- John Sumbrui XIMB Thanks to Wency's gracious help, we had a very relaxing and refreshing Community quinzaine. He introduced Pizza into the Community. People from XLRI, Provincial and all the Communities from Bhubaneswar and the Scholastics doing their computer programme at HLC came for dinner during the quinzaine. Eric generously provided everything. Thank you Wency for your gracious help. George Hess was given a send off on 11 May. In his homily, he highlighted that one can always find something productive to do if one has the right mindset and willingness to do. Age is no bar! Abe, Gus Ezha, Jerry Kujur and George had a special Mass and celebration here to mark the 20 years of their priesthood. We missed Bishop Felix and Victor Misquith on the occasion. Abe, after attending the alumni meetings in Mumbai and Delhi, proceeded to Taipei to attend a conference organised by the International Association of Jesuit Business Schools. He was again elected to the Board of Directors of IAJBS. From there, he and Romuald D'Souza went to Bangkok to attend the World Forum of Management. At the request of Beijing University, George went to Beijing to finalise modalities for an academic collaboration with the Beijing International MBA programme run by a consortium of American Jesuit Business Schools. It is managed by Fr Ron Anton from Loyola College, Baltimore. With the additional responsibility as Treasurer of Loyola Educational Society, Eric works double shift to meet deadlines for the demanding job of teaching Organisational behaviour and Library-in-Charge of XIMB. Clement was too busy during the summer trying to get the Baripada land purchase deal all cleared. Now he is busy planting trees and making other plans for putting up infrastructure facilities for running various training programmes there. Gyan, through his sheer hard work and meticulous planning made the CENDERET-Regional Resource Centre at Koraput viable. He runs several relevant and productive developmental projects and conducts a large number of effective training programmes in the area. In the month of May, we had the ground-breaking ceremony for our auditorium. The whole campus gathered together as a family for this function. It will be an 800-seater air-conditioned auditorium. Several offices and two large classrooms are also planned in the same complex. We hope to complete and use the auditorium for the annul convocation in March 2003. Thanks to Raj's help, our classrooms, library and the administration building are decorated with beautiful pictures with captivating captions. Thank you Raj for your help. During this summer, we also air-conditioned all the classrooms, offices and reading rooms in the library.
The academic year was inaugurated on 14 June. In his inaugural address, Abe highlighted the uniqueness of XIMB as a Business School and accentuated the importance of our socially relevant projects run by CENDERET for the development of the poorest of the poor in Orissa. We have taken 120 students for the regular MBA programme, 42 for Rural Management, 50 for the Executive MBA and another 30 for a special three-year weekend MBA programme. XIMB is pioneer in starting this special three-year weekend MBA programme. VIPs like Charlie, James Kalapura, PD, Raj, James Santhanam, Victor Joseph, Pius and Oscar Rodericks made flying visits to XIMB. XLRI - George C L By the end of May, the Community had reassembled from various destinations. Fr Ignatius came back from Germany with health improved. Theo returned after sessions in Singapore, combined with R & R. Sadly, the Superior, Fr Augustine, who had gone to Kerala had to witness the sudden passing away of his eldest brother. Raj and Joe Puli were both busy as usual with important work outside. The only one who faithfully guarded the House was Fr E Welch to whom all of us feel grateful. We were also allotted a new member of the Community Fr Hilary Lobo who was duly welcomed. In June, PD went to Taipei and Beijing to attend the International Conference of Jesuit Business Schools. In Beijing, he attended a business meeting with the Director and the Deans of the Beijing International MBA Programme (BIMBA) of the Peking University. This programme is a joint venture with a consortium of 26 US Jesuit Universities and it is the foremost postgraduate business programme in China. The degree will be conferred by Fordham University. From this year BIMBA will become global and XLRI will collaborate through faculty exchange. PD returned shortly before opening of the new academic year for the Juniors on 15 June. Naturally, he had plenty to recount about far east Asia, the astonishing development of Taiwan and the new dynamism being displayed by China which had forsaken its communism, at least where the economy is concerned. The results of this change are evident to all. PD has been appointed one of the four members of the Apex Committee of the Department of Institutional Finance and Programme Implementation of the Government of Jharkhand. The purpose of this committee is to evaluate Tribal Development and Urban Development projects of the State which are funded by the World Bank and other international agencies. On 14 June, 130 eager new faces could be seen, exploring the nooks and corners of the campus. These were the new batches of BM and PM and IR for whom the academic year was inaugurated on 15 June and formally initiated by the Director on 17th. In the meantime, our House always had, at least, two Jesuits, making their retreat. Fortunately, all have been keeping well and so our life of work and prayer continues.
