ORDINATION OF FR ANTONY A PANCRAS
20 November 2004 was a day to be inscribed in golden letters in the annals of St.
Xavier's Palayamkottai. In an awe-inspiring ceremony that marked the Jesuit tradition
and splendor, Antony Pancras along with nine others (8 for Madurai & 1 for Dumka)
was ordained a priest by Rt Rev Jude Paul Raj, the Bishop of Palayamkottai, amidst the
multitudes of prayers and the smoke of incense that rose up to heaven.
The pompous celebration began with a procession which displayed a pure blend of South
Indian culture and tradition. The ordinandi flanked by hundreds of men in white shuffled
through the aisle rhythmically with the folk dancers.
The Province was represented by Fr Provincial himself along with Frs Panneer and
Shantinandan Mundu and Schs Gulshan, Vinod, also Joshy and Jose. The depression
formed in the Bay of Bengal and the cloudy sky caused panic since the function was to be
held out in the open. But once again it was proved that prayer could work wonders. The
ceremony was witnessed by over 2000 people from various walks of life and faith.
On the following day, 21 November, Fr Pancras offered his first Mass in Sattur - his
hometown about 75 kms from Palayamkottai. Hundreds of enthusiastic parishioners took
part in it with great vigor and joy. Our presence was gladly received by the family and the
parishioners and in their turn they felicitated us with ponnadai (golden shawl).
We are grateful to the Provincial of Madurai and the Rector and Community of
Palayamkottai for their wonderful hospitality and service extended to us.
- Jose & Joshy
From 15-19 November, the Curia welcomed the 10 members of the Brothers Commission
(one per Assistancy) entrusted with carrying out what Decree 7 of General Congregation
34 prescribed regarding the Brothers.
Europe - The number of Novices admitted in the 29 Novitiates of the European
Provinces and Regions shows a slight decrease as compared with last year: from 84 to 70.
Poland is on top of the list (13 new Novices in North Poland and 7 in South Poland).
Seven Provinces did not receive any Novices in 2004
Thailand – The Thailand Region will celebrate on 11 December the 50 years since the
second coming of the Society to Thailand. Fr General will join the 26 Jesuits who work in
the country to commemorate the date. Previous to the celebration, the Superiors and
Directors of Apostolic Works will hold a meeting in a parish recently entrusted to the
Society by the Bishop of Chon Buri.
Ivory Coast – The Francis Xavier Residence and the Institute of Theology are the only
two Jesuit Communities in the city of Abidjan, separated by about two kilometers. The
Residence (with 13 members) is in the city and the Institute of Theology (15 Scholastics
and 7 professors) in the periphery. The tension of the city is felt in our Houses but until
now the few French Jesuits who are part of the Communities have not been subjected to
the intimidation reported by other Europeans.
DNC, Pune
News from Houses
Philosophers' Superior Fr Joe Njara underwent an operation of the lumber region of his
back on 3 November at the Ruby Hall Clinic. Operation was very successful. Now he is
recuperating in the infirmary of DNC. The doctor has advised him six weeks of rest and
promised that his right leg would be alright.
On 5 November Fr Jayanth took his final vows at a solemn Mass in the evening. Soon
after, a colourful cultural programme was presented by the Scholastics.
On 13 November, DNC organised its mega event the Bal Mela. 1500 children came from
our different ministry places. They enjoyed participating in all the activities.
On 17 November Madurai Province had their cultural presentation. It was indeed
colourful.
The JDV faculty of Philosophy had organised a seminar for staff and students. The theme
was "FEMINISM". Sr Ananda, rcsj was the resource person. Her talk inspired and
enlightened our attitude towards women.
DNS, Digwadih
- Benjamin Lakra
Classes have resumed after the Pujas. The Campus families, along with the Jesuit
Community had an 'All Faith Prayer Service' on Diwali evening ending with modest
fireworks.
Rector Wooslie gave an Ignatian Retreat to the AC's at Dhanbad Convent. Headmaster
Vijay made his own annual Spiritual exercises amidst festival "Dhoom Dhams' at De
Nobili Bhavan.
This years Christ The King Festival was hosted by our Parish. Pastor Stan Kujur left no
stone unturned to make it a memorable event. The Procession began at ten in the morning
from the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, Digwadih. The Faithful numbering nearly a
thousand, along with the clergy and religious, marched with loud prayers and songs on
their lips to Carmel FRI where the celebration concluded with the Eucharist and agape. A
noteworthy feature of this yearly procession was that all the regular loudspeakers from
local temples and mosques were switched off, so as not to disturb the edifying
Procession. This is a sure sign of our meaningful presence in the area for over half a
century!
Our DOSTI Club members collected sacks of rice, dal, onions, and potatoes and
distributed them among the leprosy Patients of Bowrah Colony during the festival of
Lights. The grateful inmates fondly recalled their old association with Frs Larry Hunt
and Joe Lacey. The De Nobili Alumni conducted a three day Leadership Orientation
Camp to the DOSTI members of the City Schools under the watchful eye of Rector
Woolsie.
Fr Panneer went home for the anniversary Mass of his dear mother and Br Amal to
Mumbai for the Brothers renewal course.
The "Kicking Off" of the Golden Jubilee Year is scheduled on 19 December with the
Parents Nite. Our teachers are working hard to make it a success. Here is an open
invitation to all, especially those who have 'toiled' here, to join us in thanking God for His
blessings!
Goa
- Pius Fernandes
From the last week of September to the first week of October, Fr Paul Cutinho kept the
tertians fully on toes with the dynamics of the Exercises. Fr Pratap Naik spent a day
introducing the history of Jesuits in Goa which was followed by a daylong (on 5th) trip to
different Jesuit historical centers. With the returning of both Instructors from Rome we
got into the study of the Letters of St Ignatius. Later the tertian community became very
active and full of life with the reading and understanding the Constitutions of the SJ and
the preparation for the retreats each tertian has to preach. As for the retreats: Tony went
to Bangalore for a group of Sisters, Gyan to Baroda for Jesuit pre-novices and Victor to
the Sisters at Carmel college in Goa itself. Fr Michael (Instructor) had done the
networking so widely and meticulously that the tertians were sent to direct retreats even
in Rajasthan, Gujarat, Maharashtra and Karnataka.
On 21 November the tertian community joined the concelebration of the inaugural Mass
of the exposition of the sacred relic of St. Francis Xavier. Each one had the special
privilege of being next to the holy relic and touching and experiencing the nearness of
holiness of the Saint. The next 10 days are kept aside for the study of SJ history in India.
4th December is scheduled for the departure of tertians on the Ignatian experiment for a
month. Tony would be with the refugee service in Tamil Nadu; Gyan would be at the
home for the mentally challenged in Bangalore and Victor at the AIDS patients‟ home in
Bangalore. The choices are made responding to the movement of the Spirit and with the
guidance of the instructors. The date of return is 3 January ‟05.
Merry and joyful Christmas to all in and of the Province.
HLC
- Victor Joseph
HLC gets a new face-lift as it is painted under the supervision of Fr James. James is
currently making his pre-final vows retreat. Br Jerome is making a number of
improvements, physical and educational, in our seven basti schools. A new evening
computer course has been started and the response has been good. Ed addressed the
National Jesuit Alumni Milan, gave a course in Ranchi to the fourth year Seminarians at
St Albert‟s and another one-day programme for NTPC Managers at XIM. S Tony gave a
day of recollection here for the Orissa Regents.
- Edward H McGrath
LCCC, Bhubaneswar
A professional and critical evaluation of the Centre was done by Fr. George Ponodath,
S.J., Director, EMRC Kolkata. His report was studied in a meeting of the Jamshedpur
Communications Commission in October. Suggestions for improvement are being
implemented. George is accompanying a team of Christian photographers from five
countries on a Christian photographic tour of Meghalaya and Nagaland. Photographic
work of this group has appeared and will appear in several Christian publications and
promotional events.
Loyola Hospital – Sr Smitha, S.SpS, has joined the Community as Superior. Sr Amrita,
S.SpS, has joined as pharmacist. Two additional doctors have joined the staff of the
Hospital. The second phase of construction has been contracted for. Additional
equipment has been funded by several agencies and some doctors.
The blessing and inauguration of the Sisters‟ Convent by Archbishop Most Rev Raphael
Cheenath, SVD was held in October.
LCE
- George A Hess
The first block of practice teaching of the present B Ed batch is going on in 18 schools of
Jamshedpur. All the faculty members together with Victor and Gilbert visit these
schools for supervision of the teaching sessions of the student-teachers. The Schs Arul,
Jaison and Birendra seem to enjoy their teaching experiences. The Diwali celebration
organized by the students with various dances and other cultural items proved to be a
delightful event. The new basketball court in the College campus is now fully ready for
use. We like to believe that it will be well used once the students return from their
practice teaching sessions.
Victor is happy to have the Tata Sumo vehicle back having almost the original look after
the repair it had to go through due to the accident. Victor is putting in his best efforts to
activate the Alumni Association of the College. He saw that the College was well
represented in the National Jesuit Alumni Congress in Jamshedpur at the end of October.
Loyola School, Bhubaneswar
- Gilbert D’Souza
We closed out October on a happy note! Loyola, Bhubaneswar, was granted Affiliation to
the Council for the ICSE, New Delhi. The fact that Mr F Fanthome, the Chief Executive
and Secretary for the Council, himself visited and inspected Loyola, made an inspection
by another Head of an ICSE school redundant! The first batch of 42 will now appear in
the year 2007.
Towards the fag end of October, Eric had to travel all the way to Hyderabad. He was
operated upon at The Asian Institute for Gastroenterology for “esophagal reflux”. The
operation - Endoscopic Balloon Dilatation – was performed to “stretch” the sphincter
muscle that pushes the food down into the stomach. The technique is almost similar to the
one used to remove a blockage in the arteries of the heart. He is back to “basics” learning
how to chew his food well and thoroughly before swallowing it down.
November brought us more comforting news in the visit of Provincial James. In a
meeting with John Guidera, Br. Vally and Br Oscar Rodericks he took time to “review
the situation” before giving us the “go ahead” to hike fees and salaries. In less than 4
years the School has grown in numbers but the pay check for the teachers and workers is
the slimmest ever! A letter to the parents has already gone out to this effect. A tidal wave
of protests is inevitable!
Diwali was made more sparkling for us this year when Loyola Educational Society was
granted Form U/s 80-G. Hopefully, it will make it easier for LES to raise funds at the
local and corporate level.
Vally took time off during a lull in school life to make his retreat in Loyola Bhavan under
the direction of Fr S Tony. Hardly had he unpacked his bag, Eric took off to Hyderabad
to attend the Heads of ICSE Schools Meet. The best way to see India – “ek dam”, free, or
almost - become the Head of one of our ICSE schools!
Loyola School, Jamshedpur
- Eric B Cassel
School & Community- Our Campus was all decked up to host JAAI Milan (29-31
October), the national meet of Jesuit Alumni. It was a time of renewing old friendships,
making new ones and getting the feel of belonging to the huge and diverse Jesuit Family.
Our campus became the melting pot for the 500 odd participants. Kudos to Fr
Augustine Vattamattam and his team for the successful organization of the mega event.
School reopened on 1 November and with that began the lively practices for the Sports
Day. It's a pleasant sight to see the entire School, in different groups, practicing drills,
exercises, march-past etc. Practice makes a man perfect, seems to be the motto of the
dedicated teachers who are working towards the Magis. Best of luck to them.
Like previous years, this year too there has been a rush for the KG and Plus Two forms.
1100 forms have been bought by anxious parents for the 225 seats available in KG. For
the 250 seats in Plus Two, 692 forms have been bought. The competition seems to get
tougher every year.
A team of doctors from Tata Main Hospital was there on 8 November to conduct a cancer
awareness programme for our students. Our students benefited much from the
informative sessions.
The Junior School had their Annual Exhibition on 18 November. The Fasy Auditorium
was a sight worth seeing with the beautiful charts and models on different school
subjects ranging from History to Computer Science.
LCC celebrated Children's Day on 6 November. The teachers and the students put up an
excellent cultural programme. The parents were also invited to witness the talents of their
kids. The Main School organized their annual Bal Mela on 11 November. It was a day of
fun and frolic for our students.
This month many of our Community members were on the move. Saby went to Mt St
Joseph, Bangalore on 2 November for the Renewal Programme. The programme was
packed but he enjoyed the companionship of his old friends. Vatta left for Hyderabad on
22 November to attend the Principals' Meeting. In the absence of both Vatta and Saby,
Br K T Jose kept the ship afloat. Bro Maxi, Sch Somy and Fr Bernard are out
spending eight fruitful days with the Lord. Fr Felix as usual has quietly slipped into the
Minister's shoes and is seen silently serving the Community as acting Minister. Fr Jerry
went to Dhanbad to give a retreat to the Catholic students of Carmel Digwadih. Fr E
Parappuram keeps up his spiritual ministry in Kutkudungri. "Praying is the most
relaxing exercise", he says.
Sonari Parish - The major event of the month was the First Holy Communion. On 7
November, 31 children received Our Lord in a solemn Eucharistic celebration. Fr Oscar
was the main celebrant while Deacon Pancras gave an inspiring homily. The next day
our PP took a busload of parishioners to the shrine at Khuntpani for the annual
pilgrimage. After returning from the pilgrimage Pancras left for home for his ordination
which was on 20 November. A hearty congratulations to him.
Candidates House- The Candidates went to Khuntpani for a pilgrimage and then
proceeded to Lupungutu on 23 October for a Triduum. They have all returned with rich
experiences.
Sch Somy arranged an educational trip for the Candidates to TELCO and TISCO. Some
of the Community members also joined the Candidates to see what goes on inside the
huge factories.
JYOTI- JYOTI organized the 21st JYOTI Inter-school Basketball Tournament (16-21
November). This is a friendly celebration among the JYOTI Schools where students
come to laugh, to cheer, to compete, to challenge, to lead, to learn, to serve and to enjoy
each other's company. This year 12 Schools participated and the number of teams went
up to 25. Mr Harbhajan Singh, (Secretary, Jharkhand Basketball Association) inaugurated
the tournament while Mr Satish Pillai (Chief, Tata Sports and TFA) was the Chief Guest
for the Finals. Loyola Hindi were the winners in the High School Boys Category and
runners-up in the Girls Category. Loyola English boys were runners-up in the Plus Two
Category. Congrats to Sch Victor for the successful organization of the event.
- Victor Prasad
Lupungutu
TRTC organized a three-days 'Yuwa Jumur Varshik Mahotsav' for the youth of Kolhan
area from 13-16 November. 700 registered members participated in it. Fr. Xavier Joseph
from ISI, Delhi and Fr Stan Lourduswami and the team from Ranchi gave their input on
Self-respect, Self-Governance and Self-Employment. These topics were very relevant to
the youth. The 'Mahotsav' was a big success under the direction of Fr Mike T Raj and
the cooperation of Frs Clement, Sunil, Deacon Blacius and Sch Alfred. In one way or
the other all the members of SJ and the SCN Communities of Lupungutu were involved
in the programme.
From 21-26 November there was a training programme for the Setu Vidyalaya teachers
in the Middle School. Frs Mike T Raj and Clement trained the teachers in various
teaching skills. There was another training programme for the Setu Vidyalaya teachers of
Rajnagar area conducted by Fr Clement. Finally, the first lot of NIOS books arrived and
were distributed to the NIOS students, but a bigger lot is yet to be received.
Fr Michael Tirkey is referred to Tata Hospital, Mumbai and Deacon Ranjit has
accompanied him there. Meanwhile, Blacius has walked into the shoes of Fr Mike
Tirkey and visited Goilkera for the watershed project.
The Combined Annual Sports Day of St. Xavier's Middle School and the High School
was held on 20 November in the traditional way. Congrats to Frs Saleth, Joe, Raphael,
Br Pascal, Sr Basanti and the whole band of committed staff and students for making
the sports day a memorable one. The tenthers started the send-up test on 24 November.
Leaving the responsibilities of building work and the parish into the hands of Bro Bene,
Romanus went off to Basahatu for his annual retreat. Fr Joe Anthony went to XLRI for
the retreat before the final vows. Fr Saleth went to Patna for a three-days seminar.
RTC, Patna
- Alfred & Manoj
The month of Karthik (October) is very special to the people of Bihar. This time it was
also a special month for our second year theologians, Schs Amrit, Gerry and Praful
who were on a weeklong exposure to Hinduism in Banares, the holy city of temples.
They are now back at the RTC spiritually purified with the water of the Ganges. Later, on
the 18th we celebrated Chhatt, which was combined with the recollection.
Sch Rakesh is keeping himself busy and makes his presence felt not only at the RTC but
also among the youth of the Parish. At the end of October, he was instrumental in
conducting a successful seminar for the youth on "Participation in Community, Society
and Family" in which around 35 young boys and girls took active part. On 7 November,
anticipating the Children's Day, he also conducted a camp for 10-15 age group children
of the Parish. All young and old of the Parish seem to be taken up by the initiative and
commitment of Rakesh. Congrats Rakesh.
Congratulations to Sch C G Thomas who passed his B Ed exams with distinction. Now
he feels that he is ready for fulltime commitment to Theology. His B Ed companion, Sch
Roshan Kiro, has also passed his exams with a first class.
Schs Martin and Praful, two of the organizing committee members, are fully busy
making arrangements for this year‟s annual seminar on Human Rights and its Violations
against Dalits, Adivasis and most Backward Classes of Jharkhand and Bihar. We are
grateful to Fr Stan Lourdusamy for providing us with some apt materials on the topic.
Tepasai
- Gerald Ravi D’Souza
November began with a bang. Our Middle School won the winners shield in the Boys and
Girls sections of the Munna-Munni Tournament. Congrats to Tony Bara, Mr Dinesh
Korah and Mr Sidiu Surin who coached selflessly the children for more than a month to
win the coveted prize. The hostellers celebrated Diwali with crackers and „bara khana‟.
George slipped to XL for his annual retreat. Anil took the Krus Vir children and the
parishioners to Khuntpani for the Feast and made sure that our kitchen garden is well
stocked with vegetables.
Our OLP Sisters had their Feast Day spread out for three days and the hostellers derived
the maximum benefit.
Sunil, after months of helping out in the School, is busy ministering for soul and body of
the Community and the Parish. He is busy with construction of a fitting place for the
statue of John De Britto, our Patron.
The School is getting ready for the Sports Day on 28 November where Mr Sukhram
Oraon and the Goilkera BDO will grace the occasion.
With the Advent, we have begun our Carol singing and in the month of December, we
will have two Seminarians to help out as part of their Christmas ministry.
St Xavier’s, Purulia
- George Anthony
Five boys and two girls from our School participated in the 8 th National Sports Meet of
Schools from 6-8 November at the JRD Tata Sports Complex in Jamshedpur. Though it
was for the first time they competed at the Nationals, yet it was an excellent exposure for
them. Their performance was far superior to those athletes who came from Kolkata.
Abhisek Dutta stood fourth in the Discuss Throw, fifth in Shot Putt and Samsuzzman,
fifth in High Jump. Paritosh Mahato of our School was the Captain of the West Bengal
contingent, while Mr S K Abutaleb, our PTI, was the team coach and Fr Hilary Lobo,
the team Manager.
Amit Mahato of Class IX-A who left his house in September has not returned home.
Your prayers are solicited.
Fr Emmanuel Horo was admitted to Mercy Hospital last week for five days for a
suspected Malaria. He is now back in Purulia.
The presence of a „mad monkey‟ in the School building which bit many policemen at the
police lines caused a lot of fear and disturbance among the students in the School. The
large contingent of police force and forest men summoned in the School premises could
not catch the monkey which apparently had a method in his madness.
Preparations for our third annual Sports Day, which will be held on 11 December, at 8.30
am, are in full swing. You are cordially invited.
Our students of Stds IX and X were invited at the inauguration of LAC at the District
Science Centre, Purulia.
In compliance with the Government and the Council directives, a second exit route is
under construction.
Br Steven made his retreat last week while Hilary Lobo made his in October.
The Purulia deanery meeting was held by Frs Chonas, Charlie and Emmanuel Horo in the
Catholic Ashram on 19 November.
The School held its successful second Art and Science Exhibition which was inaugurated
by Mr T K Sengupta, District Science Officer, Purulia. The response of the parents was
overwhelming.
XIMB
- Hilary Lobo
Xpressions is an annual Business Schools meet, which has both academic and cultural
programmes. This year the whole programme was divided into two parts. The first part
consisted of panel discussions, computer based marketing and strategic management
games, paper presentations and case study competitions. One of the unique features was
the Ulysses, an online computer game developed by our students. Several teams from
India and abroad participated in this online game. The second part of Expressions
consists of cultural programme. The unique feature of part two was the performance by
Padma Vibhusan Jagjit Singh. The entire programme for Xpressions was conceived,
planned, financed and executed by the students. Xpressions is one of the biggest B-
Schools meets in the country.
12 October was shocking and sad day for XIMB. A group of ten second year students
went to Puri temple after their term examinations and then went for a swim. One of the
boys was carried away by the tidal wave. We got his body only on the third day. Though
he was the only son, the parents accepted this tragedy in the right spirit and appreciated
the work done by the Institute and the students in getting the body and making all
necessary arrangements for the cremation in Puri itself. They were highly touched by the
prayer service organized by the Institute in the auditorium. The Board of Governors of
XIMB instituted a medal in his memory.
We had the second Foundation Day lecture on 30 October. Mr Arun Maira, Chairman of
Boston Consulting Group, gave the lecture. Large number of people attended this lecture,
which was followed by dinner in the Management Development Centre of XIMB.
XIMB PGPRM placement brochure has been adjudged one of the top three best
brochures by the Business School Affaire, Mumbai.
Abe attended the National HRD Convention in Bangalore and George visited Dhanbad
and Chaibasa Communities as Revisor. George Joseph is working with his Ph D guide in
Chennai to finalise his questionnaire for data collection and Tony is busy collecting data
from the Orissa based companies.
Frs Sunil Lakra, Kuruvilla, Victor Misquith and James Tharaniyil made their annual
retreat here. They all said that XIMB with its beautiful green campus and winding roads
is an ideal place for prayer, reflection and relaxation.
XLRI
- George Cheradayil
Homecoming 2004 was the title of the two–day get together of about 100 odd alumni of
the Institute from different parts of the country on 20–21 November. Most of them were
nostalgic about their re–visit to their alma mater and renewed their bond with the
Institute. The highlight of the occasion was the panel discussion on „Ethics in Business is
an Oxymoron‟ by eminent personalities – Azim Premji, CMD of WIPRO Corporation,
Suhel Seth, Founder and CEO of Equus Redcell and Tapan Mitra, former Chairman of
CII [eastern region] and Haldia Petrochemicals. We were also fortunate to have Azim
Premji take a brief tour of the campus and inaugurate the E–business Centre.
Our students have been hitting headlines these days with the many awards and prizes they
have won in different B–School competitions. They are a bunch of proud and happy
XLers!
Diwali was celebrated with the traditional pomp and gaiety in the campus. Competitions
in Rangoli, Diwali Ghar and sports and games for children, etc, made the festival of lights
memorable for one and all.
Fr James J Spillane, SJ, an American Jesuit of Indonesian Jesuit Province and Professor
of International Business and Ethics at Sanata Dharma University, Yogyakarta,
Indonesia, delivered the 14th JRD Tata Oration on Business Ethics titled Tourism in
Developing Countries: Neocolonialism or Nation Builder on November 29, 2004, the
