On 11 March, His Holiness John Paul II will beatify a large group of priests, religious men and
women, and lay people, who suffered martyrdom for Christ during the Spanish Civil War in the
Diocese of Valencia. Among these are eleven Jesuits (seven priests and four brothers) and one
lay man closely related to the Society, who gave the supreme witness to their faith between the
months of July and December of 1936.
The Jesuits belonged to the territory of what was at that time the Province of Aragon: they were
seven fathers and four brothers: Fr Thomas Sitjar Fortia (1866-1936), Fr Constantino Carbonell
Sempere (1866-1936), Br Pedro Gelabert Amer (1887-1936), Br Ramon Grimaltos Monllor
(1861-1936), Fr Pablo Bori Puig (1864-1936), Br Vicente Sales Genoves (1881-1936), Br Jose
Tarrats Comaposada (1878-1936), Fr Dario Hernandez Morato (1880-1936), Fr Narciso Baste
Baste (1866-1936), Fr Alfredo Simon Colomina (1877-1936) and Fr Juan Bautista Ferreres
Boluda (1861-1936). Mr Luis Campos Gorriz (1905-1936) was a former student, a member of
the Marian Congregation, and the national director of Catholic Action.
Ordination
On 11 February, the Province was blessed with a new priest in the person of Fr Cyril Tigga,
who was ordained by our own Bishop, Rt Rev Felix Toppo, SJ, at Lohardaga., On his arrival on
10th evening, the Bishop was welcomed by the parishioners. All the people from Jamshedpur
were accommodated by our brothers at St Stanislaus. In the evening, the Tigga family invited us
for dinner. The Province was well represented at the Ordination, 50 in all - 30 Jesuits and the
rest, the people from Tepasai. The next day, the ordination ceremony started at 8 in the morning.
Just before the ceremony, Fr Cyril was brought to the parish in a 'doli' with traditional 'gaja-baja'
and then all the priests were taken in procession to the altar. The Fathers, Sisters and students
from various institutions combined well to provide a beautiful choir for the occasion. The
ordination ceremony got over at 10.30. Before the end of the Mass, Fr Cyril thanked all who
helped and guided him to reach this goal of priesthood. After the ordination, the 'Swagat'
followed, during which, the Bishop and the Provincial's delegate were presented with a big
'khasi' by Fr Cyril's family members. Both the Bishop and the delegate thanked the parishioners
for their generosity towards Jamshedpur Province. Last year they had given us Fr Julian and this
year Fr Cyril Tigga.
We the collegians at Clive's entered into the new year with a renovating triduum. Fr Joe, the
Socius to Madurai Province, dealt with the challenges of our time and inspired us to renew our
commitment to the Lord and His people.
After the triduum, with a new spirit we celebrated 'Pongal' together with the Scholastics doing
the post graduate studies.
The visitation of our Provincial was the main event in February. He was with us for a day.
Reminding our commitment to the Lord, he explained to us, the 'Magis'. He also shared with us
The Jesuit Scholastics from the Regional Theologate, Khaspur, Patna, were the resource persons
during the CRI, Patna Unit meeting at Navjyoti Niketan on 14 January 2001. The theme of the
day was "The Energising Hindutva Force, its Challenges and a Christian Response". The
relevance of the topic and the creative way of presenting it, further invitations for more such
Seminars in Patna.
On 30 January, we were part of an all religious prayer meeting at Gandhi Sangrahalaya. It was an
opportunity to interact with eminent secular leaders. From RTC, six Scholastics participated.
We, the first years, went for an Islamic experience: Polidor to Munger, Sushil to Phulwari,
Romanus to Dharbanga and Sunny to Biharsharif. Fr Paul Jackson is our professor of Islam. He
wants us to live with Muslims and experience their way of life.
If an invitation comes from Gujarat, we will go there for relief work.
"Know the RSS" (A study on RSS organisational frame-work), an article by Sunny Jacob, was
published in the "Indian Currents".
The Bagdiggi Colliery tragedy loomed large over the DNS horizon. One boy of the School,
Abhishek Upadhyay, lost his father in the tragedy. Another boy of Std XI lost his father in
Assam. Saleth paid visits to the families of the deceased and offered prayers and condolences.
The Hindi School Sports' Day was held on 4 February. It was a smashing success. Both Gulshan
Kujur and Joe Anthony left no stone unturned to make the day a memorable one. The March
Past was excellent as much practice had gone into making it so.
Woolsie was in Bhubaneswar engaged in spiritual ministries to the MC Sisters at Jaula.
The event of the month was Digwadih-Chandankiyari Parish Day. Gulshan and Sylverius
trained the choir. They saw to the decoration of the altar and stage for Mass, at which Kuru was
the main celebrant. K C Anthony saw to the over-all organisation and did a commendable job.
Joe Anthony preached the sermon. There was a festive meal in which every parishioner shared.
Every member of the DNS Community was in some way or other involved. The whole
programme was a family affair. The people enjoyed the day. They all went home with joyful
hearts.
Fr Provincial and Gilbert D'Souza were with us for a couple of days. And that added to the joy
of the Community.
Robert Sequeira's eldest sister Sr Anne, AC (80) suddenly went to her Heavenly reward on 18
February. The Bishop officiated at the funeral Mass at Sacred Heart and delivered a moving
homily. Robert said the last prayers at the cemetery with moist eyes. A large number of priests
and religious were present.
Alumni doctors and volunteers went for a Free General Health Camp at Rengra on 18 February.
A record number of over 1300 tribals were examined and given medicines. Seeing the
overwhelming response, LAA is planning to have a hernia operations camp very soon there.
The groundwork for the "Millennium Storey" to accommodate an extra section has begun.
Rector Vatta hopes that it will be ready before the Millennium Year ends.
History was made on 13 February, 2001, at 3.00 p.m., when the first girl child in 55 years was
admitted to KG. Incidentally, she happens to be the daughter of an ex-Loyolean, Mr Fasel Pall
(ICSE 1982 batch). Her name is Maryam. Fr Kenna recorded this historic moment "in camera"
for posterity.
The School collected over 1.35 lakhs for the Gujarat earthquake victims. Three alumni members,
with a truckload of essential commodities, went to the worst-hit areas to distribute the relief
materials.
Parish Priest Stan is busy preparing for Lent and spreading the devotion to Infant Jesus among
his parishioners. The number of devotees for the Novena Mass every Thursday is increasing.
It is admission time and Pius is hounded by politicians, police and their ilk. The telephones
requesting a "favour" never stop ringing.
Loyola Coaching Centre admissions are just over. "Applications keep increasing each year", says
Director Bene. Plans are in the offing to start the "Open School Plus Two". Sports Day was
celebrated on 24th with the students' March Past, drill displays and athletic events. Saby was the
official photographer. Great show Bene!
Rich Kenna's ping-pong ball size growth on his right elbow is shrinking without surgery.
Doctors are baffled. It must be Richie's fervent prayers!
Eddy D'Souza has gone "Down Under" to visit his sister and relatives in Australia. Just before
his departure, he developed acute back pain but doctors put him on his feet in 24 hours. We have
received the message that he has arrived there "in one piece".
Tepasai
- Pius Fernandes
St John's new academic year 2001 started on a bright note: "Mass of the Holy Spirit" for the
students. On 21 January, a "Munda-Manki" meeting was arranged by Fr George. We had a
resource person from 'Johar' who spoke of "Gram Sabha and Panchayati Raj". Nearly 64 Munda-
Mankis and neighbouring villagers profitted by his inspiring talk.
On 27 January, we had the first ever dance, song and Nukad competition arranged by TRTC at
Tepasai. The crowd was thrilled, seeing some of the Ho classical dances. Thanks to Fr Jerry of
TRTC and his team who planned and executed the programme. This year "Parish Day" on 4
February was celebrated in a grand style with great joy and enthusiasm. Bishop Felix Toppo
was our main celebrant. During the Holy Eucharist celebration in which 69 children and adults
were confirmed and one couple was married. The OLP Sisters helped out by colourfully
decorating the altar and the backdrop which added to the glitter and pomp. Sch Kishore and
team led the choir. Deacon Cyril planned and executed the day's programme which ended with a
community meal for all the parishioners and guests.
On 11 February, the whole Tepasai Jesuit Community went for Cyril's ordination in Lohardaga.
Tepasai hostelers displayed their talent by their Ho dance which was much appreciated by the
crowd.
Jharkhand State.
XIME and Carmel College. George Hess attended the annual meeting of the Province
Coordinators of Communications held in Kottayam. Eric, after attending Abe's courses in OB-1,
year. He will be attending a one-week communication course next month at IIM, Ahmedabad.
XIM now has an ATM installed by the UTI Bank. The inauguration will be in the first week of
March. UTI will also provide internet banking facility to all its customers. The super structure of
our new MDP building with 35 double seated rooms, 3 luxury suites and all other common
facilities is complete. The whole building will be air-conditioned and all rooms will be wired and
provided with 24-hour internet accessibility through the campus network. A recent write up
about XIM in the Statesman praises the institute for its initiative in IT infrastructure and
commitment to quality education.
The annual Convocation will be held on 12 March at 6.00 pm. It will be followed by dinner for
the guests. All are cordially invited.
XIM-CENDERET has been recently regionalised into the following five regional resource
centres covering the whole of Orissa: XIM-CENDERET Northern, Eastern, Western, Southern
and Central Orissa Resource Centres. With this regionalisation of CENDERET, we hope to make
a qualitative difference in the lives of the poor of Orissa. Already the Western Orissa Resource
Centre has done a massive survey of 432 villages in Bolangir district and has come up with a
thought provoking report and a moving documentary film about the sick and aged men and
women who are facing starvation and death. The findings of this study are quoted by the Indian
Express of 23 February, titled "Migration leaves elders at the mercy of death". The centre has
already appraised the district administration of the grave situation and also sought intervention of
the UN food programme. The other centres too are undertaking similar study.
The Senior School block (30 classrooms and an examination hall) of Loyola Bhubaneswar is
complete. Work on the Junior School building (33 classrooms) is progressing fast. The roof
casting will be done in the second week of March. We are also planning to start the foundation
for the library-cum-lab block and the administration-cum-plus 2 building soon. His grace
Raphael Cheenath, SVD, the Archbishop of Cuttack-Bhubaneswar, has agreed to bless the
School building on 14 March. Classes will begin the next day.
Tony S has been here to help out Tony P, the Principal, to get everything ready to start the
School in March. Besides 18 full time teachers, Tony P has also recruited part time teachers for
music, dance, painting and band. The Kalinga Trade and Travels has agreed to ply 5 brand new
RTV buses equipped with mobile phone and other facilities as per the directives given by the
recent supreme court judgement. The School has also a brand new Deluxe Tata Sumo. The
information technology will be a significant factor in the School to provide IT based quality
education to the students. To start with, the School will have a computer lab with a highend
server and 25 PCs connected to the LAN. All classrooms are wired and will have internet
connection through a state-of-the-art high-tech networking. The Federal Bank Ltd has opened an
extension counter at the School for the collection of fees and disbursement of salary. Loyola
Children's Cafe (LCC) will provide a variety of snacks, soft drinks and games for the staff and
students.
XLRI
- George C L
February started with a sad celebration, the 'month's mind' for Fr John Prabhu who had been a
member of our Community for the last 14 years. The Mass was offered by the Provincial,
assisted by our Superior, Fr Augustine. It was well attended by staff members of the Institute,
some Sisters, a few friends of Fr Prabhu and a large gathering of the Jesuits and diocesan clergy
of Jamshedpur. The clergy stayed on for dinner after the Mass was over.
Fr Mathew Areeparampil is our guest once more, on his return from Nimhans, Bangalore after
diagnosis and some treatment. We cannot help admiring the courage and quiet acceptance of
God's will which characterise him in putting up with the considerable suffering he has to endure.
This time, he finds it physically impossible to go through the physiotherapy sessions at TMH.
Instead he does exercises in his room and is given acupressure by a specialist from the town. We
pray that all this will improve his condition.
Fr PD, Director of the Institute, has been commissioned by the Planning Commission to prepare
a development plan for the Jharkhand State. On his side, Fr Augustine has been appointed by
the Jharkhand government member of a Youth Development Committee. This requires him to
make frequent visits to Ranchi and Patna. He also attended an important international conference
on 'Sustainable Development' held in Delhi. Fr Joe Saldanha spent time in Calcutta advising an
orphanage run by the Christian Brothers in that city. The other members of the Community
continued their usual work of teaching, writing and conducting ministry.
As far as the students are concerned, their most important activity of the two years, Placement,
was concluded in three days with great success, everyone of them finding a suitable job.
Unfortunately, several companies and other organisations which were scheduled to visit our
campus for recruitment had to be disappointed. These senior students have left the Institute and
so a strange quiet pervades the campus. On 10 March, however, they will be back for the
Convocation.
XTTI
We, the Juniors, attended the workshop conducted by Frs Raymond and Pulickal at Atma
Darshan for the writers, agents and well-wishers of "Sandesh" on the occasion of its Golden
Jubilee. We discovered that through writing we can fight injustice. Mr Rajendra Kamal, a senior
story writer, said that in today's context, Christians have to develop their writing skills. The
programme was very inspiring. We also had a course on Hinduism conducted by Fr Joe
Vellaringatt at XTTI.
On 4 February, the Juniors, tertians and the Sisters of IBMV went to Mokama on pilgrimage. We
kept on singing hymns with great devotion. Mother Mary's statue was carried during the
procession. Soon after the procession, Mass began. The Archbishop Benedict Osta of Patna was
the main celebrant. Around 5000 people participated in it.
On 9 February, XTTI Community gave farewell to the Tertians. A Novice, a Junior and a Tertian
