Scholastics' Summer Programme 2002
The programme kicked off with the driving course at LPG, Chaibasa. Under the able guidance of
Fr Mike T Raj, 10 new drivers were given training. Thanks to Fr Mike and the LPG
Community for giving us the resources and their kind service.
On 20th evening, the "Villa Trip" took off from Loyola Hall for Jilling and on arrival Fr James
Kalapura and his Community gave us a warm welcome to the 60 plus Scholastics. During the
fun-filled five days we witnessed creative liturgy, interactive games and enjoyable sessions.
"Coolant Sattu" was served regularly to beat the summer heat.
Fr Provincial came on the 24th with rain. The encouraging presence of our PCF and the
informative sessions on Legal Aid by Fr T Nelli were enriching and fruitful.
Fr J Surin, our young and vibrant villa Superior and Br B Kichingia re-lived their younger
years with us and enjoyed the fun. No wonder, Bene expressed his desire to become a priest at
the evaluation session!
The cultural evening on 24th was a wonderful example of creativity of the Scholastics. Our
coordinators, Schs Ajit Bahala and Rakesh Kandulna, deserve a pat on the back for their
painstaking efforts to make the Villa a big success. The kitchen team led by Gulshan, Gerald
and Somy too deserves our gratitude for serving delicious food. Schs Sunny, Anselem,
Sylverius and Peter Martin have been chosen to be the Coordinators for the SP '03.
Finally, the Scholastics made their retreat in two groups - one at Upasana, guided by Frs George
Anthony and John Mundu and the other at XLRI, guided by Frs James Kalapura and Joseph
Kalathoor. A big thanks to all of them, especially Fr James Kalapura, our Provincial designate
for making our Villa at Jilling a memorable one.
News From Houses
On 10 May, Hindi and English medium De Nobili Schools closed for the summer vacation and
this gave the opportunity for Fr Panneer and Fr Joe Anthony to go at full-speed with their
maintenance work. Fr Joe has given a new look to the Hindi School; the well too was cleaned
thoroughly. Fr Panneer has fixed up everything on the campus.
20 students along with two teachers from the Main School visited Shimla and Manali. The
students liked it so much that they could not believe that Shimla is a part of India.
Fr Woolsie was fully involved with the Scholastics' Programme till 2 June after which he made
his annual retreat at XLRI.
Fr K C Anthony made a quick visit to Ranchi to attend the Province Gathering in the month of
May and is now actively engaged in the mission of creating and Eden Garden at Chandankiyari.
A boundary wall is erected, bore-well is dug and trees are being planted in plenty.
On 18 June, at 8.14 am, when planets and stars were at a favourable position, Fr Joe handed
over his office to George Joseph. Fr Woolsie introduced George to Hindi School staff and
students. Fr Stan Kujur was similarly introduced at the Main School. Sch Anselem has begun
his work; the library is taking a new shape under his leadership.
Fr Joe went to Kolkata for an eye check-up. He will undergo the necessary treatment in the near
future.
Gande Dungri
- George Joseph
Congratulations to the staff and students of St Thomas School, Gande Dungri for the excellent
matric results of the very first batch (8 boys, 4 girls) - 6 first divisions, (4 girls); 5 second; 1
failed.
LCE
On 1 and 2 May, an orientation programme was conducted by Dr C B Sharma of the IGNOU
School of Education for 12 Counsellors of the B Ed Programme Study Centre at LCE. Most of
the Counsellors were the faculty members of the College.
In the first week of May all the Scholastics left the place after the completion of their course and
Victor went to Calcutta for a meeting of the JEA.
The local newspapers published a notification of Ranchi University announcing the termination
of affiliation of all the three NCTE recognised Christian B Ed Colleges in Jharkhand, including
LCE. Victor is actively pursuing the renewal of affiliation with the University and HRD
Ministry. Meanwhile, the admission process for the fresh batch has been completed. The classes
for this batch will begin from 1 July.
A twelve day workshop was conducted from 27 May to 8 June at LCE by the faculty memberscum-counsellors
for IGNOUS B Ed students. Gilbert, as the Director of the workshop, saw that
all the 85 students who attended the mandatory workshop had a pleasant learning experience.
Mrs Sarita Sahay has been appointed a new faculty member.
Victor is busy attending to the various maintenance work of the College before the new session
begins.
Loyola Bhavan
- Gilbert D'Souza
Come summer and most of the Jesuits are on the move. Loyola Bhavan and HLC were not
exception. First Joe Njara attended a tertian-instructors course at Shembag. Robert Sequeira
went to Bangalore. The junior Sequeira, Jerome, followed him and made his home-visit to
Mangalore. But before that he conducted a computer crash course for eight Scholastics who were
at HLC for an intensive 12 day Oriya course. That kept them really busy. The new member of
LB, Joe Surin, too moved to Chaibasa for a ten day driving course. There to his surprise, he
came to know he was to be the Villa Superior in Jilling. Frs Jerry Kujur, Oscar and McGrath
held the fort at LB and HLC. Jerry supervised the repairs and maintenance at LB, all through the
hot season.
Meanwhile, Fr McGrath conducted a course for the government doctors at XIMB. Joe Surin
made a trip to Deepti Bhavan to give orientation and team-building course to the candidates.
Oscar says, "640 students joined for Spoken English course for the May-August session".
Loyola Communications, Bhubaneswar
- Joe Surin
Communications personnel Joseph Surin and George Hess have moved to Loyola Bhavan
which is at close to 100% occupancy with five residents.
The office of the Centre is located in a rented building, C8 BJB Nagar, close to the old town
area. Signboards help in directing visitors to the site identified as Loyola Centre for
Communications and Culture. Classes in several media fields are being held. More areas for our
expertise are being explored. Visitors are welcome.
Communications notice: Jain TV has launched, on 16 June, its long planned programme on its
channel for Christian Community called in English 'Voice of Christianity' and in Hindi, 'Eesa ke
Log'. This will be broadcast every Sunday starting 16 June between 6 to 6.30 pm. It is a
programme prepared by the Christians, for the Christians and of the Christians.
The Communications/Information Bureau of CBCI welcomes feedback and programme theme
suggestions.
Loyola School, Bhubaneswar
- George A Hess
The scorching summer looked like a spring time at Loyola with the inauguration of the Summer
Camp 2002 at our School premises. A few enthusiastic teachers volunteered to coordinate and
conduct the programme. The Camp was run for a month from 4 May to 7 June with three
batches, each having ten days of fun and action. The campus bloomed with creativity as the 302
children were busy with clay modelling, cooking, painting, drama, public speaking, computer,
multimedia video shows and yoga. All the students enjoyed the Camp. Their parents had a
glimpse of it as some of the activities were telecast in Oriya TV and published in local
newspapers.
The outgoing member of the Community, Fr John Karuvelil, went for a month long home visit
before he set off to his promised land, Pune, on 18 June. The teachers and the students waved
and the sky wept as he left the School. Sch Staney Furtado bid the School farewell in May after
a year as the Vice Principal. He goes to RTC, Patna for Theology. Adieu dear John and Staney.
Amidst his busy schedule, Fr Tony P took some time out to pay a visit to his dear and near ones.
Fr Victor Joseph guarded the House.
Loyola teachers had a workshop for four days, 10-13 June, at the Centre for Youth and Social
Development (CYSD) with Fr Daniel, SVD and Fr Mike T Raj as the resource persons.
The School reopened on 17 June and counts 900+ children on its rolls.
Before going to Vidya Jyoti, Sch Ajit is spending a few days with us creatively utilising his
teaching skills as he is still fresh from his B Ed studies. Wish you all the best Ajit!
The visit of Fr Charlie and Fr James on 20 June was much appreciated.
Mrs Sudha and Mrs Reena, two of our maths teachers, were deputed to Jamshedpur to study the
working of the maths/reading labs at LFS, DBMS and Loyola. They spent a couple of days
interacting with the experienced teachers.
Mr B Muthuraman, Managing Director, Tata Steel, inaugurated the "Millennium Storey" on 2
May 2002. In his brief speech, Mr Muthuraman urged the children to have a clear vision of the
future. Rector Vatta presented the Chief Guest a silver plaque as a memento. The Junior School
is now "complete" - can accommodate all the classes and sections which used to be held in
makeshift rooms.
During the summer vacation, the House looked deserted with members of the Community
disappearing for a much-needed break. Felix and Eddie made their retreat in the House itself. Br
Maxi looked after the various repair work and painting of the School and took care of the guests.
Peter Martin, our new Regent, and Sebastian, our Vice-Principal, were given a warm welcome
by the Community.
Our Parish Priest, Bernard Surin, celebrated St Anthony's Feast Day Mass on 13 June at
Carmel. Heavy rain lashed during the procession and dampened the spirit somewhat.
Our ex-PP, Stan Kujur, made a brief halt, en route to Dhanbad, to meet his old parishioners. He
is happy that our new PP Bernard is carrying on the traditions and managing the Parish well.
Is Swami, our Socius, on a long distant journey? It sounds difficult to believe, as goes out of
station rarely. During this summer vacation he went for a double celebration. First for his eldest
brother's Golden Wedding Anniversary in Coimbatore plus his own Golden Jubilee in the
Society and secondly to Madurai Province to be with his 1952 novitiate companions at Dhyana
Ashram, Chennai. The 13 Jubilarians spent two days together recollecting and recalling their
nostalgic 50 years in the Society and how God was walking with them every moment and
sometimes even carrying them in all these years. Loyola College, Chennai hosted a sumptuous
dinner in honour of them.
After returning to the Province, Swami taught Santhali to the pre-Novices before they entered
the Novitiate on 30 June. As the proof of the pudding is in the eating, Swami and his disciples
went to Jisu Jaher, Dalbhumgarh, a Santhali village, to celebrate Mass and to practice Santhali
with the villagers. The Pilgrims returned in the evening by the over-crowded and late running
locals. Swami has quiet a satisfaction that his Santhali is still not outdated.
All the 151 ICSE boys sailed through the Board exams and 14 failed out of the 212 who
appeared in ISC 2002.
Loyola conducted the Frank Anthony Memorial Inter-School Debate on 29 April on behalf of the
Council. Selected Schools from Orissa and Jharkhand participated. Little Flower School took
away the trophy and Loyola came a close 2nd.
Saby was in Mercy with viral flu. Br Maxi and Pius were the next victims but they preferred to
get well at home.
We have come to the end of the academic year. Our Intermediate exams got over a month ago.
The first years are now busy preparing for the promotion tests. The Plus II candidates are still
improving their knowledge of English and the ability to write well and pronounce correctly. We
worked hard to prepare a one-act play in English "Half An Hour At The Tomb". It was
successfully staged on 1 Mary. Among the audience were Fr Provincial, some of the Fathers
and Brothers from Loyola and Jesu Bhavan and our special guests who came for the Vocation
Camp. The audience really appreciated and praised our efforts. On 21 April, we had gone to
Gande Dungri for an outing; we had great fun in playing volleyball and cricket with the students.
We are grateful to Fr Kosga and Sch Thomas for the warm welcome and hospitality given to us.
Thereafter, we visited XLRI, TISCO and Sudha Dairy to enrich our lives.
Vocation Camp
- Santosh and Julian
This year we had 86 enthusiastic boys from 45 parishes of 11 Dioceses of Jharkhand, Orissa and
Chhattisgarh for the VC at Loyola Hall. Fr Hilarius Kongari, with a solemn Mass, inaugurated
the Camp on 2 May. From the first day itself, Fr Julian and his team conducted a very hectic
programme but the campers enjoyed and cooperated. The most enriching aspect of the camp was
the inspired talks given by various speakers and the visits to Pratiksha, the Cathedral, Jesu
Bhavan, the Dimna Lake and the Jubilee Park. Inspired by the Lord, a good number of the
campers expressed their desire to join Jamshedpur. 21 were selected for the Province and 17 for
the Diocese. Together with Frs Julian, Rocky, Manu, Francis, Deacon Sunil, Sch Gerry and
Seminarian Felix, we express our gratitude to Loyola Community and all those who helped in
making the VC a big success.
Rugudisai
- Blacius and Julian
Joe Surin, after preaching retreats at Joda, Borbil, Pal Laharo and Sharat, left for Bhubaneswar.
I am safe and sound all alone now. Police personnel are alert and vigilant. If anything happens
anywhere to the church, they come to Rugudisai instantly.
The villagers again offered us their 'dakhal' land (not patta land), about 15-20 acres for the
School. The parents are happy about the School. They decided and built a School building on
their own in the middle of the piece of land. "If we do not do anything, the forest land will
remain forest and our children will remain monkeys", they said! From 12 July the classes will be
run there.

XIMB
Thanks to Wency's gracious help, we had a very relaxing and refreshing Community quinzaine.
He introduced Pizza into the Community. People from XLRI, Provincial and all the
Communities from Bhubaneswar and the Scholastics doing their computer programme at HLC
came for dinner during the quinzaine. Eric generously provided everything. Thank you Wency
for your gracious help.
George Hess was given a send off on 11 May. In his homily, he highlighted that one can always
find something productive to do if one has the right mindset and willingness to do. Age is no bar!
Abe, Gus Ezha, Jerry Kujur and George had a special Mass and celebration here to mark the
20 years of their priesthood. We missed Bishop Felix and Victor Misquith on the occasion.
Abe, after attending the alumni meetings in Mumbai and Delhi, proceeded to Taipei to attend a
conference organised by the International Association of Jesuit Business Schools. He was again
elected to the Board of Directors of IAJBS. From there, he and Romuald D'Souza went to
Bangkok to attend the World Forum of Management.
At the request of Beijing University, George went to Beijing to finalise modalities for an
academic collaboration with the Beijing International MBA programme run by a consortium of
American Jesuit Business Schools. It is managed by Fr Ron Anton from Loyola College,
Baltimore.
With the additional responsibility as Treasurer of Loyola Educational Society, Eric works
double shift to meet deadlines for the demanding job of teaching Organisational behaviour and
Library-in-Charge of XIMB.
Clement was too busy during the summer trying to get the Baripada land purchase deal all
cleared. Now he is busy planting trees and making other plans for putting up infrastructure
facilities for running various training programmes there.
Gyan, through his sheer hard work and meticulous planning made the CENDERET-Regional
Resource Centre at Koraput viable. He runs several relevant and productive developmental
projects and conducts a large number of effective training programmes in the area.
In the month of May, we had the ground-breaking ceremony for our auditorium. The whole
campus gathered together as a family for this function. It will be an 800-seater air-conditioned
auditorium. Several offices and two large classrooms are also planned in the same complex. We
hope to complete and use the auditorium for the annul convocation in March 2003.
Thanks to Raj's help, our classrooms, library and the administration building are decorated with
beautiful pictures with captivating captions. Thank you Raj for your help. During this summer,
we also air-conditioned all the classrooms, offices and reading rooms in the library.
The academic year was inaugurated on 14 June. In his inaugural address, Abe highlighted the
uniqueness of XIMB as a Business School and accentuated the importance of our socially
relevant projects run by CENDERET for the development of the poorest of the poor in Orissa.
We have taken 120 students for the regular MBA programme, 42 for Rural Management, 50 for
the Executive MBA and another 30 for a special three-year weekend MBA programme. XIMB is
pioneer in starting this special three-year weekend MBA programme.
VIPs like Charlie, James Kalapura, PD, Raj, James Santhanam, Victor Joseph, Pius and
Oscar Rodericks made flying visits to XIMB.
XLRI
- George C L
By the end of May, the Community had reassembled from various destinations. Fr Ignatius
came back from Germany with health improved. Theo returned after sessions in Singapore,
combined with R & R. Sadly, the Superior, Fr Augustine, who had gone to Kerala had to
witness the sudden passing away of his eldest brother. Raj and Joe Puli were both busy as usual
with important work outside. The only one who faithfully guarded the House was Fr E Welch to
whom all of us feel grateful. We were also allotted a new member of the Community Fr Hilary
Lobo who was duly welcomed.
In June, PD went to Taipei and Beijing to attend the International Conference of Jesuit Business
Schools. In Beijing, he attended a business meeting with the Director and the Deans of the
Beijing International MBA Programme (BIMBA) of the Peking University. This programme is a
joint venture with a consortium of 26 US Jesuit Universities and it is the foremost postgraduate
business programme in China. The degree will be conferred by Fordham University. From this
year BIMBA will become global and XLRI will collaborate through faculty exchange.
PD returned shortly before opening of the new academic year for the Juniors on 15 June.
Naturally, he had plenty to recount about far east Asia, the astonishing development of Taiwan
and the new dynamism being displayed by China which had forsaken its communism, at least
where the economy is concerned. The results of this change are evident to all.
PD has been appointed one of the four members of the Apex Committee of the Department of
Institutional Finance and Programme Implementation of the Government of Jharkhand. The
purpose of this committee is to evaluate Tribal Development and Urban Development projects of
the State which are funded by the World Bank and other international agencies.
On 14 June, 130 eager new faces could be seen, exploring the nooks and corners of the campus.
These were the new batches of BM and PM and IR for whom the academic year was inaugurated
on 15 June and formally initiated by the Director on 17th.
In the meantime, our House always had, at least, two Jesuits, making their retreat. Fortunately,
all have been keeping well and so our life of work and prayer continues.
- Theo Mathias
PG Programme for Educational Leadership
On 12 June, with the completion of the first contact programme of eighteen days, of the Post
Graduate Programme for Educational Leadership at XLRI, many firsts were achieved. This is the
first programme of its kind in India; the first offered by a Business School in India; and the first
in South Asia, as a follow up of the International Jesuit Educational Leadership Project.
There were nine participants (seven priests and two nuns) all Adivasis from Jharkhand and this is
another first - for Jharkhand! Thanks to hard team work put in by Hilary Lobo, Gautam
Chaudhury and Joe Saldanha, the first contact session was completed successfully.
- Joe Saldanha
In preparation for the 450th anniversary of St Francis Xavier's death at Sancian (3 December
1552), some short texts from the Saint's letters, focussing on his inner life and spirituality will be
given every month, thanks to Fr Etienne N Degrez.
The oldest extant letter of Francis Xavier, written a few months after taking the vows of poverty
and chastity at Montmartre, is addressed to his elder brother, Juan de Azpilcueta (25 March
1535). Rumours of Ignatius' 'unorthodoxy' have reached home, and Xavier feels the need of
telling his brother how Ignatius changed his life, and so much for the better. No one know him
better, and helped him more, than Ignatius. On a convalescence trip to his home country,
Ignatius visited Xavier's brother.
"In order that your Grace may clearly know what a great favour our Lord has done to me by
having me come to know Lord Master Ignatius, I give you my word of honour through this letter
that I shall never, as long as I live, be able to repay the great debt which I owe him, both for his
having frequently assisted me in my needs with money and friends, and for having been the
reason why I abandoned some evil companions whom I, through lack of experience, did not
recognise as such. (...)
I earnestly entreat you not to fail to converse freely with Lord Ignatius and to believe what he
tells you. His advice and conversation can be of great advantage to you, since he is a great man
of God and of a very good life. I again ask you as a favour not to fail to do this; and whatever
Lord Master Ignatius will tell Your Grace on my behalf, do me the favour of giving as much
credit to him as you would do to me in person. Your Grace can learn more about my deeds and
difficulties from him than from any other person in the world, for he knows more about my
poverty and wretchedness than anyone else in the world."
