir led by Emile
and Sirinus was outstanding. Several faculty, staff, students
and friends of the institute attended the Mass. It was followed
by breakfast for all. In the evening, we had a special dinner for
the faculty and staff with their families in the brilliantly lit
Diamond Jubilee Park of XLRI. On 4 December we had a special
lunch for the maintenance staff and the outsourced workers
and on 5 th a grand dinner for the clergy and religious working in
and around Jamshedpur and on the 7 th a sumptuous lunch for all
the construction workers working on the expansion project of
XLRI. Emile conducted an appropriate and a moving prayer
service with power point presentation of scenes from the life of
St. Francis Xavier for each group before the meals. It was highly
appreciated by all. Emile’s Hindi song “ye dosti hum nahi
todenge…” for the maintenance staff and the construction
workers moved them to tears and made them feel that they are
also part of the extended XLRI family. The students were given
special dinner. Panka, the Associate Dean for student affairs,
sent an online message to all students describing the values
cherished by St. Francis Xavier. In all these celebrations, the
message of excellence in everything we do, the obligation to
reach out to the poor and needy and the need for impeccable
personal integrity and honesty was accentuated.
Abe organized a 4 day training programme for the CRS
Directors (Diocesan Priests) of the Dioceses of Bihar and
Jharkhand. It was highly appreciated by all the participants.
After completing his teaching assignment, Raj went to Nairobi
to visit his close family relations and for a short break. George
went to Ranchi to attend a meeting called by the Fee Fixing
Committee of Jharkhand. Congratulations to George Hess for
his latest book, “Once Upon a Time.” It is an interesting and
inspiring book. Panka organized a Christmas play and carol
singing with the help of the campus children to convey the
message of Christmas. It was attended by the faculty, staff and
students. Emile made two trips to Dhanbad to give a retreat to
the Catholic students of De Nobili School and for vocation
promotion. Manu made a flash visit to Hazaribagh to consult
Mathew Naikaparambil who was conducting a charismatic retreat
there, on holistic healing process. Paul Fernandes came to give a
course in Business Ethics and Corporate Social Responsibility to
the second year students. James Santhanam made a flying visit
to XLRI to renew his old contacts and celebrate Christmas. Once
again, we welcome Tony Uvari to the community of XLRI and
wish him many years of fruitful and satisfying mission at XLRI.
We had the eggnog toast on Christmas morning for the
faculty, staff with their families and the VIPs of the city and friends
of the institute to exchange Christmas greetings. It brought out
the Christmas spirit of sharing, peace, joy and happiness.
After Christmas, we had the reunion of the Silver Jubilee
Batch of Alumni here for two days. They were extremely happy to
see the wonderful changes that have taken place after they passed
out of XLRI. After the alumni reunion, the community dispersed
to conduct the Admissions Test (XAT)in different parts of the
country.
- C L George
Bellarmino
In the month of November we had a day of Recollection and
Renewal of our Vows, which happily coincided with the visit of the
Delegate of Roman Houses, Fr. Joseph Doust. He had a patient ear
for each of the 68 of us, from about more than 30 countries.
University life is getting more intense with various courses on
Ignatian and general spirituality. The seminars and the final thesis
that I have to submit for the year-end keep me busy.
In the second week of December we celebrated the feast of
Guadalupe, the patron of the Mexican Sisters here. It was a day
much awaited for the entire community to tickle their taste buds
with a variety of delicacies from the Mexican platter. Later on
before all left in all directions for the Christmas break we had the
get-together to wish everyone and exchange gifts. That evening
was filled with carols in different languages and some tried a few
steps to the tunes of many languages.
For Christmas week I was away in a Sanctuary of Mother
Mary near Milan hearing confessions, day after day for a week.
The Ambrosian rite liturgy and the new environment made the
Christmas celebrations interesting. It was also a good chance to
have more pastoral experience for me. But Christmas was not a
white Christmas - without snow, though it began snowing after
we left the place.
